Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman is grateful to have Coby Bryant. The senior cornerback has developed into one of the most reliable and respected players for the undefeated 11th-ranked (AP/Coaches) Bearcats. Bryant is also one of the undeniable leaders of Freeman's defense, a unit that leads the American Athletic Conference in scoring defense and total defense, forcing eight turnovers through the first three games. "The best way to describe him is elite competitor," Freeman said. "It can be a fault sometimes because he hates to lose and be wrong sometimes. That's a great problem to have." Bryant sounds a lot like another athlete: Kobe Bryant. Coby was named after the late Hall of Fame basketball player. Coby says his parents gav e him the name because they were fans of the former Los Angels Lakers star, but they altered the spelling so that their son could carve out his own legacy. "I'm very grateful for my name," Bryant said. - Cincinnati Enquirer

Defensive Coordinator Marcus Freeman's group forced five turnovers, all of them coming by way of interception. Coby Bryant had two picks to lead the ball-hawking unit. The senior cornerback, named after the late Kobe Bryant, said he had that "Mamba Menta lity." "I definitely did," Bryant said. "I always have to carry that every week in me, and maybe I'll start getting more picks." Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner, nickelback Arquon Bush and linebacker Darrian Beavers each added another interception, as the Cincinna ti defense now has forced eight turnovers through the first three games. The Bearcats forced an AAC-best 25 turnovers last season. - Cincinnati Enquirer
