Roger McCreary established himself as the Tigers' top cornerback in 2020, but in the offseason the junior had to choose between staying at Auburn or going pro. McCreary ultimately decided to return to the Tigers, a decision that could pay major dividends for himself and the team. McCreary returns as Auburn's most-experienced cornerback and one of the standouts in a loaded secondary entering 2021.The offseason has forced the 6-foot, 190-pound Mobile native to make plenty of adjustments and step up his game, but with the season opener now in sight he seems eager to show off his improvements. "The main reason that I decided to come back was because my education. That's what I wanted first. And second, I can always improve my draft stock, so that wa s another reason, too," McCreary said Wednesday. "I feel like I'm going to be more patient because now I'm the guy who's playing off-man. We don't play it that much, so I feel like, throughout the season and the summer, I have improved better at that." M cCreary went into great detail in describing how different Auburn's new defense under Derek Mason is compared to what Kevin Steele called in the past. McCreary explained Auburn's cornerbacks are playing off-man coverages more now than compared to the pas t, when Steele had the corners press at the line of scrimmage. He explained the keys to the Tigers' off-man scheme are eyes, feet and a player's understanding of the game. He added that playing off gives the defenders more time to diagnose what's coming because they can see everything from the offense. - Opelika-Auburn News

New Auburn cornerbacks coach Zac Etheridge is walking into a situation that appears pretty close to ideal with his new position group this spring. Auburn welcomes back its top-two corners from last year - Roger McCreary and Nehemiah Pritchett - who might constitute one of to top cornerback duos in the SEC, if not the country, this season. In his first year as Auburn's top cornerback, McCreary looked the part, following in the footsteps of recent highly productive Auburn corners Noah Igbinoghene, Jamel D ean and Carlton Davis. Now McCreary, who could have declared for the draft early, is back for a second year as Auburn's No. 1 guy. - Birmingham News

Auburn cornerback Roger McCreary was a standout on the Tigers' defense in 2020, and he's not done yet. McCreary announced Monday that he will return to Auburn in 2021 for his senior season. That news is a major victory for the Tigers, which will have the ir top cornerback return for Bryan Harsin's first season at the helm of the program. The Tigers truly needed someone to step up in the secondary in 2020 after losing several key players from the previous season, and McCreary answered that call. The junio r was often locked on the opponent's top receiver, and he ended the season with 45 tackles, seven tackles for loss, six pass break-ups and three interceptions. - Opelika-Auburn News

The Tigers desperately needed someone to step up in the secondary after losing several key players from 2019, and McCreary answered that call. The junior was often locked on the opponent's top receiver, and he ended the season with 45 tackles, seven tack les for loss, six pass break-ups and three interceptions. "He's had an excellent year," then-Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said in November. "He's played with a lot of confidence. He's usually covering their top guy. We've got a lot of confidence in Roge r." McCreary did not play in the bowl game against Northwestern - interim head coach Kevin Steele didn't explain the reason for McCreary's absence - but his potential return would be a major victory for what would be a much-more experienced Auburn defens e in 2021. - Opelika-Auburn News

McCreary came into the season as a dependable cornerback, but he quickly established himself as one of the best in the league. In addition to his 26 tackles, he has two interceptions, three pass breakups and a forced fumble. He's under a lot of pressure, Steele said, but he's taken it upon himself to study and make himself into a smarter player. He understands his own job as well as how offenses try and attack. "So he's kind of taken it to the next level in that regard, and with that his confidence is v ery, very high," Steele said. "And so when you've got a skill set like he's got and you have high confidence, then you tend to play pretty well." - Birmingham News

Auburn cornerback Roger McCreary delivered what looked to be the game-changing play in the first half with a 102-yard pick-six to pad the Tigers' lead. While the interception return was ultimately reversed, McCreary still had an outstanding day for the T igers. McCreary's interception still counted to end Kentucky's would-be scoring drive to end the half, and he came through on multiple plays to the tune of four tackles and a pass break-up. McCreary was part of the game's first turnover and ultimately it s last, as he punched the ball out of Kentucky receiver Demarcus Harris' hands on the Auburn 11-yard line with just under two minutes to go in the game, at which point linebacker Owen Pappoe fell on the loose ball to effectively end the Wildcats' hopes o f a wild comeback. "At the end of the day, big-time players make big-time plays when we need one, and he did," Auburn safety Smoke Monday said of McCreary. "He prepared himself for this moment, and when it came, he seized it. That was a big play by Roger . He's one of the veteran guys that's really good on our defense who's going to really help us this year." - Opelika-Auburn News

For the third straight offseason, Auburn must replace its No. 1 cornerback following an early entry into the NFL Draft. This season, though, the Tigers must replace both of their starting cornerbacks following Noah Igbinoghene's decision to declare early and the graduation of Javaris Davis, as that duo started all 13 games at corner for Auburn in 2019. It's part of an offseason makeover in the secondary, where Auburn will be tasked with replacing four of its five starters from a year ago, with the lone exception coming at nickel, where Christian Tutt returns after making 12 starts in the slot last season. Junior Roger McCreary is expected to step in and take up the mantle at the Tigers' No. 1 cornerback in 2020 after being a supporting piece in each of his first two seasons. The former three-star signee took a considerable step forward as a sophomore, when he was targeted often when he was on the field. - Birmingham News
