Brian Robinson Jr. grew up near the Alabama campus watching the Crimson Tide win championships, and wanting to play a big part in one. With the fifth-year senior and first-year featured back running for a career-high 204 yards and Heisman Trophy winner B ryce Young throwing three touchdown passes, the Crimson Tide earned the chance to play for yet another national title with a 27-6 victory over Cincinnati on Friday in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Cotton Bowl.It was a bitter finish for Desmond Ridder and for the Bearcats, the first non-Power Five team ever to get a taste of the CFP. They were physically overwhelmed on the big stage. "B-Rob was huge for us all night," Young said. "Making that first guy miss, falling forward fightin g for those extra yards. He was a constant." "As a young kid, just always wanted to be a part of this program. Just always wanted to play for a national championship," Robinson said. "Just being able to go out there and just lead this team in this big ga me on this big stage...it's like a dream come true." Alabama (13-1) has missed the four-team playoff only once and will try to win its second national title in a row and fourth in the eight seasons of the CFP format. Alabama players once again got to light up those celebratory cigars after another win over border rival Tennessee. This one just didn't come quite so easily for the first three-plus quarters. Bryce Young passed for 371 yards and two touchdowns, ran for t wo more scores and led No. 4 Alabama to a dominant fourth quarter and a 52-24 victory Saturday night over the Volunteers.Brian Robinson ran for 107 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Crimson Tide (7-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) score 21 of their 28 fourth-quarter points in a little over six minutes. "It's a special rivalry to the Alabama fans and the players so we wanted to just have fun with it while we can," Robinson said. That fourth-quarter flurry turned a mostly competitive game agai nst the Volunteers (4-4, 2-3), fueled by Hendon Hooker's 282-yard passing performance, into another lopsided final score. "The offense answered and we kept putting up points," Tide coach Nick Saban said. The result was Alabama's 15th consecutive win in t he border rivalry, with the previous five having an average margin of 33 points. And the players got to return to the field after it was over to light up and celebrate. The Tide monopolized the ball for more than 40 minutes and converted 15 of 20 third-d own plays. Tennessee was 2 of 13. Young, a leading Heisman Trophy candidate, completed 31 of 43 passes and turned five of his frequent scrambles into first downs or touchdowns. Brian Robinson Jr. rushed for career highs of 171 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 1 Alabama mostly throttled the nation's top offense in a 42-21 victory Saturday over No. 12 Mississippi. Bryce Young passed for a couple of touchdowns for the Crimson Ti de (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) but the 'Bama defense and ground game stole some of the thunder from a matchup of the two leading Heisman Trophy contenders coming into the game. Alabama turned to Robinson to play keep away from Matt Corral and the offense of the Rebels (3-1, 0-1), who had breezed through three nonconference games before an open date. The Tide's fifth-year senior carried 36 times and picked up the first 100-yard game of his career.Young completed 21 of 27 passes for 241 yard s and was intercepted once for Alabama, which led 28-0 at halftime. Oddsmakers had him as the second-leading Heisman candidate coming into the game, behind only Corral. The Rebels star ran for a touchdown but was mostly held in check by a team he torched last season. Corral also passed for a touchdown, completing 22 of 32 passes for 213 yards while losing a fumble. Corral extended his streak of games with a TD pass to 16 games with 2:23 left, matching Eli Manning for the second-longest such streak at Ol e Miss. Alabama's defense, burned by Ole Miss for 48 points and 647 yards a year ago, made the big fourth-down stops and plenty of others. The Tide limited Ole Miss to 291 total yards, despite giving up a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Don't expect Alabama running back Brian Robinson to play the position like his predecessor, Steelers running back Najee Harris. Harris made plenty of highlight reels with his ability to leap over defenders. But Robinson, a Hillcrest alumnus, said he's no t a big hurdle guy and that's not really part of his game plan. "I have my own style of how I run the ball," Robinson said Monday. "I like to break tackles and make people miss. Whatever way I can do that, just being instinctive. That's how I'm going to do that. More than likely it will be lowering the shoulder or dropping my pads." For reference, here's a preview of that style from the national championship game: Robinson finished 2020 with 91 carries for 483 yards and six touchdowns. For the first time since 2015, a man with the last name of Harris won't lead Alabama football in rushing attempts. Former Alabama running back Najee Harris is now with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Damien Harris has been with the Patriots since 2019. The S teelers' Harris leaves behind a colossal job opening. He finished with 251 of the team's 414 carries given to running backs this past season, or 60.6%. That's the third-most for a running back during coach Nick Saban's time in Tuscaloosa. Derrick Henry's 72.21% of Alabama's carries when he won the Heisman in 2015 ranks as the highest.Redshirt senior Brian Robinson Jr., who had 21.9% of running back carries this past season, is expected to have the first crack at replacing Harris. He's never been the main back, but not because he's incapable. "When he did play last year, he played extremely well for us," Saban said in March. "I was really pleased. He just didn't play that much, and it really wasn't his fault. Najee was one of those guys, the more he played, the more he ran the ball, the better he got. So, he really wasn't one of those guys you wanted to take in and out of a game all the time. He would get on a roll." The Crimson Tide could take the same approach with Robinson in 2021. Or, Alabam a could decide not to give one back a majority of the carries. Even with Keilan Robinson and Kyle Edwards entering the transfer portal this offseason, the Crimson Tide still has plenty of talent at running back with players such as Roydell Williams, Jase McClellan, Trey Sanders and incoming five-star freshman Camar Wheaton. - Montgomery Advertiser

Redshirt senior Brian Robinson has been in the room with elite running back talent for years. Now, he has the best chance he's had while in Tuscaloosa to be the lead back. He rushed for six touchdowns in 2020 while playing behind Harris, Alabama's all-ti me leader in touchdowns, rushing touchdowns and rushing yards. But just because Robinson has waited patiently for this opportunity doesn't mean he is guaranteed most of the work. He is joined by some talented young backs, such as sophomores Roydell Willi ams and Jase McClellan. Incoming five-star freshman Camar Wheaton could also receive some carries. Redshirt sophomore Trey Sanders, who's recovering from an injury suffered in a November car accident, could also contribute if healthy. When Brian Robinson first received interest from Nick Saban and Alabama football, he had a unique advantage. As a four-star running back at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa, Robinson was able to spend time around Derrick Henry and take notes on his ap proach. "Just watching how he did things around here and how he approached every practice and every game, that was a big way for me to see how things should be done," said Robinson. Robinson played behind players like Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs and Bo Sc arbrough early in his career and took time to learn from the way they worked.Watching each running back that stood ahead of him on the depth chart reach the NFL drove him to work hard. After four years of steady progression up the depth chart and constant improvement on the stat sheet, Robinson chose to use his free year of eligibility and return for the 2021-22 season. "I would like to do everything that a running back can do out of the backfield," said Robinson. "If it's running, catching, bloc king or whatever a feature back should do." Najee Harris' run at Alabama may be over, but that's not the case for the other senior from last year's Crimson Tide running back room. Brian Robinson, the No. 2 running back for the Tide each of the last two seasons, decided to return to Alabama for a s econd senior season instead of leaving for the NFL. The Tuscaloosa native explained that decision Monday, a choice that leaves the Tide with a veteran and experienced figure to help lead the way for an otherwise youthful running back unit. "My decision t o come back, I saw many opportunities for me to become a better player on and off the field, improve my draft grade and so on," Robinson said. "I just felt like there are many opportunities for me to win this year. I'm all in for it." It could ultimately benefit both Robinson and the Crimson Tide. Had Robinson opted for the NFL, Alabama would've entered this season without anyone who registered more than 30 carries last year. - Birmingham News
