Raheem Blackshear rushed for two touchdowns to lead No. 19 Virginia Tech to a 35-14 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday after a slow start. The Hokies (2-0, 2-0 ACC) scored on their first three possessions of the second half, including back-to-back TDs by Blackshear, in a game they led 14-7 at halftime. Virginia Tech broke open the game when Jalen Holston scored on a 29-yard, third-quarter run to take a 21-7 lead. Blackshear, who rushed for 58 yards, then scored on runs of 6 yards and 1 yard on en suing possessions to help the Hokies build a 35-7 cushion. "At halftime, it was obviously a tight ball game. I didn't feel like we were shocked it was close," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said. "I don't know that we're the team that can just blow th e doors off people. That's just not how we're built right now. "I didn't sense any panic or shock. That's what happens with teams that are overconfident or arrogant. They're shocked that the other team wants to play. We knew what we were getting into, so there was no shock, no panic. Those guys were ready to go back out there and play." Braxton Burmeister went 14 of 24 for 142 yards and a score for Virginia Tech, which finished with 375 yards. Virginia Tech running backs coach Adam Lechtenberg had simple advice for Raheem Blackshear when they reviewed film of the 2020 season before the start of spring practice. "Slow down," Lechtenberg said. That might seem counterintuitive considering Blacksh ear relied on his athleticism and 4.4 speed to become an immediate contributor for Rutgers in 2017 as a true freshman, but Lechtenberg made his point during those film sessions. "I was missing a lot of open gaps," Blackshear said. "I was like hitting a l ot of stuff too fast. So as a player I was really not afraid of making my reads correctly. So by me slowing down, now I've got a chance to make my reads and make my right cuts."Blackshear built his offseason training program around Lechtenberg's r ecommendation, and believes it's already paid off through four spring practices. The 5-foot-9, 194-pounder has shown improved (and slower) footwork amidst a crowded competition for playing time in Tech's backfield. The Hokies opened spring with eight sch olarship running backs on the roster competing to replace Khalil Herbert, the program's first 1,000-yard rusher in a decade, and even more on the way (four freshman backs are enrolling this summer). "I feel like it's going to be big and I'm going to take advantage of it," Blackshear said, of spring camp. Blackshear's modest numbers in the 40-14 win - three carries for 33 yards with a touchdown, one catch for 9 yards - paled in comparison to the ones put by Hooker (275 total yards and four touchdowns) and Khalil Herbert (200-plus all-purpose yards), but t he touchdown run was the kind of explosive play he hasn't made yet this season. "He came back (to practice) the day before the N.C. State game and was limited, hurt his hamstring and didn't practice much the next week," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said after the game. "He's kind of found his footing." The longest play from scrimmage for Blackshear going into Saturday's game was a 14-yard run in the opener. He had four carriers go for 10 or more yards in the first two games, but none last week agai nst North Carolina. He had seven rushes of 20 yards or more in his first two years at Rutgers and five receptions of 25 yards or more."He keeps working hard," Herbert said. "That was just really good run by him, I just loved to see that. He made s ome guys miss, broke a couple tackles, and you seen his speed on the outside." Fuente still envisions Blackshear developing into a dual threat of sorts at running back and receiver. Blackshear had a history of success at Rutgers in the multi-faceted role - as a sophomore he was named honorable mention All-Big Ten with 1,136 all-purpose yards - but during his slow start has only played a limited number of snaps in the slot receiver role. He came into Saturday's game with 31 carries for 120 yards (3.9 yar ds per carry) and three catches for one yard. Running back Raheem Blackshear will suit up for Virginia Tech this season. Tech was shocked when Blackshear's NCAA wavier request was initially denied, but ruling was overturned on appeal and the Rutgers transfer will be eligible to play this fall. Black shear joined the team as an early enrollee back in January with the coaching staff envisioning a multi-faceted role for the speedy back that included playing time at wide receiver and special teams.He excelled in all three areas at Rutgers where t he 5-foot-9, 192-pounder had 211 carries for 912 yards (4.3 yards per carry) and 80 catches for 810 receiving yards with 12 total touchdowns. He was honorable mention all-Big Ten (as voted on by the coaches) in 2018. "I've only seen him practice football four times, but he's a pretty remarkable talent," Fuente said. "There's probably four to five positions on either side of the ball that he could play. I mean, he is talented, highly intelligent and rarely skilled. So he's kind of a unique part of that. He can play in the slot, he can play tailback. He can do a lot of stuff." - Roanoke Times

So much is different for college football programs as they try to prepare for the possibility of a 2020 season this fall. But at Virginia Tech, one thing remains the same - the Hokies can't get a break from the NCAA when it comes to player waivers. Rutge rs transfer running back Raheem Blackshear had his request to play this season at Tech denied by the NCAA, coach Justin Fuente said the team learned Thursday. "We were shocked and saddened by that," Fuente said Friday during an online media session. "Rah eem was shocked. Our administration feels like we have a very strong case." Fuente said Tech will appeal the decision. "This comes through our administration and compliance," Fuente said. "But they feel good about our stance. They were surprised and I'm cautiously optimistic we can turn it around in relatively short order." - Roanoke Times

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors has come out against making changes to the transfer waiver process at this time. The Transfer Waiver Working Group recommended a one-time transfer waiver in the five sports (men's basketball, women's basketball base ball, men's ice hockey and football) that don't allow for immediate eligibility earlier this year. The Division I Council is still expected to vote on the proposal this month, but the Board of Directors' guidance could delay any change for the 2020-21 ac ademic year. "The board agreed to lift the moratorium on transfer legislation for the 2020-21 legislative cycle but recommended to the Council that changes to the waiver process as suggested by the working group are not appropriate at this time," the NCA A's statement said. "Board members recommended the waiver process be sensitive to student-athlete well-being, especially those impacted by COVID-19 in the interim period."That would mean Virginia Tech running back Raheem Blackshear will have to go through the same waiver process Brock Hoffman and Braxton Burmeister went through last year. The Hokies were 0 for 2 in 2019 with Hoffman's case getting national attention. Blackshear, who enrolled at Tech in January, likely faces an uphill battle witho ut the one-time transfer rule. First, a coaching change four games into the season and now a couple of Rutgers players look like they have called it a season as well. In order to remain eligible to redshirt, quarterback Art Sitkowski and running back Raheem Blackshear asked Rutgers in terim coach Nunzio Campanile to not play against Maryland on Saturday. By not playing a fifth game, the two can take advantage of an NCAA rule implemented last year that allows players to compete in four games while still being able to preserve a year of eligibility. "Am I disappointed by it? Incredibly. Do I understand it? I guess so. I guess that's the way the world is now," Campanile said after Rutgers lost 48-7. "I think that this is a game about your team, you know and it's about sacrificing person al accomplishment for the success of the team. But that's the world they live in and they have got a lot of people telling them, you know, worry about you, worry about you. I get it."Campanile was elevated to interim coach after Chris Ash was fire d four games into his fourth season with the Scarlet Knights (1-4, 0-3 Big Ten) last Sunday. Campanile announced the Sitkowski news after Thursday's practice. Blackshear's decision came later. Campanile said he could see Sitkowski (three games played) pl aying again this season, but he does not foresee Blackshear seeing the field again.
