University of New Mexico senior quarterback Tevaka Tuioti has waited nine months to gain clearance for football activities after he sustained his third reported concussion. He won't wait anymore. Tuioti, who won the starting job before the season last ye ar, has not been cleared for the start of preseason fall camp, which begins Wednesday, UNM coach Danny Gonzales said during his press conference Tuesday. Rather than attempt to transfer to gain clearance and play elsewhere, Tuioti has decided to be an as sistant coach for the Lobos this season, Gonzales said."I've had conversations with Tevaka and he wants to be a part of our program," Gonzales said. "I think Tevaka and his family made a great decision for him to be a student coach on our staff. T hat's one of the most competitive young men that made a really tough decision, that I support fully. I'm proud of him because it was hard on him because he loves to compete. He loves to play. He did what was best for his future." Tuioti, who will assist coaching the quarterbacks, is expected to be available to the media after Wednesday night's practice, which is closed to the public. He will also help with the offense and special teams during practice. - Albuquerque Journal

The status of UNM quarterback Tevaka Tuioti will be revealed when preseason fall camp begins on Aug. 3, Gonzales said. Tuioti has yet to be cleared after three reported concussions, the latest occurring last Nov. 7 at Hawaii. Gonzales had said last month that he would announce before camp if Tuioti would be cleared or remain out. Tuioti, who won the starting job at the beginning of last season, will become a student assistant coach if he isn't cleared, Gonzales said. Tuioti hasn't spoken to the media si nce before the game against Hawaii, a decision made by Gonzales. During preseason fall camp, quarterbacks Terry Wilson (Kentucky transfer), Isaiah Chavez (Rio Rancho product) and Trae Hall are expected to compete for the starting job by taking the majori ty of the reps, Gonzales said. - Albuquerque Journal

University of New Mexico quarterback Tevaka Tuioti has yet to be cleared for team activities because of three reported concussions, the latest occurring on Nov. 7 against Hawaii. He has yet to be ruled out of team activities despite those concussions, ev en though multiple concussions can result in long-term disability, psychological issues and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), doctors say. And the University of New Mexico hasn't done much to resolve any mystery around its one-time starter.U NM second-year coach Danny Gonzales has said only that Tuioti checks in with medical staff weekly, and if he is not cleared before the start of preseason camp on Aug. 3, he'll become a student assistant coach. Tuioti's status for the season will be deter mined before camp begins, Gonzales said. UNM has shielded Tuioti from interview requests from the media. He hasn't spoken publicly since his latest injury in November. Gonzales says it is because he believes Tuioti doesn't have answers for his status wit h "all the scenarios, the unknown out there of what is going to transpire with him." Gonzales wants to wait until there is a final determination before making the quarterback available to the media. - Albuquerque Journal

Trae Hall appears set to start at quarterback for the Lobos for the third straight week. Tevaka Tuioti did not practice on Monday, Gonzales said, and has not been cleared to play since sustaining a concussion late in UNM's 39-33 loss at Hawaii on Nov. 7. "I have no idea (about Tuioti's status for the game)," Gonzales said. "That's frustrating." Tuioti, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound redshirt junior, has sustained three concussions, including one in September of 2017 and another in September of 2018. - Albuquerqu e Journal
