Marshall offensive lineman Billy Ross confirmed on Tuesday night he has chosen to give up football for personal reasons. "I can assure you that I'm going to hang them up," Ross said. "There's no way that I would sit this year out and enter the portal aga in. I'm done playing football." Ross said seeing an end to his football career - a game he's played since he was a little boy - was bittersweet. "It comes to an end at some point," Ross said. "I played for so long. It's definitely tough in that aspect, b ut there's also a time that it hits and you know [you're done] and it makes it easier. It's not all that bad for me." The 2021 season was slated to be Ross' return to the field after nearly two years. Ross entered the transfer portal in fall 2020 while a t North Carolina and committed to the Thundering Herd and former offensive line coach Greg Adkins soon after. Ross then came to Marshall this summer after finishing his degree at North Carolina in the spring. The 6-foot-6, 294-pound local product was exp ected to start at either guard or tackle for the Herd in the 2021 season opener Sept. 4 at Navy. - Charleston Gazette

Billy Ross has seen his college football career officially come full circle. As it stands, the first school to offer him out of Huntington High School will be the final place he plays in the college ranks. Ross, who completed his degree at North Carolina , has joined Marshall's program as a graduate transfer who can have immediate impact for the Thundering Herd's offensive line. For Ross, there was never any question of him playing for Marshall. It was just a matter of when. "Even when I was at North Car olina, I always rooted for Marshall to win their games," Ross said. "I knew when it came down to it, when I made my decision [to transfer], I'd end up back here." Just how serious was Ross about a return to Huntington to play for his hometown team? "Ther e was no question," Ross said. "I didn't even talk to any other coaches when I hit the portal. It was only Marshall." During the 2020 season, Ross committed to Marshall, which was coached by Doc Holliday at the time. - Charleston Gazette
