With the NCAA granting an additional year of eligibility for fall sport student-athletes last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, questions arose surrounding which seniors would return. At Western Kentucky, DeAngelo Malone was one of the biggest - if not th e biggest - question marks. The defensive end and 2019 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year elected to return shortly after the conclusion of the 2020 season, and has bigger goals in mind for this fall with the Hilltoppers in the early stages of f all camp. "We're very excited for the upcoming season," Malone said Tuesday at the team's media day. "I feel like we've got a lot to prove and I feel like we've got the guys to do it." Like most in his position, Malone is hoping to eventually take the ne xt step and play in the NFL.He posted productive seasons throughout his career, but wanted to use the offseason to improve his body and return to the dominant force he was in 2019 when he became the first Hilltopper to be named C-USA's Defensive P layer of the Year. For the second consecutive year, Western Kentucky defensive end DeAngelo Malone has been named to the Nagurski Trophy Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America announced Tuesday. It is the second preseason watch list for Malone, who on July 19 was honored by the Bednarik Award, which recognizes the most outstanding defensive player in college football. The Atlanta native is one of five Conference USA players and one of 22 defensive ends on the initial list of 90. Meanwhile, there were no o ther players from Kentucky schools. Malone enters his fifth season as a Hilltopper after exercising his option for an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through four campaigns, he has become one of the most accomplished defenders in WKU history.In 48 career games - 39 of them starts - he has made 255 total tackles (135 solo, 120 assisted) while racking up 42.5 tackles for loss and 25 sacks. UTSA junior running back Sincere McCormick was selected as the Preseason C-USA Offensive Player of the Year and UTSA junior punter Lucas Dean earned Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year honors. The accolades were voted on by the league's 14 head coaches. Malone, an Atlanta native who was named to the 2021 Bednarik Award Watch List on Monday, has made 255 total tackles (135 solo, 120 assisted) while racking up 42.5 tackles for loss and 25 sacks in his first four seasons as a Hilltopper.Malone finished with 71 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, six sacks, two forced fumbles, nine quarterb ack hurries and also blocked a pair of kicks in 2020 for the Hilltoppers in 11 appearances. Western Kentucky has announced the dates of its 2021 spring football practice schedule, which begins Tuesday. Third-year head coach Tyson Helton and the Hilltoppers will hold 13 practices leading up to the 2021 Spring Game on April 17. Fans will be able to attend the Spring Game with free admission. Start time is currently TBD, and additional details will be released at a later date. All Tuesday and Thursday practices will be closed to the public. Helton posted a 14-11 overall record (including a 10-5 m ark in Conference USA play) and reached a bowl game in both of his first two years at WKU. - BG Daily News

The reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year is returning to The Hill for one more ride. On Sunday evening, Hilltoppers’ Defensive End DeAngelo Malone announced via his Twitter account that he would be returning for his senior season at Wes tern Kentucky and forego the 2020 NFL Draft. As Marshall's offense starts to watch film of Western Kentucky, there will be one player who stands out during the film session. That player is Western Kentucky defensive end DeAngelo Malone, and he stands out for good reason. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound sen ior from Atlanta, Georgia, has made a career out of living in the offensive backfield during his time with the Hilltoppers. Malone is a combination of speed and power off the edge that has proven to be a nightmare for the opposition to handle. Such was t he case again on Saturday when Malone instantly got the game's defensive tone kicked off with a sack of Middle Tennessee quarterback Asher O'Hara before later blocking a field goal in the Hilltoppers' 20-17 road win over the Blue Raiders.Malone ha d the Herd's attention as much as any Western Kentucky player over the last two weeks as they prepared for this week's contest against the Hilltoppers. "We're preparing for him as much anyone," Marshall offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey said. "I think he 's a really good player." While DeAngelo Malone has been solid to start the season (17 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack and a forced fumble), the Hilltoppers defense has not lived up to the preseason hype so far. Western Kentucky has struggled is against the run. The Hill toppers have one of the worst rushing defenses in the country, ranking 68th overall and gives up an average of 249 yards per game. In their season-opener against Louisville, the Cardinals rushed for 183 yards and a pair of touchdowns. That was nothing co mpared to what Liberty did a week later. The Flames had no issues against the Hilltoppers as they rushed for 354 yards and four touchdowns. The Hilltoppers' 10 total ranks tied for third with Charlotte - behind UAB's 14 and 12 for Southern Miss. Western Kentucky has announced that the team's 2020 football season opener will be moved ahead by two days. Originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5, the Hilltoppers' matchup against UT Chattanooga will be changed to Thursday, Sept. 3. In addition, kic koff time for the opener against the Mocs will be at 6 p.m. It will be the fourth time in the past six seasons that WKU's season opener will be on a Thursday night. The Hilltoppers' 2019 season started with a Thursday night contest vs. Central Arkansas, while the 2016 opener vs. Rice and 2015 kickoff at Vanderbilt were also Thursday night matchups. Conference USA has announced the league's bowl lineup that will span the six-year cycle from 2020-25. The conference is guaranteed seven bowl appearances in each year of the new cycle. "We are very pleased with our future bowl lineup," said C-USA Commiss ioner Judy MacLeod. "Our teams will continue to have postseason opportunities in outstanding destinations that are very accessible to our schools and their fans. We are also excited to have additional flexibility to create great matchups." As part of the new bowl cycle, C-USA will annually send teams to the Bahamas Bowl against a Mid-American Conference opponent, and to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, against a Sun Belt Conference school. The league has participated in all six Bahamas Bowls and has p laced a team in the New Orleans Bowl 14 times in its first 18 years. As previously announced, the league will continue its relationship with the Independence Bowl. C-USA is guaranteed to send a team to the Shreveport, Louisiana-based bowl in 2021 and 202 5, while holding a secondary agreement with the bowl in the other years of the cycle. - Charlotte Observer

NOV 25 CONFERENCE USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU junior DE Deangelo Malone spearheaded a WKU defense that held Southern Miss to its fewest points at home in six years, as the Hilltoppers took home a 28-10 victory in Hattiesburg. Malone had two tac kles for loss, including 1.5 sacks, and seven total tackles on the day. But his biggest play of the game was forcing a fumble on a strip sack, then recovering the fumble and taking it into the end zone for a 5-yard scoop-and-score touchdown in the fourth quarter.It was WKU's first fumble return for a TD since 2014. Earlier in the game, Malone set the Hilltoppers' single-season record in the program's FBS Era (since 2009) for tackles for loss.
