Tre Sterling, Oklahoma State, Player News
|
Tre Sterling knew well before the end of the season he would return for another year with Oklahoma State. Sterling took to heart conversations he had with family and former teammates in guiding his quick decision. "I mean it was a pretty easy decision at the end of the season, I knew, I think four games before the Cheez-It Bowl that I was going to come back," Sterling said. " Just hearing from my dad, other people who are in the league like A.J. Green and stuff like that. I'd hear from them and stuff li ke that and teams talking, the best decision for me was definitely to come back and build my draft stock..."I was just treading unknown waters if I would've left this year and I didn't want to be in that situation and go undrafted, not make a team and so mething like that. So, I was just going to come back and build my draft stock as much as I can."So what does Sterling think he can work on to improve his draft stock? "You can always get better as a safety at man coverage - whether it's on tight e nds, slots, outside receivers - because I've been in every situation possible," Sterling said. "So just working on man coverage more, working on my breaks out of either middle of the field, flat, curl read, hook zone, stuff like that. "Just working on tr ansition from being still to accelerating and stuff like that. Just doing stuff that the NFL scouts want to see." - Stillwater Press

Tre Sterling called his shot. The Oklahoma State safety, after taking some ribbing in practice last week, predicted he would return an interception for a touchdown in Saturday's game against Texas Tech. Midway through the third quarter, Sterling leaped i n front of a pass, fought to keep his balance, then outran everyone to the end zone for a crucial momentum-changing touchdown in the 50-44 Cowboy victory. But it wasn't dumb luck or a crazy coincidence that Sterling ended up at the right place at the rig ht time for his pick-six. "They had been doing (that route) all game, and as the game progressed on, some of the team caught onto some tips from the quarterback, some hand signals," Sterling said. "I saw him do one of the tips, the hand signal for a slan t, so I just had to get in that lane to be there to affect the play."And he did far more than affect the play. He put the cherry on top of a special day. A junior from Sunnyvale, Texas, Sterling finished with nine tackles, second-most on the team behind senior linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga's 11. Sterling had 1.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and a pass breakup to go with his 65-yard interception return. For the season, he's second on the team with 57 tackles and leads the team with 7.5 t ackles for loss. - Daily Oklahoman
