Tariq Castro-Fields isn't supposed to be analyzing the benefits of one more spring practice this year. Fact is, there was never supposed to be a 2021 season for him in a Penn State uniform. In an ideal world, he'd have been long gone, pursuing his NFL dr eams. After his junior season in 2019, he considered leaving the program early for the NFL Draft; but he wanted to show he was fully recovered from some nagging injuries that slowed him during the second half of that campaign. And after nagging injuries cost him the final six games of the 2020 season, even a strong first three games couldn't convince him that giving a run at the NFL a shot right now.So, while many of the top prospects who came to Penn State with him in the 2017 recruiting class w ill work out for NFL scouts on campus during the program's Pro Day on Thursday, Castro-Fields hopes he can make one more run at a starting job, one more run at a Big Ten championship. And one more run at a Nittany Lions legacy he hopes will end on his te rms. "Staying healthy is the main goal," Castro-Fields said. "Being able to be available is the most important thing, being able to play the whole season and show what I can do. I have so much more in the tank that I haven't been able to show." - Tribune Review

He finished with 12 total tackles and one pass breakup, and still was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and medi a. - Reading Eagle

Now it's time for Castro-Fields to show his doubters that the early season performance from 2019 wasn't an aberration. He has the talent to do just that, but needs to play up to that talent to reach his ceiling. The 6-foot, 190-pound corner has the physi cal tools to take on any receiver in college football and find success. He's long and athletic with enough physicality to bother bigger opponents. Castro-Fields can attach himself to a receiver's hip and be a nuisance at his worst and a turnover waiting to happen at his best. He's in a position to put those talents on display as the team's best corner and his position coach is expecting just that this season. "(Castro-Fields) is the leader of the corner room," Penn State cornerbacks coach Terry Smith sa id in a teleconference with the media in April. "Tariq, not to put pressure on him, needs to have a great year for us. We need a lock-down corner that can handle the best receiver of whoever our opponent is. We expect Tariq to be that guy." - Centre Time s

Penn State's secondary is going to look very different next year without John Reid, who exhausted his eligibility after five years with the Nittany Lions. Reid played inside and outside at cornerback and often faced the opponent's best wide receiver beca use he was the team's best cornerback. With the former Nittany Lion headed to the NFL draft, Penn State cornerbacks coach Terry Smith has a replacement in mind to step up as the unit's best player - senior Tariq Castro-Fields. "(Castro-Fields) is the lea der of the corner room," Smith said in a teleconference with the media Wednesday morning. "Tariq, not to put pressure on him, needs to have a great year for us. We need a lock-down corner that can handle the best receiver of whoever our opponent is. We e xpect Tariq to be that guy."Penn State will need Castro-Fields and several other cornerbacks to step up next season for the defense to take another step forward and improve its pass coverage. The 6-foot, 190-pound Castro-Fields has all of the meas urables to succeed as a shutdown corner. He has the size, length and athleticism to stick with cornerbacks of any size, but needs to find consistency to do it on a weekly basis. He began the 2019 season as if he was the team's best corner, but soon strug gled to find success as a defender. "His season last year was almost like two different season," Smith said. "The first half of the season he came out of the gate looking like a first-round draft pick. Then he suffered an injury and from that injury on, he was a different player. He wasn't as confident, he wasn't as sure of himself. ... One of our offseason plans and goals for him is to make sure that he can be more consistent throughout the season." - Centre Times
