UCLA defensive back Quentin Lake missed most of spring camp but is back healthy to start for summer. Lake was dealing with a minor leg injury that kept him out of the spring showcase and the practices leading up to it. "For me, it was like a business dec ision," Lake said. "I didn't want to go out there and hurt myself even more." The redshirt senior made the most of the opportunity by providing guidance and advice to some of the younger players on the roster. Lake has missed time during previous UCLA se asons to deal with his health. He missed eight games in the 2019 season with a wrist injury, returning in time to play in the season finale against Cal. He worked his way back from the injury practicing with a huge wrap on his right hand, with the end ba lled into a club.He was also among the players who missed games last season due to COVID-19 safety protocols. Lake will help lead an experienced secondary after taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted to all players as a result o f the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. "It feels great to be back to how things felt two years ago," Lake said. "Obviously there's still some policies and regulations we have to follow, but it pretty much feels like things are back to normal." - Los Angel es Times

Lake hardly looked like someone who had been forced to sit in a room the previous two weeks as a result of contact-tracing protocols related to COVID-19, missing games against Oregon and Arizona. His return was all the more special because Carnell was al lowed to attend the game at Sun Devil Stadium as part of a contingent of family members permitted access. Father and son celebrated the next day by watching more game footage, including some involving the Trojans. "He gave me some tips and some pointers for them because he's a resource I want to use," Quentin said. "He's played at UCLA, played in the league, so it's critical to get some advice from him."Quentin is part of a resurgent Bruins defense that leads the Pac-12 Conference with 18 sacks a nd is giving up 229.4 yards passing per game, less than half of the school-record 515 it yielded to Slovis last season. UCLA hasn't faced a passing attack as potent as the Trojans' but won't cower in its cleats Saturday. "It's a challenge," Lake said, "b ut it's not a challenge that we can't overcome." - Los Angeles Times

After playing the first three games of last season before suffering an injury only to return in UCLA's season finale against Cal, senior Quentin Lake, son of former UCLA All-American Carnell Lake, is a highly anticipated top returner in the secondary. In 2018, as a sophomore and the Bruins' starter at strong safety, Lake finished third on the team with 67 total tackles. - Orange County Register
