If Ball State football took anyone by surprise in 2020, it is unlikely similar success in 2021 will result in the same response. According to the Mid-American Conference's preseason media poll, BSU was selected as the favorite to win in both the MAC's We st Division and the conference's championship game. Ball State earned 11 first-place votes and 114 total points to lead its division. Ball State earned seven votes to lead those picked to win the MAC title game. Last year, when the Cardinals won the MAC and went on to win a bowl game during a 7-1 season, head coach Mike Neu's squad was picked to finish third in its division. And it was fourth among teams with at least one vote to win the MAC. From that 2020 team, BSU brings back the vast majority of its starters and 10 of the 12 athletes who earned All-MAC recognition - including co-defensive player of the year Brandon Martin and starting quarterback Drew Plitt. - Star Press

Drew Plitt was there Tuesday, participating during all the team reps, as Ball State football opened spring practice inside of its new indoor facility. Every time a snap came he'd make a read based on what he saw the defense do. He'd progress through his footwork. Whether it was his choice on a run-pass option, a decision he made pre-snap or post-snap or something else, he was putting on tape something his coaches could grade him on. Plitt just wasn't on the receiving end of any of those snaps as he has been so often at quarterback for BSU in recent seasons; the likes of John Paddock, Elliot Charlebois and Eddie Schott were.Because right now, that's not what Cardinals head coach Mike Neu feels is best for Plitt. It's an opportunity for Neu and hi s staff to see more clearly just how much Paddock, Charlebois and Schott have developed. And even though Plitt's time in that opening practice skewed heavily toward mental reps instead of live ones, his only throws coming during individual periods, that doesn't mean it has to take away from how engaged he is. "I'm taking the same thing, talking to coach about what I'm seeing, kind of what throws are happening and what's going on," said Plitt, who's taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility the N CAA awarded fall athletes like Plitt amid the pandemic. "So, for me, it's just - it's way more mental, but...I've got to focus more because I'm not playing, I'm not the one making the throws. I'm behind and I'm kind of grading myself when I go and watch film on...the decision-making process that I had." - Star Press

The way Drew Plitt sees it, although he and some of his fellow Ball State football teammates had individual decisions to make, he thought one person deciding to return would have a domino effect on the rest. Plitt, the Cardinals' redshirt senior quarterb ack in 2020, was one of 22 athletes on BSU's roster who faced the choice of coming back to the program for an extra year. After the NCAA's ruling that provided fall athletes with an additional year of eligibility, everyone knew that moment would come. An d while Plitt did his best to focus on the season and the season alone this fall, after Ball State won the Mid-American Conference title last month Plitt began to more seriously consider his options. The same goes for Justin Hall, a senior wide receiver this past season for the Cardinals, too. Plitt said there was even a group chat with various teammates. - Star Press

The Car dinals (6-1) won their first MAC championship since 1996, the year before the title game originated. They held Patterson to 47 yards on 18 carries after he'd been averaging over 200 a game. Patterson left with an apparent right leg injury in the third qu arter, but he was able to return in the fourth.By then, Buffalo (5-1) was playing catch-up. The game turned when Ball State scored three touchdowns in the final 5:55 of the first half to take a 35-21 lead. The Bulls trailed by 10 and had the ball in the red zone when running back Kevin Marks dropped a fourth-down pass in the final quarter. Buffalo, which hadn't played a game closer than 19 points in this short season, was trying for its first MAC title since 2008. That year, the Bulls knocked off an undefeated and nationally ranked Ball State team for the championship. The Cardinals returned the favor this time. - AP College Football
