LaKendrick Van Zandt, Texas Christian, Player News

Van Zandt was a big-play guy in 2020. He recorded both of his interceptions in the first two games the Frogs won on the season. He created momentum when there was none, and TCU used his interceptions as momentum shifters in victories over Baylor and a ranked Texas team. TCU is losing its two best safeties to the 2020 NFL draft, and Van Zandt might be the perfect guy to step into one of the roles. He showed he at least deserves a look based on the opportunities he received last season. - Dallas Morning News

OCT 5 BIG 12 CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: La'Kendrick Van Zandt, S, Jr., TCU,...Van Zandt led TCU with a career-high seven tackles, an interception and one tackle for loss in the Horned Frogs' upset road win at Texas. He recorded a game-saving tackle as Texas was driving the field in the waning moments, as he caught a player from behind before heading to the end zone. - Big 12 Football

La'Kendrick Van Zandt has now had an interception in both games this season. Sam Ehlinger threw an interception to Van Zandt who returned the ball for 37 yards to the UT 5. Of course, the Frogs had a penalty on the play. Unsportsmanlike conduct from Van Zandt after the play resulted in TCU getting pushed back to the UT 10. He also had multiple big tackles throughout the game including on the Longhorns final drive when he tackled Keaontay Ingram on the TCU 1, followed by Garrett Wallow forcing the fumble on the next play. - Dallas Morning News

It may be hard for Van Zandt to make a name for himself, considering he's playing safety alongside stars Ar'Darius Washington and Trevon Moehrig. But Van Zandt, who also played linebacker as a sophomore before missing the last few games with an injury, is a tremendous athlete. At 6-1, 206 pounds, he's a bigger presence at safety than most. If offenses try to throw away from Moehrig and Washington, Van Zandt will be there to either pick off the pass or lay the wood on a receiver. Expect to hear his name called often next year. - Dallas Morning News
