Baylon Spector, Clemson, Player News
|
It took until the seventh round for Clemson to have its second player, linebacker Baylon Spector, selected in the NFL draft. Spector, a fifth-year linebacker, was taken No. 231 overall by the Buffalo Bills on April 30. That came 189 picks after the Minne sota Vikings took cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. with a second-round selection, No. 42 overall. This is the first year since 2008 that Clemson has had only two players drafted by NFL teams. As far as the last decade, this is the longest span between Clemson players being drafted. There were 122 players selected between fourth-rounder K'Von Wallace (No. 127 overall) and seventh-rounder Tremayne Anchrum (No. 250) in 2020. There were 105 players taken between first-rounder Stephone Anthony (No. 31) and fifth- rounder Grady Jarrett (137) in the '15 draft. - Charleston Post Courier

Clemson is favored to nab its seventh straight ACC championship, the conference announced Monday. Almost 150 media members voted in the preseason poll with the Tigers garnering 125 first-place votes. North Carolina came in second with 16 first-place vote s, while three voters picked Miami to win the Atlantic Coast Conference. Georgia Tech, N.C. State and Virginia each received a first-place vote. Clemson garnered 146 votes to win the Atlantic Division, and the media projected the Tar Heels to come out on top of the Coastal Division (109). N.C. State was given one first-place vote to win the Atlantic - the only school other than Clemson to receive any recognition. The Tigers' ACC reign began in 2015 with that team beating North Carolina, 45-37, in the AC C title game. During the six-year span, they've boasted a 46-3 record against league foes. - The State

Baylon Spector was already a star on his high school team as a sophomore, playing both ways while helping Calhoun High (Ga.) to an undefeated season and a state title. But heading into his junior year in the summer of 2015, Spector was still searching fo r someone to give him an opportunity to play college football somewhere. The versatile playmaker, whose father Robbie played receiver at Clemson in the early 1990s, was traveling around to different camps throughout the southeast hoping to catch the atte ntion of a coaching staff. When he arrived at Clemson for a three-day camp, he had zero scholarship offers. He left with the offer he desired most. "I remember just hoping and praying that I could get an offer from somewhere," Spector recalled.Tha t three-day camp ended up shaping Spector's football career and his future. Spector played all over the field for Hal Lamb at Calhoun High, spending time at quarterback, running back, cornerback and safety. On the first day of Clemson's camp in 2015, he was working out with the safeties for defensive backs coach Mike Reed before Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables suggested Spector give linebacker a try. It didn't take Spector long to make an impression on Venables. "Venables came over to Coach (Dabo) Swinney and said, 'Hey, I don't know who this long-haired kid is over here, but he can play,' " Robbie Spector said. "That sort of hammered home the fact that he's got legitimate opportunity, and if they're seeing something with him the first day of drills, then this could very well become a reality for us." - The State
