LaBryan Ray, Alabama, Player News

Alabama football seems to be getting more and more healthy as the season arrives. During the SEC teleconference Wednesday, coach Nick Saban said defensive lineman LaBryan Ray and offensive tackle Kendall Randolph will be available for the game Saturday a gainst Miami. "Both guys have been battling some injuries," Saban said. "I think both will be ready to play in the game. We're very encouraged how they were doing, how they've been doing and the progress that they're making." The news on Ray is especiall y significant, considering Saban said at the beginning of preseason practices that Ray was dealing with a significant groin injury that happened toward the end of the summer. - Montgomery Advertiser

Opening preseason practice Friday, Alabama's football roster was fairly healthy after several starters missed spring with injuries. The exception, Nick Saban said Sunday, was LaBryan Ray. The senior defensive lineman will be out for a few weeks with a "p retty significant groin injury," Saban said in his first news conference of the preseason. Ray has missed time to injuries in each of the previous few seasons but his final season in Tuscaloosa begins with a setback Saban said occurred late in the summer . "Hopefully we'll get him back and he'll be confident in his ability to play and we'll just wait to see day-to-day how that goes," Saban said. Saban was also asked about a few players coming back from previous injuries. On Trey Sanders, Saban said the r unning back is "very close to 100%" and can see the burst returning to his running after being injured in a car wreck last fall. "The issue always with a player who has a significant injury like he had is how's he going to respond when he actually starts having to play football and gets hit and has to hit other people. That's an unknown that we'll just have to wait and see because we've only been in shorts and helmets so far so we've had very limited contact." - Birmingham News

The 2019 season was supposed to be LaBryan Ray's breakout season, the first chance for the former five-star recruit to start at Alabama. A foot injury ended those hopes. Then came 2020, when the Madison native was healthy and initially back on the field. But an elbow injury quickly put Ray back on the sideline. Now in his fifth season, one of the deans of the Tide's defense is ready for another restart. "I feel better, getting to 100 percent overall," Ray said last week. While much of Alabama's storied 2017 recruiting class has either joined the NFL or will be drafted later this month, Ray is the highest rated of that group's members that remain in Tuscaloosa.Despite his promise, Ray has started only seven games over four seasons, while appearin g in 31 games. He has seen the field only 10 times the past two seasons. Before his injuries, NFL scouts polled by AL.com viewed Ray as a mid-to-late round pick. He had the chance to enter the draft after the 2019 and 2020 seasons but predictably decline d each time. His motivation to return in 2021? "Just improving my game and just having another year where I can prove it to myself, prove it to my teammates that I can play at a high level and maintain it," he said last week. "I just have a lot of person al goals as well that I definitely want to accomplish. That's what I'm here to do." - Birmingham News

Following Alabama's win over Georgia Saturday night, Nick Saban provided updates on two injured players who weren't able to play vs. the Bulldogs. Starting defensive end LaBryan Ray has a sprained elbow, an injury that happened during practice, while res erve tight end Carl Tucker was out due to a pulled hamstring that he suffered on special teams during the Crimson Tide's win over Ole Miss last week. Both players will be questionable for next week's game against Tennessee, Saban said. - Birmingham News

If all goes according to plan, 2020 will be a needed fresh start for Alabama defensive lineman LaBryan Ray. The redshirt junior, who changed his number from No. 89 to No. 18 this past offseason, is finally feeling 100 percent after a lingering foot injur y derailed his 2019 season. Following the latest wave of graduations and early departures to the NFL, Ray is one of just three Alabama defenders who has starting experience prior to last season. The others are linebacker Dylan Moses and cornerback Patric k Surtain. That puts the onus on a healthy Ray, who has started four games in three seasons, to anchor a Tide defensive line that is among the younger positional groups on the team."He's one of the leaders in the room," fellow fourth-year junior d efensive lineman Phidarian Mathis said Thursday. "We need that in the room right now. Him coming back, he's gonna be a good help for us." Mathis noted that he and Ray are the "older cats" of a room that also includes some seasoned younger players in reds hirt sophomore Christian Barmore as well as sophomores DJ Dale, Justin Eboigbe and Byron Young. "LaBryan played great last year for the three games he was able to play in," coach Nick Saban said Sept. 2. "He adds something to us that we don't have. He's athletic. He's got initial quickness. He's very positive in terms of pass rush and being able to play space plays because he can run and he is athletic. "And need more guys to be like that on our team on the defensive line. There's too much spread, too m any loose plays in football right now that athletic guys that can run are really, really important to being a good defensive team. And I think that's the biggest thing that he adds, and we need more players to play like him." - Birmingham News
