Georgia's defense trots out on its first possession by nightfall on Saturday and thousands of fans at a near 50-50 split cheer around them. Those in red and black will get their first look at No. 11, Derion Kendrick, in his new white jersey and the iconi c Bulldog silver pants. He will likely start as the team's top cornerback. His eyes will lock on Clemson's top receiver. Kendrick might look out of place for a moment, because well, the highly-regarded defender has always been known as a star on the othe r side.Kendrick transferred to Georgia over the offseason after an abrupt end to his 2020 season at Clemson. After being cleared of criminal charges in York County, South Carolina, it set the stage for Kendrick's debut against his former team. "We 've spoken to him about it and we continue to," Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Monday. "The hurdle is more of the emotional side in playing your former teammates and old family. It can be a knee-jerker and tough on you at times." Clemson molded Kend rick. It's where the 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback earned All-ACC honors. Now, he's one of Georgia's biggest assets. Kendrick has been discussed ad nauseum among Smart, Georgia coordinators and a slew of players for the month leading up to his debut again st the Tigers. Each review has been full of praise. "He came in ready to work and didn't complain about anything. He's been grateful for the opportunity, and that made me look at him as a guy with something to play for," middle linebacker Nakobe Dean sai d. "It might take a minute for a transfer to buy into the team culture, but he hopped in and was part of us right away." - The State

Former Clemson cornerback Derion Kendrick had one final message for the Tigers when he announced his transfer to Georgia in June. "To my brothers at Clemson, the coaches that supported me, and to my fans I appreciate you for not giving up on me," he wrot e in an Instagram post on June 1. "There are times in life when changes become necessary for one to grow, some people have to walk out of your life for others to walk in!!!" His transfer destination just happened to be with Clemson's season-opening oppon ent on Sept. 4 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Kendrick is expected to be competing for a starting spot for the Bulldogs right away.Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney addressed Kendrick's new college home first time Tuesday. It didn't su rprise Swinney at all that Kendrick was able to find a home with Georgia. "They're a great program, do a great job defensively," he said. "It's a good opportunity for him. I'm just happy that he has an opportunity to finish up, hopefully strong." The tra nsfer added another wrinkle in a contest that already had plenty of storylines. For one, it has College Football Playoff implications despite it being the first game of the year, and now it'll put Kendrick against his former squad. Instead of going again st Justyn Ross, E.J. Williams and Joseph Ngata in practice, he'll have to line up against them in real time. "Love DK and wish him all the best," Swinney said Tuesday. "In every game but the first one, I'll be pulling for him." - The State

Cornerback Derion Kendrick, who was dismissed from the Clemson football team in February, is transferring to the Bulldogs. Kendrick announced his plans on Instagram late Tuesday. "I'm focused, determined and ready to WIN!! #godawgs," he wrote. His experi ence with the Tigers should mean the first team All-ACC pick can be penciled in as a starter for Georgia which lost both of its starting cornerbacks. Kendrick comes with some off-field issues. He was arrested in his hometown of Rock Hill in March for unl awful carrying of a handgun, a misdemeanor, and cited also for simple possession of marijuana. The marijuana charge is heading to pre-trial intervention, according to records of the Rock Hill Municipal Court. The handgun charge is still pending, ac cording to York County prosecutor Misti Horton who declined further comment to the Athens Banner-Herald Tuesday afternoon through her office. Kendrick missed multiple games last season for "disciplinary reasons," according to the Greenville News. Georgia lost first-rounder Eric Stokes and second-rounder Tyson Campbell. The 6-foot, 190-pound Kendrick is in line to face his former team right out of the gates in the Sept. 4 opener in Charlotte against the Tigers. - Athens Daily Banner

Former Clemson defensive back Derion Kendrick has found a new place to finish his college football career. Both 247Sports and Sports Illustrated reported Tuesday that Kendrick is transferring to Georgia - confirming an AJC report last week that said the move was in the works. He'll enroll in Athens in the next 24 hours, according to the 247Sports report. He will have two more years of eligibility with the extra year because of COVID-19. Georgia and Clemson kick off the 2021 football season in a game tha t will be played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.Kendrick and former LSU tight end Arik Gilbert are both on their way to join Kirby Smart's Bulldogs, according to Tuesday reports. In February, Clemson announced that Kendrick wasn't on the roster, but the school never confirmed whether or not the senior's departure was discipline-related. Kendrick recently told the On Campus with JB & Sciggy podcast that he wasn't in school because of family obligations and "didn't have too much communicat ion" about it with the Clemson coach staff. He did miss time last season due to discipline issues, including sitting out the Nov. 28 win over Pitt. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney wished Kendrick the best for the future. - The State

Derion Kendrick was no longer on the roster, a Clemson official confirmed Sunday morning. The school would not say why and would not confirm whether or not the senior's departure was discipline-related. Dabo Swinney is expected to address Kendrick's situ ation after Monday's practice. Kendrick was named first-team All-ACC last season after appearing in nine games, with eight starts. He signed with Clemson for the class of 2018 as a five-star recruit from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill. Kendrick wa s projected by some to be a first round pick in this year's NFL draft, despite struggling in the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State as Justin Fields and the Buckeyes passed for 385 yards against the Tigers. However, he opted to return for his senior season, a decision that surprised many. Swinney said last season that Kendrick needed to do a better job from an accountability standpoint moving forward. - The State

Fields was brilliant against the Clemson secondary. He finished 22-of-28 passing for 385 yards and six touchdowns with one interception. He often picked on safety Joseph Charleston, who started the first half in place of starter Nolan Turner. Turner was forced to miss the first two quarters because of a targeting call from the Tigers' win over Notre Dame in the ACC Championship game. Cornerback Derion Kendrick was also a favorite target of Fields. Most glaringly, he was beaten by wide receiver Chris Ola ve late in the third quarter on a 56-yard touchdown. - Charleston Post Courier

Derion Kendrick is Clemson's top cornerback from a talent standpoint, but the junior hasn't been on the field much through the first two weeks of the season. Kendrick, who was a preseason All-ACC selection, did not play in Week 1 against Wake Forest for an undisclosed reason, and he didn't start on Saturday against The Citadel for discipline, Dabo Swinney confirmed after the game. Kendrick did resume his spot at cornerback on the second play of the game against The Citadel, but he was put back on the si deline late in the first half after getting a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the Tigers 49-0 victory.TV cameras captured Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables giving Kendrick an earful after the penalty, and Swinney said afte rward it was a mistake that shouldn't have been made. "Just can't happen," Swinney said. While Kendrick is Clemson's most talented cornerback, the Tigers are deep at the position. Cornerbacks coach Mike Reed has plenty of options, making it easy to call upon another guy if one player isn't doing what he is supposed to. On Saturday the Tigers started sophomores Andrew Booth and Sheridan Jones., with Kendrick coming off the bench. "He just didn't start the game," Swinney said of Kendrick. "Mike's got a lo t of competition in his room, too. - The State

With four of Clemson's top wideouts out for Saturday's scrimmage, receiver-turned-cornerback Derion Kendrick couldn't help but think about the possibility of playing both ways in 2020. "Being competitive, you try to do everything you can to help the team , so yeah, I've had some thoughts that I want to be on both sides, play both sides. God works everything out, not the player," Kendrick said. The Rock Hill native has not worked on the offensive side of the ball yet during fall camp, but he would be open to it.Kendrick signed with Clemson as a five-star receiver in the class of 2018. He caught 15 passes for 210 yards as a true freshman that year before moving over to the defensive side of the ball and earning second-team All-ACC accolades as a so phomore in 2019. Still, he feels like he has plenty left to prove, particularly after being listed as a co-starter on Clemson's initial depth chart. "It doesn't matter what position, starting or sitting on the bench, it doesn't matter. You always have so mething to prove," Kendrick said. "It's always something that you're going to do. I always have something to prove. I'm always trying to get better. I'm always trying to take that next step." Kendrick was named to the preseason Thorpe Award watch list af ter recording 51 tackles, three tackles for loss, six pass breakups and a pair of interceptions in 2019. - The State
