An Iowa State-Oklahoma Big 12 Conference championship game rematch? Don't bet against it. Matt Campbell's Cyclones were picked to finish second in preseason balloting by the media. Who was picked first? Oklahoma, which beat Iowa State 27-21 in the 2020 championship game. That's been the anticipated pick since so many Cyclones opted to return for 2021. "We've proven a whole lot, to be honest," Campbell told reporters during spring practice. "We are outcome-aware, but our purpose and our process and our ability to become better in our process - I think it's exciting that there's young men that want to do that, even at this age." Eight Cyclones were selected to the media's all-Big 12 preseason football team Wednesday, including All-American tight end Charlie Kolar being the only unanimous selection. Linebacker Mike Rose was picked to be the preseason defensive player of the year. - Des Moines Register

Faced with one of the most consequential decisions of his life, Charlie Kolar flipped a coin. Not so much to render a verdict, though, as to give him some insight into his own thinking about the prospect of staying for a fifth season with the Iowa State football team or leaving for the NFL. "My parents taught me this technique - when you can't make a decision, flip a coin and you say you're going to make a decision based on the coin flip," the All-American tight end said. "The way you feel afterward gives you a pretty good idea of what you actually feel (about a decision)." So, Kolar flipped a coin after the 2020 season. "I think it landed for Iowa State," he recalled, "and I felt good about it."

The choice to return to Ames for another season was certainly one Iowa State felt good about, keeping one of the nation's top tight ends in the fold going into a season in which the Cyclones will be ranked in the top-10 and have College Football Playoffs aspirations. "He's light years ahead of where he was going into last season and we're only in April right now," Iowa State tight ends coach Taylor Mouser said. "The steps that we could take over the next months before the season, there are still a lot of areas we can get better at, as crazy as that sounds." The 6-foot-6, 257-pound Kolar had 44 catches for 591 yards and seven touchdowns last season, but in addition to simply being a year older and more experienced, there's reason to expect even better performance in 2021. - Des Moines Register

Add an All-American tight end and an All-Big 12 starting safety to the impressive list of Iowa State football players returning next season. Charlie Kolar and Greg Eisworth both said on social media Sunday morning they’ll be parts of what could be an exciting and expectation-filled 2021 season. Both have been rock-solid in helping the Cyclones to an impressive three-season run that includes a Fiesta Bowl victory, playing in the Big 12 championship game for the first time, and winning 24 of 38 games, including 19 of 27 against conference opponents. - Des Moines Register

Tom Manning, Iowa State's offensive coordinator knows a thing or two when it comes to coaching tight ends. He took a hiatus from Matt Campbell's Iowa State staff in 2018 to coach the Indianapolis Colts tight ends. He returned to the Cyclones after that season, not only with some NFL tight-end tricks to suggest, but also with a knowledge of what it takes to be an NFL tight end. Because of that knowledge, I asked Manning on Tuesday what kind of professional Kolar would make - whenever that decision comes. It's a foregone conclusion Kolar will play in the NFL. It's just a matter of when.

"I think he'll be a really good one, whenever that day comes," Manning said. "Football is really important to him. He has a great work ethic. He's very skilled, and he's very good at what he does." He's an offensive threat, with all right speed, and at 6 feet 6 by 257 pounds, can a hold his own catching passes in traffic, on the edge and in his specialty, being a red zone mismatch that quarterback Brock Purdy can easily spot. Each of Kolar's five touchdown passes in 2020 have been on plays that started within opponents' 22-yard line - 3-yarders against Texas Tech and Kansas, a 22-yarder against Baylor, 6 yards against Kansas State, and 16 yards against West Virginia. - Des Moines Register

2020 MACKEY AWARD SEMIFINALIST: Charlie Kolar, Iowa State,...Kolar, a junior from Norman, Okla., is having another fantastic season after earning All-America honors in 2019, leading all Big 12 tight ends and ranking in the top-10 nationally among tight ends in catches (33), receiving yards (446) and touchdown catches (5) in nine games played. Kolar, who has the fifth-longest reception streak in school history at 22 games, is the leader of the best tight end unit in the nation. Kolar, Chase Allen, Dylan Soehner and Easton Dean have a combined 64 receptions and 854 receiving yards, the best nationally among all FBS tight units. Kolar has the most career catches by a tight end in school history (95) and has 15 career touchdown catches, tying for fourth in school history. - Iowa State Football

Breece Hall scored on a 3-yard run with 1:25 remaining, and No. 15 Iowa State held off last-minute drive by Sam Ehlinger and No. 20 Texas to remain in first place in the Big 12 with a 23-20 victory Friday. After Iowa State sacked Ehlinger on third down, Texas’ Cameron Dicker barely missed left with a 58-yard field goal attempt as time expired. The Cyclones (7-2, 7-1) have almost locked up a spot in the Big 12 championship game for the first time. Hall gained 91 yards on 20 carries, his first game under 100 this season, but had 30 on the final 69-yard touchdown drive. Quarterback Brock Purdy connected with tight ends Charlie Kolar and Dylan Soehner for the other 39 yards. Iowa State trailed 20-16 early in the fourth quarter after bad two-play sequence for Texas (5-3, 4-3) helped the Cyclones get a field goal by Connor Assalley. Purdy completed 25 of 36 for 312 yards and one touchdown. Kolar made six receptions for 131. - AP College Football

Preseason All-American tight end Charlie Kolar already has one personal victory under his belt with an "extra-special" win over Oklahoma, the university located in his home town that didn't offer him a scholarship. The Cowboys did offer Kolar, but not until after he was already committed to Campbell's program. "That's a hard decision when a school in your home state comes in on you in the recruiting process," Campbell said. "I think it says a lot about who Charlie is. At that time, Charlie had a brother that was at Oklahoma State as well, so I know there was personal meaning toward getting that scholarship offer. It takes a lot of courage to kind of leave home and stay committed to us. "I really appreciate his courage. Charlie comes from a great family with great character. We're really grateful that he did make that decision because he's certainly been a big pillar of us continuing to grow as a program." Kolar, a junior, has 12 catches for 134 yards and a touchdown since returning from an injury that kept him out of Iowa State's opener. - Ames Tribune

Norman North alumnus Charlie Kolar played a huge role in Iowa State's victory. The former T-Wolf and current Cyclone tight end recorded 66 yards on a team-leading four catches. The win marks Kolar's second win over OU in his college career - although he was still redshirting as a freshman when the Cyclones last beat the Sooners in 2017. - Norman Transcript

Charlie Kolar had a workmanlike five receptions for 27 yards during the Cyclones' 37-34 victory at TCU Saturday. Not great. Not horrible. Workmanlike. It's a good start for what's ahead - most immediately, the angry Sooners next Saturday in Ames. The important part about the pre-season All-American tight end's return is that he helped Brock Purdy's comfort level. I still don't think the Cyclones' quarterback looks as at ease as he's been, but maybe that's because he's just getting used to being reunited with his 2019 go-to receiver. Kolar didn't play in the opening loss against Louisiana. We hear he hadn't practiced a lot since workouts resumed. A lower-body injury set him back, but he started Saturday and was back to doing what he does. Cyclones deep receivers still unable to get adequate consistent separation from defensive backs, Purdy needed his buddy Kolar back on the field. It's not like they worked magical big plays on what was an otherwise Big Play Saturday. They just did the efficient stuff, and sometimes, that's all it takes. - Des Moines Register

Charlie Kolar is hurt: Purdy understandably gets so much of the offensive attention for the Cyclones, but tight end Charlie Kolar is comparable as a talent and pro prospect. The preseason All-American, though, was in sweatpants Saturday with what Iowa State called a "lower body injury." The Cyclones have depth at the position with Chase Allen, Dylan Soehner and Easton Dean, but Kolar is the star and the game-changer. Iowa State can make due without him, but they're a less dynamic offense when he's not on the field. It's unclear if Kolar will be available later this month at TCU. - Des Moines Register

The John Mackey Award is given annually to the nation's best tight end. Kolar, who was also a first-team Academic All-American, has 10 career touchdown catches to tie for fourth among active FBS tight ends. It is the second watch list that Kolar has been named to this summer after earning a spot on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List on Thursday. - Iowa State Football

A native of Norman, Okla., Kolar was one of eight semifinalists for the award in 2019. He led all Big 12 tight ends in receptions (51), receiving yards (697) and receiving touchdowns (7). His 697 receiving yards broke ISU's season record for tight ends and ranked sixth nationally among FBS tight ends.   The plan is now officially for Jack Trice Stadium to be half as full as it usually is during home football games. That much talked-about possibility became the current reality Wednesday, when the university posted campus-wide mitigation principles for the 2020-21 school year on its website. "As guided by the Governor, the CDC, Iowa Department of Public Health and other state and federal health experts, the current plan is for a 50-percent capacity limit for events at Jack Trice Stadium, including football," the message states, regarding the 61,500-seat stadium. "Additional mitigation strategies will be used to reduce the risk of COVID-19's spread, such as physical distancing, face coverings, electronic ticketing and crowd management designed to reduce fan congestion and contact."

"More information about COVID-19 mitigation strategies at Jack Trice Stadium, Hilton Coliseum and other athletic venues will be distributed prior to the opening of any venue to the public for a sporting event," the posting stated. The 50% benchmark goes along with what athletics director Jamie Pollard wrote in a May 26 message to fans, in which he said: "Attendance at Jack Trice Stadium would be limited to approximately 50 percent capacity in order to meet the current guidelines established by state and local officials." - Des Moines Register

Iowa State was scheduled to begin its practices on March 24, which will likely be delayed in accordance with Big 12 policy due to concerns of the coronavirus outbreak. Players, however, have already had an extended winter workout period to allow time to adjust to the new strength and conditioning program implemented by Dave Andrews, who came aboard from Pittsburgh. When coach Matt Campbell and his staff arrived in Ames four years ago, they saw the tight ends as a position that required a total rebuild. The only course of action they saw was to get on the recruiting trail to find high school players that fit into a vision of a hybrid position.

Four complete seasons, particularly the last one, have paid dividends to the work ISU did all those years ago. Chase Allen, Dylan Soehner and Charlie Kolar make up the three-headed monster for the Cyclones, with each exhibiting skill sets that are unique to one another. Allen has fought through several injuries in his career, but had 17 catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns as a redshirt junior. Soehner, at 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds, suffered a leg injury that required surgery at Kansas State, but seven catches for 107 yards and a score. Kolar, meanwhile, turned in one of the best seasons in ISU history by a tight end. The rising redshirt junior had 51 catches for 697 yards and seven touchdowns last year and earned all-Big 12 first team and All-America second team honors. - Ames Tribune
