When Chip Kelly paired Jerry Azzinaro with Brian Norwood to run the defense, the Bruins took a step forward during a pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The defensive unit returns leadership and experience while losing just one defensive starter, defensive l inemen Osa Odighizuwa, to the NFL. Azzinaro was brought back to be the Bruins' defensive coordinator for a fourth season, after his contract was renewed during the offseason. Norwood is back for a second season as an assistant head coach and passing game coordinator for the Bruins. Kelly told reporters last season that Azzinaro still leads the defense but worked closely with Norwood to make defensive adjustments.The defense showed signs of improvement after Norwood's arrival, finishing 42nd in th e country for yards allowed per play after the Bruins finished 94th in 2018 and 115th in 2019. "It was our first year with Coach Norwood so we have to pick things up on the fly," said defensive back Obi Eboh, who transferred from Stanford before the 2020 season. "I think with a second year under our belts with the new system, I think we're all getting well acquainted with the playbook and how we want the structure of our defense to be." Eboh appears to be locked in a position battle with Mo Osling III t o be a starting cornerback. "The best thing about our cornerback room is that everything is competitive and not combative," Eboh said. Defensive back Obi Eboh became the latest UCLA graduate transfer to decide he had a few miles left on his college football odometer, announcing Wednesday that he would return for the 2021 season. Eboh joined graduate transfer running back Brittain Brown, nickelback Qwuantrezz Knight and guard Paul Grattan Jr. in capitalizing on NCAA rules that have granted all players an additional season of eligibility amid the pandemic. - Los Angeles Times

They arrived with hopes of completing one final college football season, worried it might get yanked away, never imagining they might be granted a bonus slate of games. Come for a season, stay for the 2-for-1 special? That's a possibility for UCLA's four graduate transfers, who could go from short-timers to needing to renew their apartment leases. The NCAA has provided an additional year of eligibility for every player amid the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that graduate transfers could play in whatever fo rm the delayed, abbreviated 2020 season takes and then stick around for a full 2021 season. The extra games may be especially beneficial for such players as offensive lineman Paul Grattan Jr., a graduate transfer from Villanova who coveted higher-level c ompetition with the Bruins before heading to the NFL."If I've got it, I'm going to take it," Grattan said. "It can't hurt to take another year to get bigger, stronger, faster, more experienced." Running back Brittain Brown and defensive backs Obi Eboh and Qwuantrezz Knight said they would also assess the situation before deciding whether to return for a 2021 season that's scheduled to include seven home games, including a game against 2019 national champion Louisiana State. "I think there's a sce nario, for sure," Eboh said. "I mean, I'd have to weigh my options, but my goal is to ultimately play in the NFL and have a long career there, so I'm going to do what's best for me in that regard." - Los Angeles Times

UCLA football officially added four transfers Monday: running back Brittain Brown, tight end Evidence Njoku and defensive backs Obi Eboh and Qwuantrezz Knight. Eboh, a Stanford transfer, and Knight, who started his collegiate career at Maryland before tr ansferring to Kent State, can add experience to a secondary that lost three-year starter Darnay Holmes. Eboh played in all of the Cardinal's games the last three seasons, starting seven. As a redshirt junior last year, the 6-2, 195-pound cornerback had 2 3 tackles, one pass breakup and a blocked field goal. - Los Angeles Times
