Troy Andersen, Montana State, Player News

2021 ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): MLB Troy Andersen, MSU,...Andersen became the eighth Bobcat to capture Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year honors on Tuesday. He joins defensive end Brad Daly (2013), Bobby's brother, along with linebacker Jody Owens (2012), defensive end Dane Fletcher (2009), outside linebacker Roger Cooper (2004), safety and one-time MSU linebackers coach Kane Ioane (2003), Corey Widmer (1990), and outside linebacker Mark Fellows (1984). One thing Andersen doesn't have in common with most of those previous MVPs was almost constant position changes. After playing on offense for the Cats as a freshman and sophomore - he was Big Sky Freshman of the Year in 2017 as a running back and 1st Team All-Big Sky at quarterback in 2018 - he moved to outside linebacker in 2019. This season, he played middle linebacker.

According to MSU defensive coordinator Freddie Banks, Andersen's ability and willingness to move inside was like a key that unlocked the team's defensive potential. "(That move) let us play the style of defense we wanted to play," Banks said. "He plays really hard, really smart, he's the center of the defense so he makes all the checks for us. He's definitely our team's most valuable player in terms of the defense. I think (the position change) was easy for him because he played quarterback, so the transition wasn't very hard. And he's a leader by nature, I think he might have been born with that trait." - Montana State Football

2021 BIG SKY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Troy Andersen, LB, MSU,...Montana State's Troy Andersen was honored as the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first Bobcat to win the award since Brad Daly in 2013. The versatile linebacker is the leader of a stout Bobcat defense that has allowed just 13.2 points per game and a Big Sky-best 280.6 yards of total offense per game. Andersen averages 10.4 tackles per contest, which is tied for seventh in the nation this season. Andersen, who is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, was an All-Big Sky offense player before making the move to defense in 2019. - Big Sky Football

The Bobcats' First Team All-American linebacker, Troy Andersen, will redshirt the 2020 season due to a lower extremity injury. Andersen injured himself last season during the second half of the UC Davis game. He was originally scheduled to undergo surgery in February, but because of Covid-19, it didn't happen until early May. "I truly believe Troy is the best player in the FCS, and yes is it going to hurt for us to lose him? Yeah. Is it going to galvanize our team and put a bigger chip on our shoulder? You bet," Head Coach Jeff Choate said during a Zoom meeting with the media on Wednesday. The redshirt senior will finish his eligibility in 2021. - The Spokesman-Review

2019 ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Outside Linebacker, Troy Andersen, Junior, Montana State,...Andersen logged 11.5 tackles-for-loss with 6.5 sacks this season in time limited by injury. He reeled in all-league honors at linebacker, but also rushed for 336 yards and seven touchdowns as a wildcat-style quarterback. He finished fifth in the league in sacks and sixth in tackles-for-loss in spite of the playing time restrictions. He and Hill join a list of elite Bobcat linebackers - Mac Bignell, Alex Singleton, and Jody Owens (twice) - as first team all-league selections this decade. "It's awesome that Troy gets recognized as one of the best players in this league," Choate said. "I think he's one of the best 11 so he deserves to be a first team player." - Montana State Football

Troy Andersen threw for a touchdown and ran for another, Callahan O'Reilly had a 73-yard touchdown run and Montana State pounded Northern Colorado 45-14 on Saturday. O'Reilly's burst up the middle early in the third quarter, his only carry of the game, to put an exclamation mark on the Bobcats' running game, which piled up 452 yards. Three quarterbacks combined to go 14 of 21 for 113 yards for Montana State (7-3, 4-2 Big Sky Conference). Northern Colorado (2-7, 2-3) tied the game at 7 on a 10-yard interception return by Brooks Talkington late in the first quarter but the Bobcats scored the next 42 points.

Tucker Rovig, victimized by the pick six, completed a 75-yard drive with an 8-yard TD pass to Derryk Snell. After a field goal, Andersen, who capped MSU's opening possession with a 2-yard pass to Jason Scrempos, ended a short drive with an 11-yard run and a 24-7 halftime lead. Montana State opened the second half with a 1-yard TD run by Logan Jones, set up by his 57-yard run. O'Reilly's score came next and Lane Sumner had a 16-yard touchdown in early in the fourth. Jones finished with 122 yards on 11 carries. Rovig was 10 of 15 for 77 yards. Northern Colorado had 242 yards of offense, 220 through the air. Jacob Knipp was 27 of 38 with a late touchdown. - AP College Football

Troy Andersen ran for two touchdowns and had two tackles for loss to lead Montana State to a 38-17 win over Southeast Missouri State on Saturday night. After an error-filled first half, the Bobcats (1-1) scored 28 points in the third quarter accumulating 240 yards in the process. Andersen ran for 102 yards on just six carries. Isaiah Ifanse had 114 yards rushing in the first half, but sat out the second half with an undisclosed injury. "He's a special, selfless dude," MSU wide receiver Kevin Kassis said of Andersen. "We wouldn't be the same without him."

MSU, which came into the game one-spot behind SEMO at No. 13 in the FCS poll, got off to a hot start with Andersen running for a 38-yard touchdown on the Bobcats second play of the game. The Bobcats drove 63 yards for a field goal on their second possession, but struggled for the rest of the half. SEMO scored after picking up a fumbled snap on a punt attempt. The Redhawks (1-1) found the end zone three plays later when Daniel Santacaterina hit Kristian Wilkerson with a 5-yard pass. Kendrick Tiller connected on a 55-yard field goal for the Redhawks with no time remaining that tied the game 10-10 at halftime that was set up by a roughing the quarterback penalty. - AP College Football

2019 PRESEASON STATS FCS PAYTON AWARD WATCHLIST: Troy Andersen, Montana State, ATH, Jr., 6-3, 215,...Andersen earned First Team All-Big Sky honors at quarterback in 2018, and was named to the 2019 Preseason All-Big Sky team as a fullback. The Payton Award Watch List calls Andersen's position Athlete, which MSU head coach Jeff Choate says is appropriate. "I've talked about this," he said, "but we have to open our minds to not putting Troy in a box. We're going to use him (on offense) in ways that he'll be able to positively impact any given game the most. He could line up at running back, he'll take some snaps, he may play with Isaiah (Ifanse) in two-back sets, he may line up at tight end, he may split out as a receiver."

A 6-4, 228 lb junior from Dillon, Montana, Andersen also opens the 2019 as the projected starting Sam linebacker. He rushed for 1,412 yards and threw for 1,195 last season, and his 21 rushing touchdowns in 2018 set an MSU single-season record. His 1,927 rushing yards is already 12th in Bobcat history. He is one of five Big Sky Conference selections on the 25-player list. - Montana State Football

2019 PRESEASON ALL-BIG SKY FOOTBALL TEAM: FB: Troy Andersen, Jr., Montana State,...It may be a new year and a different position, but Montana State's Troy Andersen enters 2019 with the same expectations for Troy Andersen. Montana State's star who enters the 2019 season projected as a fullback on offense and a linebacker on defense was one of five Bobcats selected for the Preseason All-Big Sky Conference Team, announced Monday.

Andersen's likely offensive role aligns him with Isaiah Ifanse, who set MSU's freshman rushing record last season, in the backfield. Fourth-year head coach Jeff Choate likes the possibilities. "Troy is a dynamic player," Choate said of his star junior, "and it's incumbent on us as coaches to find ways for him to impact games the most. That may be as a running back in a two-back set, in a one-back set, as a tight end, as a receiver. He gives us opportunities and options." Andersen is listed as MSU's starting Sam linebacker entering 2019, as well. - Montana State Football
