 Bubba Bolden, Miami, Player News

  08/22/21 - SS Bubba BoldenSr/2022, Miami, 6-2, 209 (DS#16 SS) + More +

A longtime NFL scout with front-office experience, who is respected in the industry, told me recently that among UM players who could turn pro next spring, the only two whose tape and NFL measurables would warrant a selection in the first half of the draft, in his view, are left tackle Zion Nelson (if he continues to improve) and safety Bubba Bolden. But the scout said he has some doubts about Bolden, believing he has been "overhyped" and expressing concern about the unevenness in his play in 2020. (To his credit, Bolden has acknowledged the need to improve as one reason he returned for 2021.) That scout saw Bolden as a player with the potential to rise to late in the second day of the draft if he performs more consistently this year. For now, he called Bolden a mid third-day pick (fifth-round range). - Miami Herald

Another top Miami Hurricanes player has chosen to return to UM next season instead of entering the 2021 NFL Draft. But this time it's on the defensive side of the ball. Redshirt junior safety Bubba Bolden, a 2020 semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, will stay at Miami to hone his already considerable all-around skills and likely raise his draft stock in 2022. Bolden's decision, announced Tuesday in a video, came despite news that UM safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Ephraim Banda is leaving Miami to become the Utah State defensive coordinator. - Miami Herald

Did you see the Hurricane with blood continually trickling down his face in the Clemson game? He's the one who was everywhere - blocking two field goals, forcing a fumble with his shoulder during a ferocious tackle of future first-round draft pick Trevor Lawrence and passionately, desperately screaming encouragement to his teammates to keep fighting. University of Miami safety Bubba Bolden resembled a prize fighter, his ring being the football field, his mantra being to "keep playing fast, keep playing hard, keep playing physical, run to the ball and tackle." "That's what we live by," Bolden, a 6-3, 200-pound redshirt junior, said immediately after No. 1 Clemson dominated then-No. 7 and now-No. 13 UM (3-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) Saturday night. "We're focused on Pitt. A lot of emotions. No one likes to lose especially not me. I'm not a loser."

The former USC Trojan and first-team Parade All-American, who transferred to UM last year, has certainly proven he's a winner in his first full season on the field for the Hurricanes. As UM prepares to face Pittsburgh (3-2, 2-2) at noon Saturday (ACC Network) at Hard Rock Stadium, Bolden vowed again Wednesday to take that same intensity against a Panthers team that lost its last two games by one point. "When you love a game so much, when you love something that you do and it's your job, you're going to give it your all," said Bolden, who leads UM with 27 tackles and has three forced fumbles, two blocked kicks, an interception, sack, three tackles for loss and a pass breakup in four games. "I've never been one to quit. I've never been one to back down from any fights. You just gotta have that mentality. I'm pretty sure our whole team has that, not only me." - Miami Herald

University of Miami coach Manny Diaz said that he got a text from safety Bubba Bolden on Sunday. "Bubba was very active. He played very fast and very hard,'' Diaz told WQAM during his weekly interview on Monday morning. "Bubba texted me yesterday and said, 'Coach I really played poorly, and I just want you to know I'm going to play a lot better next week." Very impressive considering Bolden, a 6-3, 200-pound redshirt junior who last season transferred to UM and originally played at Southern Cal, was making plays everywhere on the field in the Hurricanes' 47-34 win at Louisville on Saturday night. Bolden led all players with 11 tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. "Our guys don't feel like that they played very well,'' Diaz said. "They feel like they played very hard, they feel like they competed...They know that their fight and their desire and the way they stuck together is what grinded out the win, but from Bubba on I think the guys really feel, 'Hey, let's get back to work. I can play a lot better than this." - Miami Herald

Safety Bubba Bolden, who sustained a season-ending ankle injury when celebrating an interception against FSU on Nov. 2, will be ready for the start of the season, safeties coach Ephraim Banda said. "He was recovering at a very fast pace and really probably for sure we would have got him the second half of spring," Baker said. "He'll be 100 percent ready to go for sure. We were just starting to see that glimpse of him last year, how good a player he can be. He's much taller, longer than [safeties Gurvan Hall and Amari Carter]. Really does a great job with his hips, covering a lot of ground, and does it deceptively with how long he is. The sky is the limit for a guy like Bubba Bolden. "With a full season and off-season, him getting comfortable we'll see even bigger improvement out of him next year." - Miami Herald

Miami Hurricanes safety Bubba Bolden was peaking when his first season at UM came to an abrupt halt, the product of an ankle injury in celebration of his first interception as a Hurricane in early November at Florida State. Bolden was likely to return to the team at some point during spring drills after the mid-air collision with fellow safety Gurvan Hall in celebration of his takeaway caused him to land awkwardly on the ankle. The long, 6-foot-3, 184-pound redshirt junior was recovering quickly, according to Miami defensive coordinator Blake Baker, before the coronavirus pandemic suspended all college athletic activities in March. "He was recovering at a very fast pace, and really, we probably, for sure, were going to get him the second half of spring," Baker said in a web conference with reporters last week. "I think he'll be 100 percent, for sure, ready to go [when the team gets back together]." - Sun Sentinel

The celebratory hit that Miami safety Bubba Bolden took from a teammate during the win over Florida State was a costly one for the Hurricanes. Bolden will miss the remainder of the Hurricanes' season because of an injury that happened shortly after he made a third-quarter interception of a deflected pass Saturday in the 27-10 win at Florida State. Bolden caught the pass thrown by Florida State's Alex Hornibrook near midfield, got up and sprinted a few yards. A few seconds later, things went wrong when Miami teammate and fellow safety Gurvan Hall leaped and crashed into Bolden -- who landed awkwardly and sustained what appeared to be an ankle injury.

"We will not have Bubba for the rest of the year," Miami coach Manny Diaz said Monday. "Unfortunately, he'll be out for the season, which is tough on our defense because he was really, really starting to play at a very high level. We'll have to do what we always do. We'll rely on the depth we have at the safety position and move on." Bolden, who missed the first four games of the season while awaiting NCAA clearance following his transfer from USC, appeared in five games for Miami (5-4, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). He had 11 tackes, a pass breakup and the interception. "Thank you to everyone for reaching out and sending prayers," Bolden wrote on Twitter. Miami defensive coordinator Blake Baker said Bolden was becoming a bigger part of the Hurricanes' game plan each week. - AP College Football
