Statistically, Western Michigan's offense was one of the most explosive units in college football last season, cracking the top 25 in five categories and leading the nation in yards per completion. The NFL took notice, as speedy wide receiver D'Wayne Esk ridge went in the second round of April's NFL draft, and the big-play nature of the Broncos' attack also caught the eye of Bryce Nunnelly, a two-time all-conference wide receiver at Tennessee Chattanooga.The 6-foot, 195-pound senior entered the tr ansfer portal following his team's coronavirus-shortened 2020 campaign, and when looking for a landing spot, two things stood out about WMU: the Broncos' high-scoring offense and his connection with receivers coach Greg Harbaugh, who coached Nunnelly's p osition at Chattanooga in 2018. "I would say that one of the biggest things - well, there were a few good things - but one was that the offense was really good," Nunnelly said of his WMU pick. "They averaged - I don't know exactly how many it was, close to 40, if not more than 40 points last year. It's an RPO-heavy offense, the receivers are heavily involved, and also coach Harbaugh, I had a previous relationship with him at Chattanooga. He was here, and that was another big reason why I decided to come here." Nunnelly's estimation of the Broncos' scoring offense wasn't far off, with WMU averaging 41.7 points per game in 2020, which was good for ninth nationally. - Kalamazoo Gazette

In 2018, it was linebacker Najee Clayton and cornerback Juwan Dowels; in 2019, it was receiver Keith Mixon and defensive lineman Tim Collins; and in 2020, it was running back La'Darius Jefferson and safety Bricen Garner. Throughout Tim Lester's tenure, W MU has succeeded in bringing in instant-impact transfers, and this year, there are several candidates who could emerge. On offense, Bryce Nunnelly is the incoming transfer most likely to break out, after the 6-foot-2, 190-pound receiver combined to catch 136 passes for 2,031 yards and 12 touchdowns during his last two full seasons with Tennessee Chattanooga. He played in just one game during the Mocs' coronavirus-shortened spring season, so there might be a little bit of rust to shake off and an adjustm ent period with the move up to Football Bowl Subdivision competition, but Nunnelly fills a need and has a track record of production. - Kalamazoo Gazette

Bryce Nunnelly ran for 100 yards and caught a touchdown pass and Chattanooga coach Rusty Wright earned a win in his debut as the Mocs beat Eastern Illinois 24-10 in a season opener on Thursday night. Nick Tiano accounted for two touchdowns and 17-of-27 p assing for 256 yards but threw a pair of interceptions for the Mocs. Ailym Ford added 50 yards rushing and a touchdown. Johnathan Brantley threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Nick Stricker late in the second quarter for the Panthers' only touchdown.T iano bulled into the end zone from the 1 in the first quarter and tossed a 59-yard touchdown pass to Nunnelly as the Mocs built a 17-10 halftime lead. Ford added a 1-yard scoring run early in the third quarter. The Panthers punted twice, failed to conver t on fourth down and committed two turnovers in the fourth quarter.
