No. 23 Texas A&M won't play in the Gator Bowl against Wake Forest on Dec. 31 because of COVID-19 issues and season-ending injuries, the team announced Wednesday. "It is unfortunate, but we just don't have enough scholarship players available to field a t eam," Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said in a news release. The Aggies (8-4) were scheduled to leave for Jacksonville on Sunday. The team did not provide any details on the COVID-19 issues or injuries on the team. "It is heartbreaking for our players, coa ches, staff and fans that we are not able to play in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl," athletic director Ross Bjork said. "Postseason football is the pinnacle of the season and when the opportunity is lost, it hurts on many levels." "As we have learned in the l ast 21 months of this health challenge, the well-being and safety of our student-athletes is paramount," he continued. "Our players poured their heart and soul into this season and we appreciate their dedication as Aggies. Aggie football is on track for long-term success and we know that the best is yet to come." The Aggies had an up-and-down season where they went 4-4 in Southeastern Conference play. They beat Alabama on Oct. 9 when the Crimson Tide was ranked No. 1 but wrapped up the season with a dis appointing 27-24 loss at LSU. - AP College Football

Texas A&M defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal is not motivated because he didn't win any postseason honors. His focus is on playing for a defense that turns heads. "Beyond the sky," is the ceiling Leal puts on the potential for A&M's defense in 2021. The uni t returns nine starters after allowing only 317.3 yards per game to rank ninth in the country. Leal was a big reason A&M improved 20 spots in the national rankings last season. He had 37 tackles to lead the team's linemen. He had seven tackles for loss a nd eight quarterback pressures, twice as many as anyone else on the team. The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder is a tough matchup because he can play tackle or end. "I feel very comfortable at playing both positions," Leal said Tuesday on a Zoom conference. "We hav e our packages, and certain packages require me to be in the inside. We've been working on every single thing honestly, so it's been good, and I've loved it, since I first started playing in and out."Teams started to pay extra attention to Leal la st season, a trend he's hopeful continues. "Of course, I would love it," he said. "Being that person that [opponents say], 'Oh, watch out for him. You gotta make sure you're on. You're working every single play'...because I promise you, I'm going to brin g it every single play." Leal had a career-high seven tackles in three different games last season, including the 41-27 victory over North Carolina in the Orange Bowl. "The guy's talented," A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher said late last season. "Inside, outs ide, pass-rush, play the run...he is a talented, talented young football player, and he's only getting better and better." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Texas A&M's first win at Davis Wade Stadium since 2012 started and ended with the defensive line Saturday. The Aggie defensive front recorded six sacks, forced a fumble and brought pressure that resulted in an interception in the 28-14 win. Defensive coo rdinator Mike Elko dialed up a three-man rush on most plays, leaving eight players to drop into coverage against Mississippi State's passing attack. With junior defensive tackle Bobby Brown out, Jayden Peevy anchored the middle of a three-man front, next to a rotating medley of ends. Defensive end DeMarvin Leal had the biggest impact on the Bulldog passing game, recording a sack, a tackle for loss and three quarterback hurries in the game. - Bryan/College Station Eagle
