Kevin Harris is finally healthy enough to play college football again after his breakthrough season as one of the Southeastern Conference's top rushers. Harris finished with 1,138 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns, leading the SEC with 113.8 yards a game l ast season. His touchdowns were second only in the league to Alabama's Najee Harris. The 5-foot-10, 220-pound Gamecock was eager to keep that going this year. However, back surgery to correct what he and South Carolina coach Shane Beamer called a "minor procedure" led Harris to miss all of spring camp and much of the summer. Harris will play for the Gamecocks (1-0) at East Carolina (0-1) on Saturday. The tailback "looked good out there" for Tuesday's practice, Beamer said. "He'll help. It's anothe r back in the room." Harris was much more than just another back in the room last season; he was the brightest spot in an offense that was 10th in the SEC in both total yards and points. He had five games with 100 yards or more last season, incuding a se ason high 243 against Mississippi and 210 against Kentucky. Harris became only the third South Carolina runner — Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers and Marcus Lattimore are the others — with multiple 200-yard rushing games. "I'm feeling pretty good, " said Harris, who usually keeps his comments brief. "I want to do better than I did last year." - AP College Football

The rise of South Carolina running back Kevin Harris continues. Before the season, it wasn't clear that the sophomore tailback would even start for the Gamecocks. Months later, Harris' name has surfaced on an early list of odds for the 2021 Heisman Troph y, college football's highest individual honor. While not a frontrunner for the award - Harris (+2000) ranks 16th according to odds from MyBookie Sportsbook - his inclusion is a testament to a breakout 2020 season. After emerging early in the season as S outh Carolina's bell cow, Harris became the ninth Gamecock to run for 1,000 yards in a season. His 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns came in just 10 games and are fifth-most yards and tied for second-most touchdowns in a single season in prgoram history. - T he State

Harris, a 5-foot-10, 225-pound running back out of Hinesville, Ga., might not be South Carolina's best NFL prospect, but he has been the team's most consistent all-around player. The sophomore has carried the football 164 times for 928 yards and 14 touch downs for the Gamecocks, who are 2-7. He's averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Harris rushed for an eye-popping 243 yards and five touchdowns on 25 carries against Ole Miss. He ran for 126 yards at LSU, 171 yards at Vanderbilt and 100 at Florida. He's also ca ught 20 passes for 142 yards and another score."With Harris," said UK Coach Mark Stoops this week, "he's one of the top two-three-four backs in this conference and you know that is saying a lot. He is hard to get down. He runs exceptionally hard. They do a really good job blocking. I really respect the way they put a hat on a hat and run very physical. They block physically and he runs tough as well." Harris is 72 yards shy of becoming the ninth player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards. A nd he will have done it in 10 games. "I think it's a goal that is on our kids' minds, and not just Kevin," South Carolina interim head coach Mike Bobo said. "It's something that the offense takes pride in, especially the offensive line and the running ba cks. They know how close he is and what he's meant to this football team, offensively in the run game and the pass game." - Herald Leader

Harris is 72 yards away from reaching 1,000 for the season, something only eight other running backs in program history have done. He knows how close he is and how likely it is he'll be given numerous chances on Saturday as the Gamecocks finish the regul ar season at Kentucky. "Him getting 1,000, I think it's important to our guys, especially our offensive line and tight ends. They know where he's at," interim head coach Mike Bobo said. "He's into it, he'd rather us be winning ballgames, but we all know he's close to getting 1,000 and to do that in a 10-game schedule against all-SEC opponents, I think that'd be something meaningful that these guys can hang their hats on moving forward."Harris would be the ninth Gamecock to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, something that has happened just 11 times (George Rogers, the school's greatest running back, thrice did it). But none of the others did it in only 10 games. Or against an all-SEC schedule. "That's one heck of a milestone, especially for a guy like Kevin, who's had a great year and is going to have a great game for us on Saturday," quarterback Luke Doty said. "We finish out, and get a win, and get him to 1,000 yards, that'd be awesome." - The Post and Courier

The South Carolina running back has been the Gamecocks' breakout star in 2020. A 5-foot-10, 225-pound sophomore, Harris leads the SEC in rushing with 928 yards. The Hinesville, Ga., product will be a massive challenge for a Kentucky run defense that has been so-so (eighth in the SEC, surrendering 152.2 yards a game) at best in 2020. - Herald Leader
