UL will open the 2021 season nationally ranked in both of college football's major polls. The Ragin' Cajuns are 23rd in the Associated Press preseason Top 25, which was released Monday. The Cajuns also are No. 23 in the 2021 preseason USA TODAY Sports AF CA Coaches Poll, released last week. This marks the first time in program history UL has opened a season nationally ranked in either poll, according to a team spokesman. "It's pretty insignificant relative to what happens this season," coach Billy Napier said. "We're gonna have 12 opportunities in the regular season to prove ourselves one week at a time. Going into this season where we are, that's all kind of...based on the past. "I do think it's humbling. I certainly think it basically says that people respect what you're doing, what you've done in the past and maybe what you're capable of in the future," Napier added. "But it is just that: It's potential, and we're not about potential here. We're about performance." - Daily Advertiser

With a presence that inspires others to constantly be at their best, Levi Lewis does what any good leader should. UL's senior starting quarterback gets those around him to follow. But what separates Lewis from others? It may be the buy-in from those unde r his command. "Levi is the most-confident (person) I know on the team," Ragin' Cajuns running back Trey Ragas said. "The most hard-working person I know on the team. "So, with him, I know he's going to take this year very serious and he's going to give us his all." Which motivates his Cajun teammates to do the same as they prepare to open their 2020 season Saturday morning at No. 25 Iowa State. Yet for the product of Baton Rouge's Scotlandville Magnet High, there wasn't always a two-way sense of certai nty."The first year," said Rob Sale, who came in as UL's offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at the same time Billy Napier took over as head coach of the Cajuns prior to the 2018 season, "it kind of felt like (a) he-was-looking-at-us an d we-were-looking-at him type deal." Lewis merely threw for 3,050 yards with a 64.3 completion percentage (243-for-378) and 26 touchdowns last season, when UL went 11-3, made it to its second straight Sun Belt Conference championship game and beat Miami (Ohio) of the MAC at the LendingTree Bowl in Mobile. The 3,050 yards and 26 TD throws both were school records, and now Lewis is on national preseason watch lists for major awards including the Davey O'Brien, the Maxwell, the Manning and the Johnny Unita s Golden Arm. - Daily Advertiser

For Ragin' Cajuns senior-to-be quarterback Levi Lewis, the progression started in earnest in 2019. "I think Levi would be the first to tell you he played well, in particular down the stretch second half of the year," UL coach Billy Napier said. So now Le wis is ready for it: The next level, that is. And this spring, he's taking the first step toward bringing his game to it. But just what is it? How high is the ceiling? And precisely how is he going about reaching it? As Lewis sees it, it's all about deci sion-making.Lewis is learning more and more how to read body language from defenders tipping off what sort of coverage they're in, and how he can exploit that. "Obviously just watching more film," he said, "and applying it once I get (to) practice , and it's going to translate over to the game." Lewis always had a green light to change plays, depending on what he sees, under offensive play-caller Napier, who is preparing for his third season as head coach of the Cajuns. But the more Lewis has play ed, the longer his leash on decision-making has gotten. "We're at that point now where we know things," the Scotlandville High product from Baton Rouge said, "and it's just 'Get us in a good play.' - Daily Advertiser
