Head injuries limited Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor to a combined five games played last season, stripped Wisconsin's wide receiver corps of its top two playmakers and diluted UW's overall offense. Head coach Paul Chryst and his staff will have to functi on without Davis for an indefinite period of time. UW officials announced Friday that Davis is out because of a head injury.Davis practiced Wednesday and showed no signs of injury. UW was off Thursday. Although it is difficult to measure the sever ity of head injuries, it is worth noting that Davis was at practice Friday and was not wearing sunglasses. He rode a stationary bike for a few minutes early in practice and then watched the rest of the day with the other wide receivers. Players who suffe r concussions often are told to remain indoors, sometimes in darkened rooms. Davis has 15 starts and 39 games played at UW. He has 99 catches for 1,164 yards and 12 touchdowns. - Journal Sentinel

Alvis Whitted's second season at Wisconsin is on track to be much better than his rookie campaign. Consider that barely more than a week after Whitted was hired to coach UW's wide receivers in March 2020, the NCAA shut down its winter and spring sports b ecause of COVID-19. That meant no spring practice for UW and no in-person coaching for Whitted until preseason camp.Then, after Big Ten teams finally got up and running in October, concussions limited UW's Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis to a combin ed five games and 11 receptions. "We missed the experience of guys that know game situations, that know how to make plays in those tough situations," Whitted explained. "We missed those down-the-field throws because they can take the top off of the cover age. "When those guys are out there, they're different and they add a different dimension to our passing game." Whitted should have a deeper and more experienced unit when UW opens camp Aug. 6. Davis and Pryor both opted to return for their final seasons . Davis has 15 starts and 39 games played at UW. In the days leading to Wisconsin's game against rival Minnesota, offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph said he was optimistic injured senior wide receivers Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis would eventually choose to return to UW for the 2021 season. Pryor annou nced last month he would be back next season and Monday night Davis joined him by announcing he would return as well. The NCAA ruled before the season that players who participated in 2020 would not lose a year of eligibility. Davis played in only two g ames last season. He suffered an apparent concussion in UW's second game, a 49-11 victory at Michigan. Pryor played in only three games. - Journal Sentinel

Former Green Bay Packers wide receivers coach Alvis Whitted has accepted the same position at Wisconsin. Wisconsin announced Wednesday that Whitted has joined Badgers coach Paul Chryst's staff. The Packers fired Whitted on Jan. 30 after one season. Whitt ed had been Colorado State's wide receivers coach for seven seasons before joining the Packers staff. During Whitted's stint at Colorado State, Rashard Higgins in 2014 and Michael Gallup in 2017 were finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation's top college receiver. He played in the NFL from 1998-2006 with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders. - AP College Football

Wisconsin Badgers wide receiver Danny Davis says at the trial of his former teammate Quintez Cephus that one of the women who accused Cephus of raping her had flirted with him shortly after meeting him for the first time. Cephus is charged with second- a nd third-degree sexual assault for alleged attacks on two 18-year-old women in 2018. Cephus has said the women wanted to have sex, but they testified they were too drunk to consent.The Wisconsin State Journal reported Thursday that Davis testified that Cephus came out of the room naked and asked Davis to take a photo of the women, who were both asleep. Davis says he took one picture of a woman who immediately got up and demanded he erase it. He did. The trial was to conclude Friday. - AP College Football
