Reggie Roberson Jr., Southern Methodist, Player News

SMU senior wide receiver Reggie Roberson Jr. couldn't help but offer a slight grin when the question came his way. Do you understand the plan … or do you want to let it loose a little bit more? The grin said the answer before his words did. "For me, I just want to get out there and get those reps because I've been away from the game for so long," said Roberson, who continues to wear a No. 21 red non-contact jersey during fall camp. "But at the same time I've got to understand to just trust the coaching staff and what they have going on with me. Just sit back, take those mental reps and get my body ready."

Easing Roberson into full-go this fall makes sense, considering the way the last two seasons ended for him. In 2019, Roberson had a foot injury that sidelined for him the last five games of the season. Last year, he suffered a season-ending knee injury on Oct. 3 that required surgery. Roberson, a Mesquite Horn alum and former West Virginia transfer, was one of a few SMU players that decided to take advantage of the extra year of eligibility created because of the pandemic. And with one year left on the Hilltop, availability might be his most important ability before he heads to the NFL draft. "Basically like a pitcher, we're putting him on a pitch count and just gradually building him up," said offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Garrett Riley. "But great mentality. Dude's a pro and he attacks it every day and I can't wait to see him out there." - Dallas Morning News

SMU wide receiver Reggie Roberson Jr. announced via Twitter on Monday that he will come back for a final season with the Mustangs. Roberson has been one of SMU's most explosive players during his tenure but has been sidelined by two season-ending injuries the past two years. Roberson likely would have been an NFL draft prospect this offseason if not for a season-ending knee injury he suffered in the third quarter of the Mustangs' Oct. 3 game against Memphis. Similarly, he went down with a season-ending foot injury the previous October. It's unclear where Roberson is in his recovery and if he would have been able to participate in any of the pre-draft showcase events. The transfer from West Virginia has broken out in his three years with SMU, hauling in 2,079 yards in 22 games. He's averaging 17.8 yards per catch during his career. In that game against Memphis, he had 243 receiving yards on just five receptions. - Dallas Morning News

SMU will not have wide receiver Reggie Roberson Jr. and running back TJ McDaniel for the rest of the season, head coach Sonny Dykes confirmed during his media availability Monday. Both Roberson Jr. and McDaniel will have surgery, Dykes said. Roberson appeared to injure his left knee during the third quarter of SMU’s 30-27 win over Memphis on Oct. 3. McDaniel appeared to suffer a lower-leg injury on the first play of that game. Both players were starters and huge pieces for the Mustangs. It is the second straight season-ending injury for Roberson Jr., who missed the final six games with a foot injury last year. Roberson Jr. had 22 receptions for 474 yards and five touchdowns thus far in 2020. McDaniel, in his first season as a starter with a real chance to prove himself, was having a strong start to the campaign. He had 303 yards on the ground with his 60 carries and a touchdown. An NFL prospect, Roberson Jr. still has eligibility remaining for next season, should he choose to come back. It’s unclear what his timeline for a return is and if he’d be healthy enough to participate in pre-draft workouts. - The Dallas Morning News

Roberson Jr. left in the third quarter of Saturday's game after suffering a non-contact injury to his left knee. Roberson Jr. is SMU's most dynamic receiver. That was evidenced by his 243-yard performance on Saturday before the injury. This will leave the Mustangs needing players like Rashee Rice and Danny Gray - receivers that both struggled on Saturday - to step up in his absence. Roberson Jr. is regarded as an NFL prospect, and probably could have entered the draft after last season. It is unclear how long he will be sidelined, or if this injury will impact his decision to return to SMU, or enter the draft.

This could potentially be the second-straight season-ending injury for Roberson Jr. He missed the final six games of the 2019 campaign after suffering a foot injury in the first quarter of the Mustangs' win over Houston in October. Roberson Jr. left West Virginia after his freshman season in 2017. He has 2,079 receiving yards at SMU, including 474 this season. He has 17 total touchdowns, including five this season. He was averaging 21.5 yards per catch before the injury. - Dallas Morning News

Reggie Roberson Jr. became the first SMU receiver to total more than 200 yards receiving in a game, catching five balls for 243 in a 30-27 win over Memphis. The senior is among five receivers in the nation since 2015 to go over 200 yards on so few catches. Highlighting his day were touchdowns of 85 and 70 yards. The man throwing to Roberson was Shane Buechele, who passed for a career-high 474 yards and three TDs and had a career-high 501 yards of total offense. Roberson's other 200-yard receiving game was last season, when he had 250 against Arkansas State. - AP College Football

Reggie Roberson Jr. had quite literally just made another spectacular leaping catch. He came down, tried to get the defender to miss. Then, seemingly without contact, he crumple to the ground. SMU’s top receiver was tended to by trainers. Then he came out of the game, being assisted off the field. Roberson was having his best game of the season, and arguably his best game in an SMU uniform. He had 243 yards in the air, including a 70-yard and 80-yard touchdown. He probably would have had more on that catch, had he not been hurt. - Dallas Morning News

Roberson Jr. was arguably the best WR the team had through the first seven games of last season. In his final full game, he had eight catches for 250 yards and three touchdowns against Temple. He had 803 receiving yards in seven-plus games. Roberson Jr. probably could have been in the NFL right now if he had chosen to do so. Instead, he'll come back for another year with the Mustangs and his foot injury healed. - Dallas Morning News

SMU receiver Reggie Roberson Jr., who has averaged 100.4 yards receiving per game, is still dealing with a foot injury sustained Oct. 24 at Houston. Even without Roberson, the Mustangs had two 100-yard receivers in the same game for the first time this season at Memphis: AAC receptions leader James Proche (13 catches for 149 yards) and freshman Rashee Rice (seven catches for 122 yards). Proche's 34 career TD catches are tied with Emmanuel Sanders for the school record. - AP College Football

SMU's improbable season remains perfect thanks to an aerial game that eliminated some of the high anxiety last seen when the Mustangs took the field. Shane Buechele set career highs with six touchdown passes and 457 passing yards as No. 19 SMU improved to 7-0 with a 45-21 win over Temple on Saturday. Reggie Roberson Jr. had a career-high 250 receiving yards on eight catches, including touchdowns of 75, 60 and 33 yards. The 33-yard score saw Buechele lead Roberson into the left corner of the end zone in tight coverage. On the two longer connections, Roberson got behind the secondary in the middle of the field with room to spare.

"We thought coming into the game we had some favorable matchups with some of our skill guys, and we had to execute," SMU coach Sonny Dykes said. "Shane obviously made some really great deep throws, and Reggie made some plays." "Our team does a really good job at taking it week by week and going 1-0," Buechele said. "It's always a goal to win, but to win that week -- not just the whole season." The Mustangs have opened the season with seven straight wins for the first time since 1982, when they were 10-0-0 en route to an 11-0-1 finish. The seven-game winning streak is their longest since winning eight straight during the 1984-85 seasons and matches their win total of the previous two years. SMU (3-0 American) remains in first place in the West Division. Dykes called it "certainly the most complete game I think we've played up to this point." - SMU/AP College Football
