2021 BUTKUS AWARD WINNER: The 37th annual collegiate Butkus Award honoring the nation's best collegiate linebacker was presented today to University of Georgia inside linebacker Nakobe Dean. The award was presented by football legend Dick Butkus and his son Matt in a surprise announcement during a team meeting today. Dean received 34 percent of the weighted vote and 52 percent of first-place votes in becoming the second Bulldog to win the prestigious trophy, which honors top linebackers at three levels. Dean also won the 2018 high school Butkus Award. The 6-0, 225 lb. junior mechanical engineering major from Horn Lake, Miss., started all 12 regular season games in 2021 for the Bulldogs, which surrendered an average of just 6.9 points per game. His regular-season performance included 56 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and two interceptions, including one for touchdown. He has played in 37 games during his Georgia career.

The selection committee stated: "Nakobe Dean is a playmaker with a special combination of strength, coverage ability, playmaking flair and leadership skill. He consistently makes his presence felt on the field and in the community, elevates the defense with his command and is a complete linebacker who has made a tremendous impact on Georgia's program." Finishing second was Devin Lloyd of Utah with 30 percent of the weighted vote. Others receiving votes; Leo Chenal of Wisconsin (15%), Damone Clark of LSU (7%), Darrian Beavers of Cincinnati (7%), Chad Muma of Wyoming (7%), and DeMarvion Overshown of Texas with a write-in vote. - Butkus Award

Georgia has allowed just 83 points entering the Southeastern Conference championship game against Alabama. Since 2000, the only other team to give up under 100 points over its first 12 games was Southern California (93) in 2008. The Bulldogs are the first team since Texas in 1979 to hold its opponents to 17 points or less in each of its first 12 games of the season, according to ESPN. - AP College Football

Georgia, Alabama, Oregon and Ohio State held their places in the College Football Playoff ranking Tuesday, with Cincinnati still sitting at fifth. There was no movement in the selection committee's top seven after all those teams won last week. Michigan was still No. 6 and Michigan State seventh, heading into the Spartans' big game Saturday at Ohio State. Notre Dame moved up a spot to eighth. Oklahoma State (9-1) is now the highest-ranked Big 12 team at ninth after Oklahoma was handed its first loss last week. Wake Forest (9-1) is No. 10, the highest-ranked team from the Atlantic Coast Conference with three rankings left until selection Sunday. In the seven-year history of the College Football Playoff, no team has come from farther back than ninth to reach the final four with two rankings remaining before selection Sunday. Michigan State did that in 2015, propelled by a victory at Ohio State. - AP College Football

Raise a glass to Georgia's defense. Or three, actually - one for each second-quarter turnover that turned the rivalry known as "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" into another lopsided affair. The top-ranked Bulldogs and the nation's No. 1 defense dominated Florida, scoring three touchdowns off miscues in a 12-play sequence that carried them to a 34-7 victory Saturday, their fourth in five years in the neutral-site game. Georgia (8-0, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) later clinched the league's Eastern Division thanks to Kentucky's loss at Mississippi State. Coach Kirby Smart's team won its 12th straight since getting steamrolled in Jacksonville a year ago. The Bulldogs' injury-riddled defense allowed 571 yards in that one, the most in Smart's six seasons.

Georgia vowed to not let it happen again and responded with another demoralizing effort that might be their most impressive all season. "It was real personal," linebacker Nolan Smith said. Florida (4-4, 2-4) managed no points, 11 first downs and 214 yards through three quarters and looked like its decades-old, NCAA-record scoring streak might be in jeopardy down the stretch. But the Gators finally got on the scoreboard with 2:49 remaining, extending the streak to 418 games. They have scored in every outing since getting shut out by Auburn in 1988. Emory Jones' late touchdown run, though, did little to negate Georgia's mastery for three-plus hours on a cool, sundrenched afternoon. All the empty seats on Florida's side of TIAA Bank Field told the real story. This one was over by halftime. - Georgia/AP College Football

Georgia jumped three spots to No. 2 behind Alabama in The Associated Press Top 25 released Tuesday, giving the Southeastern Conference the top two teams in the country for the 30th time in the 85-year history of the college football poll. It is the second time in the last three seasons and the third in the last five that the SEC is sitting 1-2 in the AP Top 25, which is presented by Regions Bank. Alabama and LSU had a four-week run as Nos. 1 and 2 in the 2019 season before they played each other.

The Crimson Tide strengthened its hold on No. 1 after it throttled Miami in the first full week of the regular season. Alabama received 59 first-place votes, up from the 47 it had in the preseason poll. Georgia received four first-place votes after beating Clemson 10-3 in the opening weekend's biggest game. Ohio State moved up to No. 3 and Oklahoma dropped two spots to No. 4. Texas A&M is fifth, giving the SEC three teams in the top five. - AP College Football

Last season, Nakobe Dean's performance as Georgia's linebacker and defensive anchor rose to another level. The former coveted prospect out of Horn Lake, Mississippi recorded 71 tackles. Turns out, Dean did so with a hurt shoulder. He suffered an injury in the first or second week of the season, he said, and didn't miss any time until undergoing offseason surgery and sitting out spring practice in 2021. "It was something I knew I'd have to get looked at," Dean said. "I decided to play through it." A new preseason camp approaches and Dean has a clean bill of health along with the expectations to be one of the SEC's premier linebackers. - Macon Telegraph

Georgia landed a pair of players Monday on the Butkus Award semifinalist list for the nation's top linebacker. Senior Monty Rice and sophomore Nakobe Dean were two of 16 players announced to make the cut including eight from the SEC. Georgia is the only school that placed two on the list. Georgia's Roquan Smith won the award in 2017. Dean leads Georgia with 63 tackles to go along with 1.5 sacks and nine quarterback pressures. - Athens Daily Banner
