Tennessee senior outside linebacker Deandre Johnson has decided to use his extra year of eligibility allotted by the NCAA amid this coronavirus pandemic, but it won't be in Knoxville. The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder from Miami entered the NCAA transfer portal and will play elsewhere in 2021 as a graduate transfer. Johnson earned his degree earlier this month. Johnson racked up 28 tackles, six tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles this season for the Volunteers, who had a disappointing 3-7 record and had to withdraw from the Liberty Bowl due to a spike in COVID cases. He collected 2.5 sacks in the opening 31-27 victory at South Carolina, which earned him Southeastern Conference recognition. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Vols senior outside linebacker Deandre Johnson's targeting penalty and subsequent ejection during the first quarter of Saturday's 44-21 loss to Georgia was earned, according to Pruitt. "It was a bad decision on his part," Pruitt said. "He took two-and-a- half steps. The whole thing, really, about any defenseless player is that if you can avoid contact, it's your job to do that. I've always felt that there is inconsistency in the rule but that it's a good rule because it helps our game and protects our pl ayers. "It is a tough rule to kind of enforce, and there have been some inconsistencies in my opinion over the years, but I think Deandre should have avoided the quarterback. It's pretty simple." Johnson, who leads the Vols with 3.5 sacks this season, wa s ineligible for the second half of Saturday's game but is good to go this week. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Several minutes after Tennessee opened its 2020 football season with a 31-27 win at South Carolina last Saturday night, Volunteers coach Jeremy Pruitt praised the dedication of senior edge rusher Deandre Johnson. Pruitt said Johnson chose to move into a campus dorm this past summer, and the 6-foot-3, 255-pound senior from Miami explained this week the several reasons why. "Well, the biggest thing was I didn't have to pay rent, so that was a big lift off my shoulders," a smiling Johnson said on a Zoom ca ll. "I was just able to focus on myself and just kind of dial in and settle down. I had a lot of things going on around me, so it just helped me settle down."I'm just more focused. Now that I'm back off (campus), I kind of used some of the things that I learned in the summer, and they're helping me now. I'm just even-keeled right now and focused on the things that I need to be focused on." Not exactly the first Tennessee defender who rolled off the tongue before the season, Johnson erupted inside Williams-Brice Stadium for a career-high six tackles, a career-best 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. The forced fumble was the fourth of his career, but his 2.5 sacks matched last year's total, which was a single-season best. - Chattanooga Times Free Pres s

SEPT 28 SEC DEFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK: Deandre Johnson, Edge, Tennessee,...Johnson, making his third career start, delivered the best game of his career in a 31-27 win at South Carolina. The edge rusher finished with a career-high six tackles, a care er-best 2.5 sacks for a loss of 11 yards and one forced fumble. The 2.5 sacks led all SEC players in Week 1 and were the most by a Vol since Darrell Taylor had four against Kentucky on Nov. 10, 2018. Johnson's forced fumble in the second quarter stalled a Gamecocks drive. Two of his sacks came on third down, including a critical one in the fourth quarter. - SEC Football
