SEPT 13 BIG 12 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LD Brown, Oklahoma State, RB/KR, Sr.,...Brown's 98-yard kickoff return against Tulsa tied for the seventh-longest in school history, and was the longest since Tyreek Hill returned one 99 yards for a score at Kansas in 2014. The play came with OSU trailing by three points in the fourth quarter and put the Cowboys on top for good. Brown led all players in the game with 141 all-purpose yards. The senior RB also carried the ball nine times and made a catch. - Big 12 Football

Jaylen Warren shed three tackles to punch in an 11-yard touchdown run that gave Oklahoma State enough insurance to beat Tulsa 28-23 on Saturday. The Cowboys trailed 14-7 entering the fourth quarter, but took control of the nonconference game with a Spenc er Sanders touchdown throw, LD Brown's 98-yard kickoff return for a score and Warren's late run. Oklahoma State's defense helped it avoid a rare loss to its Turnpike Classic rival, limiting the Golden Hurricane offense to four third-down conversions on 1 3 attempts and 17 points. "I was proud of our defense for continuing to put us in a great situation," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "… They continue to play well, as we try to grow up a little bit on offense and get some young players developed and kind of work through a few things." Tulsa, which fell to FCS program UC Davis last week, looked poised to beat Oklahoma State for the first time since 1998 and win its first game in Stillwater since 1951.The Golden Hurricane forced a 7-7 tie at halftime, courtesy Justin Wright's 55-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the second quarter. Tulsa couldn't overcome the Cowboys' fourth-quarter explosion, even after adding a touchdown with 3:06 to play. OSU recovered an on-side kick an d ran out the clock. Similar to its narrow victory over Missouri State last Saturday, Oklahoma State's offense struggled to find its footing, even with its starting quarterback back in the lineup. Sanders, who missed the team's season opener, finished wi th 173 passing yards on 15-of-26 passing to go with two touchdowns and an interception. "I think everybody in this building is going to tell me I played good," Sanders said, "but I'm gonna honest with myself, I got to play better." - Oklahoma State/AP Co llege Football

LD Brown didn't follow his senior teammates when declaring his plans to take advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the pandemic. There was no tweet. No grand announcement. "It was literally kind of last minute on my decisi on coming back, as well," Brown said. "… It was kind of like, 'Oh well, you know now." Flying under the radar is how his college career has been at Oklahoma State. That is, until last season when a hobbled Chuba Hubbard thrust Brown into a bigger role out of the backfield. He suddenly went from an afterthought during his first few seasons in Stillwater - rushing for a combined 636 yards on 101 carries with six touchdowns over three seasons - to the incumbent for the starting role this fall. "It's just unfinished business, that was really the thing," the super senior tailback said. "My mindset was I could come back to this, because I missed three games last year, and to me it was just like I missed some stuff out there." - Stillwater Press

According to Cowboy football coach Mike Gundy, the returning tailback has put up some fast numbers coming off his injury late in the season. "LD, we tested last week, and he ran 4.37 or 4.39, so he's rolling pretty good," Gundy said. "He's been here a lo ng time. You can't ever replace experience, in my opinion. So it's good to have him back." But using Brown in the ground game isn't the only way Dunn hopes to utilize the veteran tailback. In Hubbard's final two seasons, Dunn - who is the longtime receiv ers coach for the Cowboys - worked with the future NFL tailback on his catching skills. And with that, there was an increase of using Hubbard in the passing game to add another wrinkle to the offense. It's a scheme Dunn wants to carry forward with the DeSoto, Texas, native. "I'd love to get him in space, on the perimeter, because we feel that if LD is one-on-one in space with a linebacker, that's advantage Cowboys," Dunn said. "I'd like to get him out there doing that, but right now, we're just fo cused holding up in that pocket in protecting. Hopefully we can expand that role." Dunn also saw what can happen to his lead tailback if there is not a way to split carries. Hubbard was relied upon so heavily during the 2019 season that he showed signs o f wear and tear late into the season. The Cowboy coaching staff is hopeful the talent behind Brown - led by junior college product Dezmon Jackson, who exploded in the three regular season games Brown and Hubbard were absent, coupled with Richardson and U tah State transfer Jaylen Warren - can help supplement the body blows out of the backfield this upcoming season. - Stillwater Press

Both Dunn and head coach Mike Gundy spoke glowingly about the depth of the running back position, but both also spoke to the gifts sixth-year senior LD Brown has shown throughout the winter. Gundy said Brown was clocked below a 4.4-second 40-yard dash la st week at the conclusion of strength coach Rob Glass' winter conditioning program. With Dezmon Jackson, Dominic Richardson and graduate transfer Jaylen Warren in the mix, running back might be the deepest position on the team. "LD is rolling pretty good , has a lot of experience, been here a long time," Gundy said. "You can't ever replace experience. "We have a number of guys that can take some of the load away from him, because as you know, those guys get beat up. Hopefully we can keep those guys healt hy and not have to take as many hits." - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma State was missing so many offensive players to injuries this week that coach Mike Gundy joked he took most of the reps at running back, even though he's a 53-year-old ex-quarterback who was hardly known for his wheels. Good thing the Cowboys' de fense showed up against Kansas State. Jason Taylor II returned a fumble 85 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, and Oklahoma State stopped the Wildcats' 2-point try that would have tied the game with 2:08 to go, allowing the No. 14 Cowboys t o escape with a 20-18 victory Saturday night that kept their Big 12 title hopes alive."We don't ever talk about it," Gundy said, "but they need the credit this week for fighting through where they were and finding aw ay to win on the road and play this game. It's extremely difficult when you don't have your guys practicing, even though they're some veteran guys. You need to practice." Spencer Sanders was held to just 108 yards passing without dynamic wide receiver Tylan Wallace and with running b ack Chuba Hubbard slowed by an injury. LD Brown helped to pick up the load, running for 110 yards, as Oklahoma State (5-1, 4-1) leaned on a defense that was trampled by Texas a week ago. - AP College Football

It's unlikely the Oklahoma State offense will get 60-plus yards from Brown every game, especially if/when quarterback Spencer Sanders returns from an ankle injury. But Brown has showcased he can be more consistent for the Cowboys, which will lead the coa ching staff to working him onto the field more often. And that can only be a positive for Hubbard. The Canadian running back was clearly gassed in the final regular season games last season - with his only back-to-back games averaging less than 5 yards p er carry coming against West Virginia and Oklahoma.Hubbard has a quiet 49 carries for 194 yards and two scores this season - at times not looking nearly as explosive as Brown - and part of the reason for his lower numbers are due to the effectiven ess of Brown in complementing the running game. Oklahoma State's star tailback will likely get on track, sparking interest again from the NFL scouts, but Brown has gotten onto the radar of those same scouts and on Big 12 defenses. And not having to rely on one bell-cow in the backfield will keep the Cowboys on conference championship contenders, especially in the latter part of the season with two running backs splitting the beating on the ground. - Stillwater Press
