A cat survived a scare. So did the Miami Hurricanes. D'Eriq King threw for 200 yards and rushed for 67 more, freshman Andy Borregales kicked a go-ahead 43-yard field goal with 2:04 remaining and No. 22 Miami rallied from a halftime deficit to beat Appala chian State 25-23 on Saturday night. Cam'Ron Harris rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown for Miami (1-1), and Don Chaney Jr. had a rushing score before leaving in the first half with a leg injury.King led a 10-play, 55-yard drive in the fourth that set up Borregales for what became the winning points. "Obviously, we're going to be happy," Harris said. "I'm not satisfied with the win, but that was a great team that we played." And the Mountaineers - who still get talked about for their stunning win at Michigan in 2007 - put a big scare into Miami. "App State is a really good football team," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. "They made it tough on us. We made it tough on ourselves. ... This is what they do. They go on the road and they take down people on the road. But they didn't take us down." Jalen Virgil had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Camerun Peoples had 95 rushing yards and a score for the Mountaineers (1-1), who took a 23-22 lead with 5:48 left when Malik Williams caught a 3-ya rd touchdown pass from Chase Brice. But Appalachian State's last chance stalled near midfield, and Miami got the ball back with 55 seconds left and ran out the clock. "Our players took them down to the wire," Appalachian State coach Shawn Clark said. "It 's a gut-wrenching loss." Brice completed 21 of 34 passes for 199 yards with a touchdown and an interception. - Miami/AP College Football

University of Miami junior leading rusher Cam'Ron Harris has reaffirmed his devotion to the Hurricanes and announced Friday on Twitter that he will return for next season rather than enter the NFL Draft. Harris, who started and ended the season strong fo r the Hurricanes but struggled on and off in between, posted on social media in late October that he was "disrespected" after subpar performance against Clemson, Pittsburgh and Virginia. But Harris will be back for at least one more year. The NCAA has granted every player an extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic, although Harris still had eligibility remaining. The former consensus four-star prospect was rated the nation's seventh-best running back out of Miami Carol City High and became Miami's featured tailback this season after DeeJay Dallas was drafted in the fourth round by the Seattle Seahawks. Harris has run for 643 yards and a team-leading 10 touchdowns on 126 carries in 11 games this season, averaging 5.1 yards a car ry. - Miami Herald

On WQAM's Hurricane Hotline, Diaz made a good point in explaining one under-the-radar reason for Cam'Ron Harris' improvement this season: "Cam's work in the weight room has allowed him to maintain his speed throughout the course of a [long] run." On his 75-yard run on Saturday, "he would have been pushed out of bounds three quarters of the way last year. He hit 23 mph on our GPS" on that run. Diaz also believes Jaylon Knighton's presence has pushed Harris to improve. - Miami Herald

When Rhett Lashlee arrived as UM's offensive coordinator in January, he knew he had a solid lead running back in Cam'Ron Harris. But he didn't know he had this - a player who has been more impactful than nearly any other running back in the country two w eeks into the season. I asked Lashlee if Harris is even better than what he expected after watching Harris' film in January and February. "When I first got here, Cam seemed like a solid back," Lashlee said. "Four days of spring ball he really impressed m e. He's faster than what I thought he was, more explosive than what I thought he was. First two games, he has shown flashes of that. Really glad he has had a strong first two games." Not only is Harris third in the country in rushing yards at 268, but hi s 10.3 average - bolstered by two long TD runs - places him fourth in yards per carry. Only Texas-San Antonio's Sincere McCormick and SMU's Ulysses Bentley IV have more rushing yards than Harris in FBS. - Miami Herald

Cam'Ron Harris ran for 134 yards and scored twice to lead Miami to a 31-14 season-opening win over UAB Thursday night. Harris' second touchdown from 4 yards late in the third period gave Miami a 24-14 lead after the Blazers of Conference USA got within t hree on Spencer Brown's 6-yard run. Houston graduate transfer D'Eriq King threw for a touchdown and scored one for Miami, which became the first school from a Power 5 conference to begin the game-depleted 2020 season. ACC, SEC and Big 12 schools will pla y football while the Big Ten and Pac-12 cancelled fall sports because of coronavirus concerns. King's 4-yard pass to Brevin Jordan with time expiring in the third quarter gave Miami its final margin. Thursday's attendance of 8,153 at Hard Rock Stadium fe ll short of the 20 percent cap allowed at the 65,000-seat venue's capacity in compliance with coronavirus social-distancing guidelines. Spectators were scattered throughout the stadium's lower and upper decks. - Miami/AP College Football

D'Eriq King only has gotten to practice with the Miami Hurricanes a handful of times. He got to participate in winter workouts shortly after he transferred from the Houston Cougars, then got to participate in four spring practices before the COVID-19 pan demic forced them to shut down. In the past few weeks, he has gotten work out on Coral Gables again, too. He only needed one practice to pick out who the biggest "freak" on the roster was, and it's not necessarily the obvious choice. "Cam Harris, the run ning back," King said in an appearance on Siriux XM's "Packer and Durham" on Wednesday.Mark Packer, one of the two hosts of the ACC Network-simulcasted show, asked King who had stood out to him so far. "Who is the one guy that you go, 'You know wh at? That guy is a freak?'" he asked. The quarterback singled out his likely starting running back. "When I first saw him run, when I first got there for my first workout I was like, 'Whoa, this guy's this big, running that fast?'" King said. "And then we got to spring ball and he showed out all four days, so he surprised the heck out of me. I'm anxious to see him play this year." - Miami Herald
