Indiana senior defensive back Marcelino McCrary-Ball had surgery to repair a torn ACL last October, the same morning of IU's breakthrough overtime win against Penn State that began a historic 2020 season. The rest of the season was one of mixed emotions for Ball -- happy to see the Hoosiers doing well and sad for not being a part of it. Ball found himself Googling "How quickly could you come back from an ACL tear" as he watched IU games on TV or listened on radio. "I had no negative thoughts," Ball said . "It was just more so can I come out there and play? Just put me in a little zone. I can't (play) man-to-man, I can't blitz right now but put me in a little Cover 3, Cover 4, I could go out there."Ball said he's still "far out" as far as taking p art in football practices this spring but is confident he's on the right track to be ready by the season opener Sept. 4 at Iowa. His return could be important to a secondary that lost All-Big Ten safety Jamar Johnson to the NFL Draft. The 6-foot, 214-pou nd Ball has proven his worth as a playmaker at the husky position, with 15.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and three interceptions. - Herald Bulletin

By outward appearances, Indiana senior defensive back Marcelino Ball was enjoying a breakthrough 2019 season. Ball thrived at the hybrid defensive back-linebacker husky position for IU, with two sacks, two pass breakups and a team-high six quarterback hu rries. Inside, though, Ball was struggling, dealing with anxiety that comes with the week-by-week expectations of playing Big Ten football. "Although 2019 was a good year personally for me, as a team we went crazy, 8-4, but for me, it was a terrible year ," Ball said. Ball said he's at peace now, even after a torn ACL at the start of camp four weeks ago sidelined him for the 2020 season. He was voted as one of five team captains and said he's ready to take on the role of player-coach, similar to a role f ormer IU offensive lineman Coy Cronk provided when he went down with a season-ending injury last season."I'm keeping my mind right, with trying to communicate, stay close to the team," Ball said. "Trying to keep whatever I was improving on mentall y in the game, keep improving on that, helping with my teammates." Ball said he is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday and wants to be on the sideline Saturday for IU's season opener against No. 8 Penn State (3:30 p.m., FS1). "I'd rather be a resource, a reason why we improve and win games from the sideline view rather than mope around because I'm not playing," Ball said. - Herald Bulletin

Indiana's young defense will go into the 2020 season without a key senior leader. Senior defensive back Marcelino Ball suffered a torn ACL during seven-on-seven practice drills last week and will be out for the season, IU head coach Tom Allen announced M onday. Allen said Ball will undergo surgery to repair his knee in the near future. "I hate that for him because he's been such a great player for us and matured as a young man," Allen said. The 6-foot, 220-pound Ball, from Roswell, Georgia, started 12 ga mes at the hybrid defensive back-linebacker husky position for the Hoosiers last season, finishing with 47 tackles, two sacks and two pass breakups.Allen said the injury was non-contact, with the tear coming after Ball planted on the turf. "It was n't during a collision between two guys or even going against somebody," Allen said. "But that's an unfortunate reality of what sometimes can occur." With Ball out, Allen said junior defensive back Bryant Fitzgerald will move into the starting husky role this season. A hard-hitter, the 6-0, 209-pound Fitzgerald is making the transition from safety to husky after posting 58 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in his first two seasons. - Herald Bulletin

The Indiana defense suffered a major setback long before the delayed 2020 season got started. Husky Marcelino Ball has suffered a torn ACL and is out for the season. Head coach Tom Allen broke the news on a video conference with the media on Monday. The injury was non-contact, resulting from planting on the turf according to Allen. In his fifth year at IU, 2020 was expected to be Ball's final season with the program. He also suffered a season ending injury three weeks into the 2017 season after making the ESPN and BTN All-Freshman team in 2016. Under new NCAA eligibility guidelines stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, Ball is able to return for the 2021 season as a sixth year senior if he so chooses. All fall athletes were granted an additional year of eligibility. - The Daily Hoosier

Indiana will name current New York Giants strength and conditioning coach Aaron Wellman as its new strength and conditioning coach, a source confirmed Saturday. Wellman was hired by the New York Giants in 2016 and, according to his Giants bio, "significa ntly changed the Giants' offseason and in-season training regimens, and the result has been a substantial decrease in the number of season-ending injuries suffered by Giants players." Wellman also has strong Indiana and Big Ten ties. He began his career as a graduate assistant and assistant strength and conditioning coach at IU from 1997-2001. From there, Wellman had stints in football strength and conditioning coaching at Michigan State (2001-03), Ball State (2003-09), San Diego State (2009-11) and Mic higan (2011-14) and Notre Dame (2015).
