Jake Hummel could read a depth chart. He also knew talent when he saw it. The Dowling Catholic product could do a little math, too. Despite playing as a true freshman, Hummel had Marcel Spears a year ahead and a spot above of him at linebacker. Spears, a three-time all-Big 12 selection, wouldn't be surrendering a starting linebacker spot. That left, Hummel knew, just one season for him to show what he could do as a starter for the Cyclones. As preparation for that lone year began, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, throwing everything into question. Eventually, though, the football season would come to be and, because of the NCAA's blanket waiver of additional eligibility, Hummel gets the chance to build upon his best season of football at the collegiate level . "This extra year, I knew I was going to have it," Hummel said Wednesday, "and I knew right away I was going to come back. "After last season I'm only more hungry to get better and work on myself." Hummel excelled in his first year as a starter, earning honorable mention all-conference honors after starting all 12 games and finishing second on the Cyclones with 77 tackles. - Des Moines Register
