"After much thought, consideration and a lifetime of preparation, I have decided to f orgo my senior season of football and enter the NFL draft, further pursuing my dreams," he wrote. A 6-foot-5, 258-pound edge rusher out of Southern California, Thibodeaux p roclaimed at the start of the season that his goal was to win the Heisman, a tall order for a defense player. Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux says it's at that point of the season where every team wants to knock off the Ducks. Anthony Brown Jr. threw for 135 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 123 yards and another score as No. 5 Oregon beat Washingto n State 38-24 on Saturday night. Oregon, ranked No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings, has won five straight and extended its winning streak at Autzen Stadium to 18 straight games, including 14 straight victories at home over Pac-12 opponents. " Every game is a playoff game," Thibodeaux said. "Us having this target on our backs, it makes every team want to play their best. You know, one thing that we had a problem with was playing down to teams. And now I feel like we're in that mode where teams have to play up to us." Oregon (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12) needed to win and for Stanford to beat Oregon State up the road in Corvallis earlier on Saturday to clinch the Pac-12 North. The Beavers didn't hold up their end, winning 35-14 over Stanford.Washin gton State (5-5, 4-3) tied the game at 14 before halftime but Oregon pulled away in the third quarter. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak over Pac-12 opponents for the Cougars, who fell to BYU on Oct. 23 in a midseason nonconference game. The Co ugars still need one more win to become bowl eligible and perhaps redeem a season that has been marked by turbulence. Washington State dismissed head coach Nick Rolovich on Oct. 18 after his refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19. "Our guys aren't go ing to quit. They're gonna keep fighting," WSU interim coach Jake Dickert said. "They're gonna keep battling. I think the biggest thing we were looking for in this game is just improvement and keep progressing in our program, keep moving forward." - Oreg on/AP College Football

Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux injured his left ankle in Saturday's game against Fresno State and did not play in the second half. Thibodeaux, mentioned as a possible Heisman Trophy candidate this season, was injured in the first half of No. 11 O regon's season opener. He returned after having the ankle taped. The 6-foot-5, 258-pound, third-year sophomore emerged from halftime wearing street clothes and a walking boot on his left leg. Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said after the game that it appea red to be a sprain and that X-Rays were negative. "We're very optimistic that it's nothing too serious," Cristobal said.Oregon survived a challenge from the Bulldogs but emerged with a 31-24 win. Before he was hurt, Thibodeaux had two solo tackles and a sack. "That's one of the best players in the country right there, probably the best player in the country right there," center Alex Forsyth said. "So it's always a tough to see a guy who's a true leader, a high-level competitor, and just such an u nbelievable player with an unbelievable motor, to see him go down. It's terrible because he makes such a huge difference on our defense." So much has happened off the field in the last seven months - the dawn of the name, image and likeness policy for players, proposed College Football Playoff expansion, looming realignment - but not much has changed in the perceived pecking order on the W est Coast. Oregon is picked to win the Pac-12 championship in the 2021 media poll released Tuesday. The Ducks received 27 of the 40 first-place votes to earn the preseason nod, ahead of both USC (10) and Utah (3)."I never and we will never see our selves as a program with a bullseye on us, a target on us. It's never been that way, never will be that way," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said of the lofty expectations during his press conference Tuesday at the Pac-12 media event in Los Angeles. "When we wake up in the morning, our feet hit the ground, we wake up with a hunger, drive, determination to make sure we're always a hunter in a humble way, driven way. "All the other stuff, the fluff and the predictions, it doesn't factor into our regimen, ou r structure, our DNA, our mentality." Seven Oregon players were named to the preseason all-conference first and second teams - defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux (first), cornerback Mykael Wright (first), center Alex Forsyth (first), linebacker Noah Sewell (second), safety Verone McKinley (second), running back CJ Verdell (second) and wide receiver Johnny Johnson (second). - Register Guard

The summer spotlight continues to shine on Kayvon Thibodeaux as the Ducks' 2021 season draws closer. Oregon's star defensive end is one of the headliners on the Chuck Bednarik Award preseason watch list released Monday. The award is given annually to the nation's top defensive player. Thibodeaux, who is on the Sporting News' preseason all-American first team, recently partnered with Nike co-founder/CEO Phil Knight and vice president of design Tinker Hatfield on a lucrative non-fungible token and memorab ilia deal. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound former five-star recruit was the Pac-12 freshman defensive player of the year in 2019 and an Associated Press third-team All-American in 2020. As one of the top players in college football, it was only a matter of time before Kayvon Thibodeaux got in the name, image, and likeness (NIL) policy that's making waves across the sport. The star Oregon Ducks defensive end announced Tuesday evening he would be collaborating with Nike co-founder/CEO Phil Knight and shoe designer Tinker Hatfield to design non-fungible token (NFT) artwork. The first piece of artwork available is posted here. The listed rate is 0.045 Ethereum, which is a little over $100 in U.S. dollars. The partnership between Thibodeaux, Knight, and Hatfield makes perfect sense considering Nike is the focal point of athletics for Oregon. It's a great investment for Nike, based locally in Washington County. Thibodeaux, in addition to being the former Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-Pac-12 selection, is widely considered to be one of the top prospects for next year's NFL draft and one of the betting favorites for the Heisman. - The Oregonian

It's amusing to hear the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Thibodeaux compare himself to Hill, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound nickel safety. Should Thibodeaux notch any interceptions in the fall, it won't be all that unusual for an edge player. Winning the Heisman Trophy would be, as only one defensive player has even done so and while others have gotten some early hype over the years, few outside of Ndamukong Suh, Manti Te'o and Tyrann Mathieu held on for consideration as the season continued. "I think it's very possible for a defensive player," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "The thing about KT, he's a high achiever and he wants to be around guys that are into high achievement standards. He sees himself as limitless; we feel the same way. The sky is the limit for him. He played a year and really a half a season. His best football is still ahead of him."His body is continuing to grow larger, strong, more explosive, more flexible. His football IQ is continuing to increase. Coach DeRuyter has got a tremendous amou nt of experience, has coached some really high level edge players before. The combination of all those things with a guy that wants to win championships, it's exactly what you want for your football team. He's pushing himself, he's pushing others." Thibo deaux did drop into coverage at times last near, notably out of the dime package against UCLA, so it's not entirely a new concept for him. DeRuyter also made it clear that coverage isn't going to be Thibodeaux's primary assignment by any means, but more of an additional way to utilize his many skills. "Up front I really like our edges with Kayvon and Mase (Funa)," DeRuyter said. "I think they do a really nice job setting edges. They're guys that play in space. - The Oregonian

For Oregon to get there will mean getting Thibodeaux, Funa, Andrew Faoliu, Brandon Dorlus, Mase Funa and other members of the front seven freed up to rush the passer. Thibodeaux had 38 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and three pass breakups in seven games last season and won the Morris Trophy as the Pac-12?s best defensive lineman, as voted on by the players. DeRuyter is aiming to maximize Thibodeaux's evolving skills. DeRuyter said Thibodeaux has a skill set comparable to Von Miler, who he c oached while at Texas A&M, and schematically Oregon might look closest to that unit."The ability to bend, the pass rush value, really excited about him," DeRuyter said. "We used Von in a Joker position, what we called it back then. We will have th e flexibility to do that, depending on the package and personnel that we're in to have him there but we're going to move him around a bunch. "I've already sat down with KT and explained to him we're probably not going to have him playing 4i at all, but w e're going to move him around. On third down we moved Von from an A gap to a B gap to a C gap, we moved him all around to try to take advantage of matchups." - The Oregonian

Kayvon Thibodeaux was the best pass rusher in the Pac-12 by the end of last season and he enters this fall in the same place. Even in a short season, Thibodeaux should have every opportunity for ample production. The Pac-12 North lost a lot of very good offensive linemen, which sets up as a potential feeding frenzy for Thibodeaux. The depth behind him at defensive end is less certain. Mase Funa is the projected starter at Stud and Austin Faoliu at defensive tackle, though both could move to end as well. Bradyn Swinson spent the spring at defensive end and the freshman will clearly be in the mix for early playing time. The interior of the defensive line returns starters in Faoliu and Jordon Scott and though there are hits to the two-deep, Oregon actuall y is arguably in a better position in terms of talent. Along with Thibodeaux, Faoliu and Scott give the Ducks their top three tacklers back on the defensive line. But the tackles need to be more consistent pass rushers and have a short sample to show tha t before trying to make it to the NFL. - The Oregonian

On the edge of Oregon's defense it's Kayvon Thibodeaux's world and you don't want to get in his way. The former No. 1 recruit burst on the scene with 35 tackles, 14 for loss including nine sacks as a freshman and solidified his spot as Oregon's top pass rusher and one of the most disruptive defenders in the Pac-12. Considering the second half of the season is when Thibodeaux did most of his damage, the possibilities for his future production are seemingly limitless. The depth chart behind him is going t o shuffle though, as Gus Cumberlander is gone and DJ Johnson moved to offense.Mario Cristobal's take: "He's a different body type already. Last year he was in the 230s he's hitting 250s and plus over there. He takes a lot of pride in what he does. Not just playing the game and getting sacks, but technique, using his hands playing the run, knocking back tight ends, knocking back tackles, getting signals from the sideline and passing down calls, making adjustments. Your tells and your tips. The guy 's hungry to be an elite football player and he's going to do everything he can to get there. I think it starts with playing the big bodies now that he has become a big body as well." - The Oregonian
