Cam Taylor-Britt, Nebraska, Player News
|
The surreal scene that played out as Nebraska defensive back Cam Taylor-Britt drifted back inside his own 5-yard line to first field a punt, and then try to throw it out of the end zone when he was about to be swarmed by Illinois' coverage team, doesn't mean the junior captain will be taken off punt return duty any time soon. Nebraska coach Scott Frost on Monday reiterated his confidence in Taylor-Britt while saying the Huskers as a whole need to make better decisions all over the field. "Cam Taylor is one of our best players; I love him like a son. He's a Blackshirt, he's a captain," Frost said. "(But) you can't try to make a play when you've been trained to do something else. And he'll learn from it." The play cost Nebraska two points, of course, and gave Illinois a first-quarter lead while sending Husker fans searching for the antacid. "We made one critical error on the punt return and did what we weren't trained to do and coached to do," Frost said. "There's critical moments when you've got to mak e a snap decision and a smart decision, and a decision that's best for your team, and there was a few times in that game when we didn't. And those mistakes really cost us." - Lincoln Journal Star

Taylor-Britt has ascended into a face-of-the-program type player and perhaps the best player on the roster. The second-team All-Big Ten cornerback in 2020 is NU's best candidate for All-America-type honors in some time. Offensive coordinator Matt Lubick put it simply in a video detailing Taylor-Britt's spring: "It's a challenge to complete a pass on that guy." - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt, arguably the Husker defense's best player, has decided to return for his senior season. The 6-foot, 215-pound Alabama native said Monday on Twitter, "After much thought and consideration...Let's take it back for one more ride Husker Nation." A second-team All-Big Ten selection by league coaches, Taylor-Britt recorded 28 tackles this season while making two interceptions and breaking up four passes. He was also the team's leading punt returner with six for 79 yards ( 13.2 per return). In 2019, Taylor-Britt ranked third nationally with four forced fumbles, the most by any Husker since 1999. - Lincoln Journal Star

Last week, Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said he thought teams had been mostly staying away from throwing the ball toward junior cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt. On Saturday against Purdue, Taylor-Britt added another play to his highlight ree l, rising high in one-on-one coverage against star sophomore receiver David Bell down the sideline to knock a pass away. It looked a lot like a similar play he made against the similarly talented Jahan Dotson of Penn State earlier this fall. Taylor-Britt , a Montgomery, Alabama, native, also was involved in Purdue's biggest play of the game when he and senior Marquel Dismuke collided while trying to play a deep attempt for Bell that turned into an 89-yard touchdown. And sure, he dropped an interception i n the fourth quarter, too. But coaches and teammates alike say Taylor-Britt is playing at a high level on the edge for the Huskers."Cam is playing at an elite level," senior cornerback Dicaprio Bootle said Monday. "He's a heavy competitor. Somebod y who, no matter what it is, we could be flipping a coin and he's going to want to get in on that coin flip and be able to call whether it's heads or tails. That's just a testament to the guy that he is. "He's took this year and took the time off to real ly help himself grow as a player. I always thought the highest of Cam and thought he was a great player, regardless of if he might have had some miscues in prior years. Who doesn't? But that guy right there, as somebody that's younger than me, I really a dmire his work and I really admire the things that he does on the field and just the player that he's evolved into over his time here. "Down the line, if he continues to do what he's doing, it'll pay off for him big time." - Lincoln Journal Star
