  12/04/21 - RB Jerome FordrJr/2022, Cincinnati, 5-11, 211 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Jerome Ford rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns and Desmond Ridder threw three touchdown passes as No. 3 Cincinnati broke open a close game in the third quarter and rolled past No. 16 Houston 35-20 in the American Athletic Conference championship game Saturday. The Bearcats who are ranked No. 4 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, are in position to become the first non-Power 5 team to qualify. The final rankings will be announced Sunday. Cincinnati (12-0) which extended the nation's second-longest home winning streak to 27, scored three touchdowns in fewer than eight minutes to finish off its second straight AAC crown. Cougars junior QB Clayton Tune passed for 250 yards with two touchdowns and an interception as Houston (11-2) lost for the first time since dropping its season-opener to Texas Tech on Sept. 4.

It was a wild first quarter on Saturday with the teams combining for 24 points and 316 yards. After the Cougars settled for a field goal on its opening possession, the Bearcats responded by going 82 yards in five plays capped by Ridder's 25-yard TD pass to Tyler Scott. Nathaniel Dell's diving 16-yard TD catch put the Cougars back in front, 10-7. But on the first play of Cincinnati's next possession, Ford broke free for a 79-yard TD run to give the Bearcats a four-point lead. Cincinnati led 14-13 at halftime despite Houston having possession for more than 22 minutes. But momentum shifted to the Bearcats early in the third quarter. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

Jerome Ford rushed for a career-high 189 yards and four touchdowns, helping No. 3 Cincinnati roll past UCF 56-21 on Saturday. Desmond Ridder passed for 140 yards and a touchdown as the Bearcats (6-0, 2-0 AAC) extended the nation's second-longest home winning streak to 24 games. It was first time in school history that Cincinnati scored 50 or more points in consecutive games. "The offensive line was the highlight of the day," Ford said. "It's the physical runs that took the heart from the defense. Tempo was the big thing this week. We wanted to take the pressure off Des." The all-time series was tied 3-3 coming in, with the Bearcats winning the previous two meetings by a combined six points. Saturday's game wasn't that close. It was just four seasons ago that UCF beat the Bearcats at Nippert Stadium by a similar score, 51-23. "This is a far cry from where we were five years ago," said Bearcats head coach Luke Fickell. "The guys that are still here turned the culture around." Cincinnati's special teams made the first big play when Josh Whyle partially blocked a punt to give the Bearcats the ball at the UCF 38. That led to a 1-yard TD run by Ford to put them ahead 7-0.

Ridder, who completed just six of his first 12 passes, hooked up with Alec Pierce in the back corner of the end zone for a 19-yard TD that put the Bearcats ahead 21-0 in the second quarter. "If you put a ball within a six or seven-foot radius, that kid is going to go up and get it," Ridder said of Pierce. The Bearcats didn't need to rely on Ridder and the passing game on Saturday, not with Ford gaining big chunks of yardage. Ford, who ran for a then-career high 149 yards in last week's win over Temple, sprinted 79 yards untouched for his third TD run to make it 28-0. "He makes my job a whole lot easier," Ridder said. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  09/11/21 - RB Jerome FordrJr/2022, Cincinnati, 5-11, 211 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Jerome Ford rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns, Desmond Ridder passed for 243 yards and two TDs, and No. 7 Cincinnati beat Murray State 42-7 on Saturday. The Bearcats were heavy favorites coming in, but the Racers outgained them 190-83 in the first half and led 7-0 in the second quarter. "The only way to grow up is to have some adversity," said Bearcats head coach Luke Fickell. "We kind of saw what we're made of. We found out a lot about each other in the second half." The score was tied at halftime before the Bearcats (2-0) scored touchdowns on four of their first five possessions in the second half.

Fickell was concerned about his team's focus this week with an invitation to join the Big 12 and trips to Indiana and No. 8 Notre Dame looming. "I don't want to put my head in the sand," Fickell said. "It is hard to deal with 18- and 22-year-olds and their ability to stay locked-in and focus when we're going to get everyone's best shot." Murray State's game plan to control the clock and keep the Bearcats' high-powered offense on the sidelines worked well in the first half. Murray State (1-1) held the ball for all but 1:30 of a scoreless first quarter, outgaining the Bearcats 128-7. "They came out and monotonously were moving the ball," Fickell said. "It frustrated us as much as anything. I give them an incredible amount of credit for their scheme." - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  04/19/21 - RB Jerome FordrJr/2022, Cincinnati, 5-11, 211 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Ford is entering his second season with the Bearcats after transferring from Alabama. The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Tampa, Florida, native had the most productive year of his college career in 2020, rushing for 483 yards and eight touchdowns. Ford is presumably in the driver's seat for the No. 1 running back spot, especially while Charles McClelland continues to work his way back from his second torn ACL in 14 months. "I feel like personally and as a group (running backs), we really want to be able to help the team -- not just the offense, special teams -- in any way possible," Ford said. "Whatever we can do, whether it be running the ball, blocking, running down on kickoff, catching the ball. We just want to be able to help the team." - Cincinnati Enquirer

Michael Warren II will not be easy to replace in the backfield, not just because of his talent but also coach Luke Fickell routinely said Warren provided energy and a personality that helped set the tone for the entire program. Senior Gerrid Doaks is a known commodity, but the addition of 5-foot-11, 212-pound Alabama transfer Jerome Ford, a former four-star recruit, upgrades the talent level at the position. "I think his ability in the weight room and some of those things, we've seen in this short amount of time," Fickell said. "I think we'll see more when we get the pads on. We knew him a lot out of high school, which is a great thing."

Ford, who is immediately eligible and can play three seasons at UC, rushed 31 times for 151 yards (4.9 yards per) and three touchdowns in eight career games for the Crimson Tide. "It's a great example to our guys, too," Fickell said. "He's a guy that's come in, he's going to have a lot of talent but he's still got to be who we are. That's going to be the biggest transition. The transition is not going to be carrying the football and what he can do. The transition is, can he figure out all those little things and expectations that we have? Not that he didn't have them (at Alabama), but every place is a little bit different." - Cincinnati Enquirer
