C.J. Verdell watched on TV last week as Minnesota's Mohamed Ibrahim shredded Ohio State's disheveled defense early. The Oregon running back thought he could take advantage in the same fashion. Verdell, who has struggled with injuries the past two seasons, made it happen. He ran for 161 yards and scored three touchdowns as short-handed No. 12 Oregon stunned No. 3 Ohio State 35-28. Verdell and quarterback Anthony Brown exploited holes in Ohio State's defense and handed the Buckeyes their first regular-season loss in nearly three years and the first of third-year coach Ryan Day's tenure.   C.J. Verdell watched on TV last week as Minnesota's Mohamed Ibrahim shredded Ohio State's disheveled defense early. The Oregon running back thought he could take advantage in the same fashion. Verdell, who has struggled with injuries the past two seasons, made it happen. He ran for 161 yards and scored three touchdowns as shorthanded No. 12 Oregon stunned No. 3 Ohio State 35-28 on Saturday. "We saw the Minnesota running back was having a good game, and we wanted to do the same thing," the 5-foot-8, 211-pound Verdell said.

Verdell and quarterback Anthony Brown exploited holes in Ohio State's defense and handed the Buckeyes their first regular-season loss in nearly three years and the first of third-year coach Ryan Day's tenure. The Buckeyes' last loss in the regular season came at Purdue in October 2018 under Urban Meyer. Ohio State (1-1, 1-0 Big Ten) never led the game it was favored to win by 14 1/2 points despite gaudy numbers from freshman quarterback C.J. Stroud. Its front seven struggled to contain Verdell, control the edge and get after Brown in front. "They quickly adapted and just played with grit and toughness, knowing this was going to be a slugfest," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. - Oregon/AP College Football

CJ Verdell and Travis Dye are among the 86 players, including 12 from the Pac-12, on the preseason Doak Walker Award candidates list. Oregon's dynamic running back duo was not on the initial watch list released Wednesday morning due to a miscommunication during the nomination process but both were quickly added once the omission was discovered. The Doak Walker Award is given to the nation's top college running back. This is the third nomination for Verdell and the first for Dye. "The goal for us right now is we want to win a national championship really bad," Dye said during spring practice. "Becoming the best one-two punch in the (Pac-12), that's going to help us. Obviously, I believe we are the best one-two punch in the Pac, if not the nation. "Of course we're going to say that, but we're going to show it this year for sure." Entering his fourth season as Oregon's coach, Mario Cristobal is thrilled to have the familiar comfort blankets standing behind new starting quarterback Anthony Brown. Dye and Verdell have combined for 4,063 rushing yards and 34 total touchdowns over the past three seasons. - Register-Guard

Two of Oregon's best offensive weapons are in the backfield. CJ Verdell and Travis Dye give the Ducks one of, if not the best running back duos in the Pac-12 and one of the better tandems in the country. The emergence of Sean Dollars late last season makes the group even more diversified in terms of skills. Verdell missed the last two games of the season with a left thumb injury that hampered him even earlier than that. It was the first games Verdell missed in his career and he enters what will be his fifth-year junior season will facing questions about health. Oregon tried to lesson the load on Verdell the past few springs, with last year's practices cut short before full contact any way. It's been over five months since he was at 100% on a field though. - The Oregonian

CJ Verdell is far and away the conference's leading returning rusher and coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Verdell has proven himself to be the bell cow for Oregon each of the last two years. He's versatile, a great pass protector and runs hard downhill. The one lingering question remains Verdell's durability. When he can stay on the field, he's one of the best running backs in all of college football. But for two straight years he's had to leave numerous games due to an array of minor injuries. Having said that, Verdell is still tough as nails as none of those ailments has caused him to miss a game entirely. - The Oregonian

Gov. Kate Brown is ready for some football. Or at least for Oregon players and other athletes to begin preparing for the possibility of having a 2020 football season. During a news conference on Wednesday, Brown - who ordered the campus to remain closed through the remainder of the spring quarter, which ends June 12 - said Oregon athletes will be allowed to return to campus later this month. Last week, the Pac-12 announced that voluntary workouts for athletes at its member schools could begin on June 15. "I'm happy to say that our collegiate athletes will return to train by mid-June under specific health protocols to keep them safe and healthy and the staff healthy as well," Brown said. Coach Mario Cristobal said June 15 is the target date for some of his players to return. Oregon basketball coaches Dana Altman and Kelly Graves are targeting July to get their teams back together. Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said all returning athletes in the conference will be tested for COVID-19 and for antibodies for the virus. - Register Guard

CJ Verdell ran for 208 yards and broke open the game with two long touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, and No. 13 Oregon spoiled No. 5 Utah's playoff hopes with a 37-15 victory in the Pac-12 championship game Friday night. The Utes (11-2, No. 5 CFP) came into the game hoping to make a case for one of the four playoff spots with a conference title but instead got overmatched by Oregon (11-2, No. 13 CFP) and lost their second straight Pac-12 championship game. They fell into a 20-0 hole in the first half and then gave up a 70-yard TD run to Verdell after cutting the deficit to 23-15, paving the way for the winner of the Big 12 title game between Oklahoma and Baylor to get into the playoff as long as No. 1 LSU beats No. 4 Georgia for the SEC championship.

The Utes got back onto the game with two TD passes by Tyler Huntley in the third quarter. He connected with Zack Moss on a 24-yard play on the opening drive of the half to cut it to 20-7 and then threw a 25-yarder to Samson Nacua late in the third quarter to make it 23-15 following a 2-point conversion. The Utes then drove into Oregon territory before Huntley was sacked by Keyvon Thibodeaux on second down. Utah ended up punting on fourth-and-4 from the Oregon 40 after being stopped on three fourth downs earlier in the game. Verdell struck with his big run five plays later and added a 31-yard score later in the fourth against the nation's top-ranked run defense to put the game out of reach. - AP College Football

  10/30/19 - RB CJ VerdellrSr/2022, Oregon, 5-08, 202 (DS#26 RB) + More +

In a lot of ways, CJ Verdell is like Oregon predecessor LaMichael James: What he lacks in size he makes up for with toughness and speed. The Ducks sophomore has emerged as a running back to watch with a record-setting performance against Washington State, joining Utah's Zack Moss and UCLA's Joshua Kelley among the Pac-12's top backs at this point of the season. The league returned six running backs this year who rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season: Verdell, Moss, Kelley, as well as Arizona State's Eno Benjamin, Arizona's J.J. Taylor and Oregon State's Jermar Jefferson. Benjamin had 1,642 yards to set a single-season record for the Sun Devils while Jefferson set a Pac-12 record for freshmen with 1,380 yards. Verdell set some records of his own last Saturday when he rushed for 257 yards and three touchdowns in No. 7 Oregon's 37-35 victory over the Cougars.

It was the most rushing yards ever for an Oregon player at Autzen Stadium and ranked fourth all-time for a Duck. It was also the first 200-yard rushing game by a Duck since Royce Freeman in 2016 and the first time an Oregon back has had 200 yards and three touchdowns since Kenjon Barner in 2012. Verdell, who is just 5-foot-9 but powerfully built, has rushed for 753 yards and five touchdowns this season. He burst on the scene last season as a redshirt freshman when he was the only player with at least 1,000 yards rushing and 300 yards receiving in the Power 5. - AP College Football

Freshman kicker Camden Lewis flexed his muscles with a holler as teammates raised him on their shoulders. He had just nailed a 26-yard field goal as time expired, extending No. 11 Oregon's winning streak to seven games with a 37-35 victory over Washington State on Saturday night. He deserved that flex. CJ Verdell ran for a career-high 257 yards and three touchdowns for the Ducks (7-1, 5-0 Pac-12), who haven't lost since the season opener against Auburn.

Anthony Gordon's 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to Brandon Arconado with a minute remaining gave Washington State a 35-34 lead. But then Justin Herbert completed four straight passes on the ensuing drive to get the Ducks close for Lewis' kick. "I want that kick so bad, that's just why you do it," Lewis said about his mindset as he watched Oregon march down the field. "I don't want them to score, I want to kick it." The loss snapped Washington State's four-game winning streak over Oregon. Gordon threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars (4-4, 1-4), while Arconado caught nine passes for 130 yards and two scores. Herbert threw for 222 yards but his streak of 35 straight games with a touchdown pass -- the longest active run in the nation -- was snapped. He threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns last week in a comeback victory over Washington to earn Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. - Oregon/AP College Football
