Rutgers coach Greg Schiano started Saturday without his top three linebackers. Six turnovers and a a nifty trick play later, the Scarlet Knights celebrated a possible program-changing victory. Isaih Pacheco scored twice in the first quarter and Rutgers s cored 17 points off turnovers, routing Indiana 38-3 to move within one win of becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2014. "I'm excited, our guys are fighting," Schiano said. "We want to write that story at the end of the year and now we have a chance. We'll see what we can do." For the Scarlet Knights (5-5, 2-5 Big Ten), this wasn't just another win.It was their most lopsided victory in conference play since joining the Big Ten - easily surpassing the previous mark of 22 points against Indiana in 2015. Now comes the hard part - beating either No. 23 Penn State or Maryland to finish the job. Three games into the season, Rutgers found its big-play offense. Noah Vedral threw for two touchdowns and Isaih Pacheco ran for two more as the Scarlet Knights defeated Delaware 45-13 Saturday for its first 3-0 start since 2012. Vedral found Bo Melton on a 28-yard touchdown pass on his opening possession. He hit Brandon Sanders on a 62-yarder for the other TD in helping the Scarlet Knights take 35-10 half lead over their FCS opponent.Vedral said offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson pushed the group in practice. "It's the little things; the little things," said Vedral, who was 21 of 25 for 323 yards. "We were close here and we were close there, kind of keeping us from kind of reaching this explosive potential that we always felt we had. So really b ig day for us to kind of put the pieces together and to see it come together on the field." The statistics were impressive. Rutgers had a season-high 497 yards in total offense and didn't turn the ball over for the third straight game. "I think any time you perform efficiently like that, that would help anybody's confidence," coach Greg Schiano said of Vedral. "Noah doesn't lack for confidence, though. He's a very confident guy because he prepares so well." Pacheco tallied on runs of 20 and 7 yards, whi le Aaron Young plowed into the end zone from 6 yards out for the Big Ten Conference team. Isaih Pacheco had no idea about Rutgers' recent history of producing 1,000-yard rushers. But the Scarlet Knights senior running back set the goal anyway. "Absolutely, it's one of my goals because I had 1,000 yards when I was in high school," Pacheco said following Friday's training-camp practice. "But that was as a quarterback. Now I'm looking at the running back standard." Still, Pacheco was unaware of just how rare of a feat it's been at Rutgers over the past decade. No Rutgers player has cracked the 1,000-yard rushing plateau since Jawan Jamison tallied 1,075 yards in 2012. "It is kind of hard to believe," Pacheco said. "I didn't do my research on it because I just put my head down and work. But that's my goal, and I know that I'm going to get it be cause how hard I've been working." Since 2013, only 10 of the current 130 FBS college football teams haven't had a player rush for 1,000 yards in a season, an NJ Advance Media statistical analysis revealed.Joining Rutgers on the list are Akron, Du ke, FIU, Kent State, Miami-Ohio, Purdue, Syracuse, UMass and Washington State. Still, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano insists that's not how he'll ultimately judge Pacheco's success this season. "He can have a great year and not rush for 1,000 yards and he ca n have a not-so-great year and rush for 1,000 yards. I don't know if that's the gold standard," he said. "I want to see him do what he's capable of doing. I thought at times last year he did. And other times not as much. "And some of it wasn't directly h is fault. We have to do a good job up front, and he has to trust the plays and be patient with the plays. And when he does that I think he's a really big-time running back. Strong, explosive, fast, tough - (he) has all the tools. And I know our whole sta ff is looking for him to put it together on a consistent basis. We've all seen flashes. I'd like to see it on a consistent basis, because if he does he'll be as good as there is." - Star Ledger

There are two numbers to keep in mind when it comes to the Scarlet Knights' star running back: 1,000 and 461. The latter number is how many yards Pacheco needs to move into the top 10 of Rutgers' all-time rushing leaders. As for 1,000, keep in mind that no Rutgers running back has eclipsed the grand plateau since Jawan Jamison accomplished the feat in 2012. Pacheco, who enters his fourth year with 1,795 yards and 13 touchdowns, is looking to build on a campaign in which he ranked eighth in the Big Ten w ith 515 rushing yards. - Star Ledger

Isaih Pacheco is the first known Rutgers athlete to the name, image and likeness market. The star running back has signed an appearance deal with The Scarlet Spotlight podcast on Thursday, hours after the NCAA suspended amateurism rules that prevented at hletes from profiting with their NIL rights. Pacheco will appear on the podcast -- hosted by well-known Rutgers donor Jon Newman and former Rutgers broadcaster Danny Breslauer -- three times, Newman told NJ Advance Media. Pacheco will make his first appe arance on the podcast next week, then make two in-season appearances. Terms of Pacheco's agreement were not disclosed. Gianna Mancini, a member of the Scarlet Knights' field hockey team, has also reached an unspecified agreement with Barstool Sports. - S tar Ledger

Isaih Pacheco ran for two first-half touchdowns, and Rutgers snapped a 21-game Big Ten losing streak Saturday, beating Michigan State 38-27 in coach Greg Schiano's first game back with the Scarlet Knights. Michigan State has a new coach too, and Mel Tuck er's debut was forgettable from the start. The Spartans (0-1) turned the ball over seven times - four in the first half - and never led against a Rutgers team that hadn't won a conference game since Nov. 4, 2017 against Maryland. The Scarlet Knights scor ed 14 points total through their first five Big Ten games last year. It took them 8:03 to reach that mark Saturday. Pacheco strolled in from 12 yards out to cap the game's opening drive, then Michigan State receiver Jayden Reed fumbled the ball away on h is team's first offensive play.Rutgers (1-0) didn't capitalize on that turnover, but the Scarlet Knights quickly forced another. Rocky Lombardi was sacked and fumbled, giving Rutgers the ball at the Michigan State 1. A touchdown run by Johnny Lang an made it 14-0. Reed scored on a 50-yard catch-and-run on fourth down to make it 14-7, but the Spartans weren't done turning the ball over. An interception in Michigan State territory led to a 24-yard touchdown run by Rutgers quarterback Noah Vedral. Re ed's second fumble of the half gave the Scarlet Knights the ball again, but Vedral threw an interception.
