Blake Shapen threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns in his first start for ninth-ranked Baylor, and the Bears held on for a 27-24 win over Texas Tech on Saturday that kept alive their hopes of making the Big 12 championship game for the second time in th ree seasons. Abram Smith ran for 117 yards and a touchdown for the Bears (10-2, 7-2 Big 12, CFP No. 8), who had to wait for the outcome of Saturday night’s game between No. 7 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Oklahoma. The Cowboys were already locked into thei r first Big 12 title game, and a win over the Sooners in Bedlam would put Baylor in next Saturday’s game with them.Shapen hit Trestan Ebner in stride down near the 25 for a 61-yard catch-and-run score on the game’s opening drive that put Baylo r ahead to stay. Shapen had a decisive 9-yard TD pass to tight end Ben Sims with 7 minutes left to immediately respond to a Tech score. The Red Raiders (6-6, 3-6) still had one more chance after stopping Baylor on fourth down on its 12 with 1:18 and no t imeouts left. They got in position for a 53-yard field goal attempt by Jonathan Garibay, who had plenty of leg but pushed the kick wide left on the final play. Garibay had a game-ending 62-yarder to beat Iowa State two week earlier. Donovan Smith threw f or 243 yards and had two TD passes for the Red Raiders, who a week earlier had only 108 total yards in a 23-0 loss to Oklahoma State in their home finale. That was the first time Tech was shut out in a 303-game span since 1997. - Baylor/AP College Footba ll

Baylor tight end Ben Sims had a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter before Abram Smith spun away for a 32-yard scamper to the end zone in a 31-24 win Saturday, when the 16th-ranked Bears became the third team in a row to overcome a double-digit deficit t o beat Texas. The handoff to the sweeping Sims for a score with 12:48 left put the Bears (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) back ahead for the first time since the first quarter. Texas then had a failed fake punt attempt, setting up Smith's nifty run three plays later wh en he took a quick pitch left, reversed field after spinning away from a defender and ran all the way to the end zone.Texas (4-4, 2-3) was coming off its open date, which followed consecutive losses to No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 15 Oklahoma State in w hich the Longhorns led by at least two touchdowns before halftime both times. Big 12 rushing leader Bijan Robinson was limited to 43 yards on 17 carries, well below his 132 yards a game average with a 2.5 yard-per-carry that was the lowest in his career. But he did put the Longhorns up 21-10 with his 1-yard TD run on fourth down early in the second half when he followed a pair of blocking nose tackles with a combined weight of 643 yards into the end zone. Smith finished with 113 yards on 20 carries. Ger ry Bohanon threw for 222 yards with two interceptions, after only one pick the first six games, and had a 6-yard TD run in the third quarter. - Baylor/AP College Football

Baylor had three interceptions, Abram Smith rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and the Bears defeated the Texas State Bobcats 29-20 on Saturday. Baylor played its first regular season game outside the Big 12 in 715 days after its 2020 non-conferenc e games were canceled due to COVID-19-related issues. "For them to have something to feel good about, it's been a while," Bears coach Dave Aranda said. Baylor finished 2-7 last season, losing five straight after winning its season opener against Kansas o n Sept. 26, 2020.The Bears are unbeaten in eight games against the Bobcats dating back to 1909, but it was a stiffer test after having outscored Texas State 279-73 in their previous meetings. Trestan Ebner added 120 yards rushing on 20 carries, gi ving the Bears their first pair of 100-yard rushers in the same game since 2018. "(What) I am proud of is I thought our identity on offense, you got a feel for what we are trying to accomplish," Aranda said. The grit of the running game was matched by th e team's intensity defensively. "That was one of the better defenses I've seen in a long time," Bobcats coach Jake Spavital said. Baylor returns 10 starters on defense and that unit responded by holding Texas State to 235 yards, including 79 yards rushin g. The Bears' defense scored nine points, including a safety to end the game. - Baylor/AP College Football
