As the leader of the nation's top defense, Jordan Davis has produced enough highlights to receive some Heisman Trophy hype. Davis made another memory in his farewell to Sanford Stadium. The standout defensive tackle scored his first career touchdown and No. 1 Georgia was again dominant in a 56-7 rout of Charleston Southern on Saturday. Davis began the day among the seniors honored in a pregame ceremony. He ended it directing the Georgia Redcoat Marching Band. He was presented a red uniform jacket as an honorary member of the band. "If today was not my favorite memory, I don't know what to tell you," Davis said. Georgia (11-0) was in full control against Charleston Southern (4-6), the Football Championship Subdivision team from the Big South. The Buccan eers fell to 0-25 all-time against FBS teams. The Bulldogs allowed only 126 yards — 68 rushing on 31 carries and 58 passing. "Man, tough when you are playing the No. 1 team in the country," said Charleston Southern coach Autrey Denson. "There is no roo m for error, so we had to play a perfect game, our best game of the season. Unfortunately, we did not do that in all phases, but man did they compete their tails off." The Bulldogs installed a goal-line play for Davis in practice this week but there was no guarantee they would use it.As it turned out, Davis didn't have to wait very long as he scored on a 1-yard plunge out of the Bulldogs' jumbo package for the game's first touchdown. It's not often that quarterback Stetson Bennett has the opportu nity to hand the ball to a 6-foot-6, 340-pound running back. "That was my whole job on the play, make sure he gets the ball and gets the right handoff," Bennett said. "Make sure he gets in the end zone. It was pretty cool." Davis had previously played in the jumbo package as a blocker, but fans roared in anticipation when the massive lineman shifted to the backfield. Davis was stopped on his first run from the 2. Fans again cheered when he was given a second carry and scored from the 1. - Georgia/AP Col lege Football

The jolly No. 99 is returning to anchor Georgia's defensive line in 2021. Jordan Davis, Georgia's stalwart nose tackle, announced his plans to return to the program on Thursday afternoon. Davis has been a rising NFL Draft prospect as a player who can mak e a difference at the next-level with an agile 330-pound frame. Davis is arguably one of Georgia's biggest names to return for 2021 given his impact as a defensive leader and anchor. Georgia also saw a similar announcement from quarterback JT Daniels, th e offensive leader. Davis' stock might've been impacted by an elbow injury suffered on Oct. 31 vs. Kentucky. He missed four games and returned for the final regular-season game at Missouri. - Macon Telegraph

A Georgia defense that arguably is tops in college football faces the reality that it could be without two of its best players as it begins the stretch drive in its chase for championships this season Saturday against Florida. Nose guard Jordan Davis and safety Richard LeCounte are two of a slew of Bulldog defensive players that are sidelined or dealing with injuries. Defensive tackle Julian Rochester, a fifth-year senior with 21 career starts, is out for Saturday's game against Florida and his season m ay be in doubt. LeCounte was a preseason All-American and was joined by Davis as a first-team preseason All-SEC pick. Davis sustained an elbow injury in Saturday's 14-3 win at Kentucky while LeCounte remained in the hospital Monday after sustaining a con cussion in a dirt bike collision Saturday evening in Athens that put him in the ICU initially. - Athens Daily Banner

Georgia's short-yardage offense had a unique look on Saturday night. Twice in goal-to-go situations, the Bulldogs employed 6-foot-6, 330 pound junior defensive lineman Jordan Davis as a blocking tight end and 6-foot-3, 305-pound freshman defensive linema n Jalen Carter as extra blockers. Those two plays both resulted in one-yard touchdown runs for redshirt sophomore running back Zamir White. Smart said the idea came from offensive coordinator Todd Monken's days in the NFL, where due to roster restriction s on the road teams often use big defensive players in goal line situations. "We certainly think that Jordan is a weapon in terms of his athleticism and his size," Smart said. "Jalen played a lot of that stuff in high school. He's a really talented guy t hat's played some fullback and things. We've had it in for a while and thought we would use it when we needed to." - Macon Telegraph
