Heading into his final season of collegiate football, Florida defensive lineman Zachary Carter is locked in. That was the message Wednesday from Florida defensive line coach David Turner, who repeatedly praised his redshirt senior defensive lineman for t he work he's put in dating back to last season. Turner highlighted his consistency, work ethic and dedication to developing his teammates as areas where Carter excels, as the Gators approach the end of the first week of preseason camp."Zach has pr oven to be a playmaker. Zach's a dependable guy. Zach's consistent. He's consistent in his practice habits. That's what we always talk about, which makes him a consistent player. Zach, obviously he has talent. Zach's starting to understand the game more, understanding offenses more, understanding what people are trying to do," Turner said. "So all of that makes him a more effective player in terms of dissecting plays, how to watch tape, how to study film. Those things make him a better player when he ge ts out there on Saturday. But the biggest thing with Zach is his consistency. He's smart. He can play all three positions across the board and he works at it. The game's important to him." The game doesn't end when he leaves the field. With a far greate r understanding of the sport, Carter has honed in on his film study and explored every avenue possible to elevate his game. - Gainesville Sun

Florida defensive line coach David Turner had his football prayers answered this offseason. Defensive end Zachary Carter returned for his senior season, a smart decision according to Turner. "I told Zach I thought he had a chance if he came back to reall y establish himself as one of the better D-linemen," Turner said. "He knew, I think deep down, he knew he wasn't quite ready to make the jump." Turner's starting defensive tackles were, as seniors Kyree Campbell and Tedarrell Slaton moved on to the NFL i nstead of returning to school for their extra year of eligibility. That left the Gators with a major void inside, which was filled by the addition of grad transfers Daquan Newkirk (Auburn) and Antonio Shelton (Penn State)."It was vital for us beca use we knew we needed, hopefully, a couple of older guys that fit in," Turner said. "We were fortunate to get two really good guys, not just players, but really good people. I did my homework. In this business everybody kind of knows everybody and you ma ke phone calls. You want to make sure you're getting a guy that's going to be really good in your room. "And during the process, it's like recruiting all over again. You want to find out, No. 1, why they're leaving. No. 2, what are their goals? And No. 3 , would it be a fit for you? Both of those guys checked all three boxes, and, I'm glad to have them. They've been really good for the younger guys and I think they've meshed really good with our group of guys." - Gainesville Sun

Florida defensive end Zachary Carter made the decision to return for his redshirt senior season. Fielding questions from the media Thursday night following Florida's first spring practice, Zachary Carter handled himself like a pro at the podium. He could have turned pro after leading the Gators in sacks (5.0) and tackles for loss (9.5) last year, but also considered his other future profession. "I think I'll do good on that side of the camera," Carter told reporters after revealing that he's majoring in journalism at UF. "I really want to get my degree."Graduation was one of the main reasons he decided to come back to school for his redshirt senior season. Despite his NFL aspirations and potential, Carter is mindful of his post-playing career. " I just know that this football stuff, it doesn't last forever," he said. "I'm excited that I could possibly have a future in the NFL, but everybody says it stands for "Not For Long." "So it's just good to have that degree. I think more guys should have t hat attitude towards football and school, but everybody's in a different situation. But that was a big thing for me." - Gainesville Sun

Florida coach Dan Mullen has been issued a reprimand and fined $25,000 by the SEC for his role in the melee between UF and Missouri players and coaches at the end of the first half of Saturday night's game in The Swamp. Defensive linemen Zachary Carter a nd Antwuan Powell, who we ejected from the game, have been suspended from the first half of the Gators' game with Georgia in Jacksonville on Saturday. "I respect the decision from the conference office," Mullen said Monday. "As the head coach, it is my r esponsibility to defuse these types of situations, and I didn't live up to that standard."Mullen ignited the situation when he sprinted onto the field to confront the officials after quarterback Kyle Trask took a late, high hit attempting to throw a Hail Mary pass on the final play of the half and no flag was thrown. Right behind their head coach, UF players charged toward the Missouri sideline, where there was pushing and shoving among multiple players from both teams and punches were thrown. Th e teams were separated after a few minutes and went to their respective locker rooms. There were no further incidents in the second half. Carter and Powell were ejected for fighting, while Missouri outside linebacker Tre Williams was tossed for a flagran t unsportsmanlike foul. Carter is a starter and Powell is a true freshman who likely will be redshirted this season. - Gainesville Sun

Junior defensive tackle Zachary Carter was named the SEC defensive lineman of the week for his performance in the Gators' 38-24 victory over South Carolina. A dominant force in the middle, Carter had eight tackles (tying for the team lead), 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hurries against the Gamecocks. Carter was a four-star defensive end coming out of high school who now has settled in at defensive tackle, although he can still play end if needed. "He's a guy that has bought into our program more or as m uch as any of the d-linemen that we've had since we've been here in what we expect from him, with the effort from him we expect to play, and how we expect him to do it," Mullen said. "He's done an amazing job of buying into all of that. Part of that is y ou look at self-evaluation."You've seen him look at what his strengths are and then play to his strengths and buy into his strengths, and you see the success he's having now. He's not going to be a big 340-pound inside guy, but he's really quick. He's big enough to be quick inside, and he's not this twitch edge guy, but he's a big edge guy that has athletic ability. So, that helps him create those different matchups where we can move him around on the field." - Gainesville Sun
