Connor Sampson threw for three touchdowns and Western Illinois rallied in the second half to beat Illinois State 38-31 on Saturday and snap a four-game losing streak. Trailing 28-13, the Leathernecks (2-7, 2-4) scored two touchdowns in the final 2:36 of the third quarter then Sampson put them ahead with a 6-yard TD throw to Dennis Houston for a 35-28 lead with 10 1/2 minutes remaining in the game. Houston also recovered a teammate's fumble deep in Illinois State territory with about two minutes left tha t led to Mason Laramie's third field goal. A minute after Sampson threw a 20-yard TD pass to Jack Whyte to get within 28-20, Michael Lawson scooped up a a fumble and returned it 41 yards for a WIU score. Sampson was 27 of 39 for 298 yards passing. Cole M ueller rushed for 159 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns for the Redbirds (3-5, 1-4), WIU snapped a three-game losing streak to the Redbirds, who came in with 10 victories in the rivals' last 11 meetings. - Western Illinois/AP College Football

SEPT 27 MISSOURI VALLEY NOTABLE PERFORMANCE: QB Connor Sampson, Western Illinois - Connor continued his stellar season play in the MVFC opener on Saturday (Sept. 25) at Youngstown State. The quarterback threw 33-48 (68.8%) for 316 yards, four passing tou chdowns, and one interception. His 33 completions rank fourth-best in program history for a single game; a mark he first totaled last season at North Dakota (3/13/21). His four passing touchdowns tied as a personal career-high, matching his mark from las t week versus Eastern Washington (Sept. 18). - Missouri Valley Conference Football

Connor Sampson threw four touchdown passes and Mason Laramie kicked a 20-yard field goal as time expired to cap a rally from a 28-point deficit and Western Illinois stunned Youngstown State 38-35 in a Missouri Valley Conference opener on Saturday night. Not only did the Leathernecks (1-3) hold the Penguins (1-2) scoreless in the second half, WIU stopped a fourth-and-1 attempt by Youngstown State at the Penguins' 36-yard line with 1:49 remaining. The Leathernecks then drove inside the 10 and called timeo ut for Laramie's kick. Youngstown State dominated the first half, building a 35-7 lead before a late WIU touchdown made it 35-14 at the break.Jaleel McLaughlin, who finished with 136 yards rushing, scored three touchdowns and quarterback Demeatric Crenshaw added two more in the first half for the Penguins. Crenshaw had 134 rushing yards but just 76 yards passing with an interception. Western Illinois scored 21 points in the third quarter. Sampson, who threw TD passes for both of WIU's first-half touchdowns, added two more in the third quarter, the latter a 7-yard pass to Dennis Houston to tie the score heading into the fourth. SEPT 20 MISSOURI VALLEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: QB Connor Sampson, Western Illinois, 6-3, 215, Sr. Belleville, Mich. (Belleville High),...Saturday was a career day for Sampson, who led Western Illinois to a heroic comeback attempt against No. 6 Eas tern Washington. In the 62-56 loss, Sampson set a career high in single-game passing yards - going 31-of-46 for 425 yards. It currently ranks as the fifth-highest spot in the program's single-game records. His previous single-game best was 368 yards vs. South Dakota on Nov. 2, 2019. He also threw for a career-high four touchdowns.
