Big plays consistently crushed Virginia's defense, which yielded 29 passing plays that went for 30 yards or more. Only two other FBS squads allowed more. With disappointing defensive results last fall, Blount decided to use his additional year of eligibi lity for one final - and, with any luck, healthy - season in a Virginia uniform. "I've been super energetic," Blount said. "I'm looking forward to every day when we get to go practice. Being sidelined for so long, just hungry to experience the spring to its fullest." While Blount wished he was available more last season, he appreciated watching his underclassman peers earn game reps.He saw Antonio Clary, a junior this season, grow into his own and become a more consistent option at safety. Coen K ing, another junior, led Virginia with 10 tackles in the season-ending loss to Virginia Tech. Both players were given significant playing time in 2020 due to injuries to usual starters. "I feel like there were a lot of identities that were found," Blount said. As for Blount, he's healthy during spring practices for the first time in his Virginia career. "Joey Blount is playing really well this spring," head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "This is his first offseason, which has been amazing. Even though h e's been here quite a while, it's the first time he's been through an offseason and been healthy. Virginia's Fralin Family Head Football Coach Bronco Mendenhall announced today (Dec. 21) that nine fourth-and fifth-year Cavaliers will return to the roster for the 2021 season. The group of players includes - DE Mandy Alonso, DE Adeeb Atariwa, FS Joey B lount, OLB Elliott Brown, CB De'Vante Cross, OG Chris Glaser, CB Nick Grant, WR Ra'Shaun Henry and OT Ryan Nelson. Eight of the nine players have already completed their undergraduate degrees. By the end of spring semester, all nine will have earned thei r undergraduate degrees.Blount (Atlanta, Ga.) started all five games he appeared in during the 2020 season. Battling an injury that forced him to miss five games, Blount finished with 25 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, one interception an d two pass breakups. A 2020 Campbell Trophy semifinalist, Blount has appeared in 43 career games with 219 career tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and six interceptions. Blount graduated last summer (three years) with a degree in inter-American studies. He is working on a master's degree in education. - Virginia Football

Blount, who returned from injury Saturday against Boston College, is expected to suit up again this weekend. He says he rushed back from a leg injury earlier this season. After playing against Wake Forest, Blount didn't take the field until Saturday's wi n over Boston College. He feels healthy now and ready to finish the season. Blount, a senior, added Monday that he hasn't made a decision about whether this year will be his last or if he'll return to UVa and use the extra eligibility offered to players by the NCAA. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
