Master Teague III, Ohio State, Player News

As much as his clean bill of health has allowed him to jockey with freshmen TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams for carries in the upcoming season, it's also put him in a better position to find success on the field after rushing for 514 yards and eight touchdowns in seven games last fall. Known as a physical downhill runner over his first three seasons at Ohio State, Teague sees an opportunity to become a more balanced back as a fourth-year junior. He said that additional carries in practice have given opportunities to improve his vision, where he can spot openings in a defense, cut and change direction instead of just steamrolling down the field.

"Not being so one-dimensional to one side," Teague said. "There's some times where I've missed some cuts on the backside this past year, so I've got to make sure my eyes are in the right place and reading the d-line right. I've gotten really better on that with certain runs." The effort caught the attention of running backs coach Tony Alford in a recent film review with his players. He noticed a sequence from practice in which Teague set up a linebacker before cutting in another direction, spotting an opening on the field. "He wouldn't have seen that before," Alford said. "A lot of it goes back to that patience of understanding schematically where things are going and the timing of pushing a guy." If Teague's vision is enhanced, leading to some shiftiness, he should be a more productive runner and remain at the top of the pecking order at running back. "It's going to help his whole game immensely," Alford said. - Columbus Dispatch

Master Teague ran a career-high 169 yards and two touchdowns, Justin Fields accounted for three scores and No. 3 Ohio State held off a comeback bid by Michael Penix Jr., Ty Fryfogle and No. 9 Indiana to win 42-35 on Saturday. The Hoosiers (4-1) rallied from a four-touchdown deficit in the second half and made it a one-score game with 10:26 left, when Penix and Fryfogle connected on a 56-yard touchdown. Penix was 27 for 51 for a career-high 491 yards and five touchdown passes for Indiana. The Buckeyes (4-0) put up 607 yards and led 35-7 early in the second half, but struggled to contain Penix and Fryfogle, who caught seven passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns.

Fields was 18 for 30 for 300 yards and two touchdown passes, but he also threw his first three interceptions of the season and was sacked five times. Garrett Wilson had seven catches for 169 yards - his fourth straight game of 100-plus yards - and two scores for the Buckeyes. The running game helped Ohio State steady maintain control when things were getting dicey. Penix passed for four touchdowns in the second half but also made a critical error, tossing an interception that Ohio State's Shaun Wade returned for a touchdown at the end of the third quarter. Indiana had climbed its highest ranking in the AP Top 25 in more than a half-century, and the Hoosiers had pumped up their confidence by beating conference rivals Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State for the first time in program history. - Ohio State/AP College Football

Trey Sermon rushed for 947 yards in his best season at Oklahoma in 2018. He carried the ball 164 times for an average of 5.8 yards per carry as the leading ball carrier on a team that featured Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Kyler Murray (140 carries for 1,001 yards) and fellow tailback Kennedy Brooks (119 carries for 1,056 yards). Sermon was first up in that two-back system, paired with a quarterback who was always the most dangerous player on the field. And then last season, Sermon suffered some injuries and he saw his workload reduced, so he transferred to Ohio State.

Master Teague rushed for 789 yards last season as the clear backup to J.K. Dobbins for the Buckeyes. Teague played in enough blowouts to carry the ball 135 times for a 5.8 yard average, and he even was named third-team All-Big Ten. He was clearly No. 2 in a one-back system, but once Dobbins left for the NFL, Teague was the most experienced back on the team until Sermon came along. Teague tore his Achilles tendon in the spring. Sermon had offseason surgery for a knee injury suffered last season. The two of them should form a one-two running back punch for the Buckeyes when the season kicks off Oct. 24. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

In 2018, Ohio State linebacker Tuf Borland injured his Achilles' tendon during spring football practice. In 2019, linebacker Justin Hilliard did the same thing. Now it looks as if another OSU player has suffered a similar injury. Ohio State would not confirm that running back Master Teague III injured his Achilles during Monday's first spring practice, but sources indicated to The Dispatch that he had. The football program's policy is not to detail injuries, citing privacy concerns. OSU did announce that Teague would miss the rest of spring practice. If it is an Achilles injury, Teague will face a long rehab that could cause him to miss at least the start of the 2020 season.

"It's tough, but if you're going to tear an Achilles, this is the best place to do it," Hilliard said Wednesday. "I'm not going to speak on Master's injury. I honestly don't know anything about his injury specifically, but just speaking off my experience and Tuf's experience, we both made it back by week 2 of the season." Hilliard and Borland described rehab from an Achilles injury as arduous. "An Achilles is probably the hardest thing you could ever go through," Borland said. "If you can get through that, you can get through anything. We're all there for Master, whatever it is. We support him and we'll be there for him." - Columbus Dispatch

As Ohio State coach Ryan Day had a news conference Monday after the start of spring practice, he noted the lack of depth at running back. Only two scholarship tailbacks participated in the opening workout. "We're one injury away from a little bit of a crisis," Day said. That point arrived the next day. Master Teague III, the Buckeyes' leading returning rusher who is widely viewed as the heir apparent to J.K. Dobbins, was ruled unavailable for the rest of spring practice because of an undisclosed injury, a spokesman confirmed to The Dispatch. The absence leaves the Buckeyes with only one healthy scholarship running back in Steele Chambers, a redshirt freshman, for the remaining 14 spring practices, including the spring game. - Columbus Dispatch
