Thayer Munford, Ohio State, Player News
|
Thayer Munford has no regrets. Not to return for an extra season at Ohio State in 2021. Not his switch from left tackle to left guard his final season. "None at all," Munford said Thursday at the NFL combine. When the NCAA granted an additional year of e ligibility to players following the COVID-affected 2020 season, Munford chose to take advantage of it, surprising many by not entering the NFL draft after three years of starting at left tackle. He wanted to finish his degree, which he did. When Dawand J ones began to emerge at right tackle, Munford volunteered to move to guard, with Nicholas Petit-Frere moving from right tackle to left tackle. It was a selfless move, and that's something he hopes will appeal to NFL teams. "I'm a team player," Munford sa id. "I pride myself on that. I don't care where they put me. I just want to do what's best for the team." Munford's stock might have been higher if he'd entered last year's draft. He had recovered from back surgery to play superbly in 2020. "I had a phen omenal year," Munford said. "I had no sacks (allowed), no pressures." - Columbus Dispatch

Offensive lineman Thayer Munford has earned the Block O jersey honor for Ohio State this year, though he won't wear No. 0 because of uniform number rules. The Buckeyes established the Block O uniform tradition last year. Defensive end Jonathon Cooper was the first recipient and proudly wore No. 0 as his uniform number. The award is a tribute to Buckeye legend Bill Willis for his toughness, accountability and character.Munford, who wears No. 75, can't wear No. 0 because offensive linemen must wear jerseys with numbers 50-79. Munford will instead wear a special patch that will read, "Block 0 Recipient." "It's a blessing to be out here," Munford said after practice Saturday, according to an OSU news release. "I love this team and will do everything I can to uphold the tradition of what the Block O means in our program." Munford will be a four-year starter in 2021. He turned down a chance to enter the NFL draft to return for the extra year of eligibility offered by the NCAA because of COVID-19. At the time, he said he did it primarily to finish his degree, which the sport industry major earned in June. "The Block O is a badge of honor in our program," coach Ryan Day said. "It represents everything that is important to us - fighting to be elite in all that we do. It's also about accountability and a blue-collar personality. When I think of Thayer Munford, that's what comes to mind." - Columbus Dispatch

Paris Johnson assumed Ohio State football would have an opening at left tackle by his sophomore season. After the national championship game, the Buckeyes' starting left tackle, Thayer Munford, confided in Johnson that he might not be ready to vacate his post. The NCAA decided no fall athletes would accrue eligibility last season. Munford could put off the NFL Draft and come back for a "Super Senior" season. Johnson - widely complimented on his maturity since his days as one of the nation's top high sch ool recruits - had to process his personal goals against Munford's. He said Munford knew what Johnson's expectations were and "kept it real" regarding his own thinking."At the end of the day, the most important thing is ... him getting his degree, and then being able to go the highest that you can when you leave this place - to maximize that opportunity," Johnson said. "I told him just to pray on it and go where he felt peace, and then that should be the decision. He said he felt peaceful coming back. So I told him you shouldn't go against that feeling, so I was all for it." Johnson has been playing guard extensively this spring and now projects as the starter on the right side next to tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere, who he has bonded with. - Cleve land Plain Dealer
