Tyler Linderbaum's approach to the NFL Draft isn't much different from his approach at Iowa. "The biggest thing for me is being myself," Linderbaum said Thursday at the NFL Combine. "I'm not trying to change who I am once I get here. I'm here for a reason, and that's just because I've been being myself." Even after suffering a mid-foot sprain that will keep him out of the combine drills, he wouldn't change his decision to play in the Citrus Bowl. "I'd play in that game if I could," Linderbaum said. "Hopefully go out and win." Linderbaum had the same even-keel demeanor in his media availability as he had throughout the season. He's doing the work in the same place he's been for four years. While many draft prospects spend their pre-draft months with trainers in places like Texas or Florida, Linderbaum has been preparing at Iowa's football facility. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Linderbaum said. Linderbaum said strength and conditioning coach Raimond Braithwaite has "a lot of great knowledge," and Braithwaite's staff has not made any significant changes from what he was already doing. - The Gazette

Linderbaum is widely considered the top center in this year's draft class. While relatively small at 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds, his lateral quickness and technique have helped his draft stock. He won't be worrying too much about whether he'll be a top-10 pick. "I'll let all the coaches and GMs and all those guys decide if they think I'm a top-10 player in the draft," Linderbaum said. Linderbaum also doesn't have to worry about it too much when NFL general managers think as highly as they do of the former Solon prep. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta described Linderbaum as the "type of guy that could really be the centerpiece of your offensive line" and compared him to Yanda. "When we look at a guy like Tyler Linderbaum, we see a lot of the same qualities," DeCosta said Wednesday. "Tough. Gritty. Very, very athletic. Very, very intelligent. Smart." Linderbaum already has met formally with several NFL teams, including the Packers, Giants, Jets, Dolphins, Bears and Bengals. - The Gazette

Linderbaum was one of three Rimington Trophy finalists last season as college football's most dominant center. He easily could've turned pro; a mid-second-round pick (which he was projected to be) is in line for a four-year rookie contract worth between $6 million and $7 million. But instead of assuredly hearing his name called in the NFL Draft (which begins Thursday), Linderbaum was content to be leading the Hawkeyes' offensive line into another season. "I wasn't interested," Linderbaum flatly said Tuesday.

The Solon native was so confident in returning to Iowa City that he didn't even request feedback from the College Advisory Committee, a service that helps draft-eligible underclassmen know where they stand in the eyes of NFL executives and scouts. "I wanted to compete with my buddies," Linderbaum said. "There's a lot more to do, a lot more to improve on...I was coming back for sure." As you can tell, Linderbaum wasn't wild about delving too deeply into this subject. He seemed more focused on stiff-arming media attention that will continue to come his way. "A big thing for me is just to focus on the program and my teammates," Linderbaum said. "I really am not interested in what's going around outside, what media are saying, what other people are saying." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Tyler Linderbaum isn't done playing college football. The sophomore center from Solon announced Thursday afternoon via Twitter that he will return to the University of Iowa for at least one more season. Linderbaum has started 21 consecutive games for Iowa and has been named to various all-American teams in the past couple of weeks. "The 2020 season was both challenging and incredibly rewarding," Linderbaum said. "I had the best time playing football with great teammates and coaches who are invested in making me a better football player and a better person. The chance to play football in the NFL is a dream of mine, but I am not done being an Iowa Hawkeye. "There are only a few years I can play college football, and I believe there is more to do and more to learn. I look forward to continuing to work with my teammates and coaches to reach my potential in 2021." - The Gazette

Linderbaum was asked this week how much he has thought about the NFL, and if he'll have a decision to make after this season, as far as considering entering the draft. He brushed off that talk rapidly. "My focus is on this season," he said. "To me, I still have a lot of improvement I need to make, and I'm just focused on that: what I need to get better at. I see a lot of things that I can get better at. There's a lot in the run game and the pass game. Just like anything else, I think I can improve a lot in the pass game, with my feet and hands. Just being better overall." "(The center) has got a tough job because he's got to get the ball to the quarterback ... then also block. I've always thought he had the toughest job out there on the field, and there are certain blocks in our offense that aren't easy to execute," Kirk Ferentz said. "So if you get a guy that has got that ability, it's a really good thing. At the end of the day, centers are the MVPs. Quarterbacks think they are big shots, but if they don't get the ball, they are going nowhere." - The Gazette
