Jake Springer, Mississippi, Player News
|
A 6-foot, 205-pound transfer defensive back from Navy, Jake Springer sat out last season but is working with the first-team defense at safety and nickelback this spring. Springer told the media he's comfortable at those positions and thinks his versatili ty is a major asset, which is something Jones agreed with. "He really could play everywhere," Jones said. "He's a guy that could play the run, could cover and be a ball hawk. He's definitely a vital piece in this defense. I look forward to playing with h im this year." It's hard to separate the two junior college defensive line transfers from one another. Both missed time early in camp. But returned to make impressive sacks in two-minute drills in last Saturday's scrimmage. Both, according to Kiffin, are rotating between inside and outside positions. "Obviously everybody was wondering about the new cats that came in," Springer said. "They've been getting after it. I think all of our defensive line really has a confidence. We've got them on the back end, and they can go do those things." - The Clarion Ledger

Ole Miss has secured a commitment from a productive edge rusher. Jacob Springer, a 6-foot-1, 206-pound graduate transfer from Navy, announced his commitment to Ole Miss via Instagram on Tuesday evening. Springer recorded eight sacks, 16 tackles for loss and seven quarterback hurries for the Midshipmen in 2019, ranking fourth in the AAC in tackles for loss and fifth in the conference in sacks. Springer is a raw, edge-rushing talent. He played safety his first two years at Navy, logging two interceptions and two pass breakups in 2018. He also used his athleticism to return kicks and punts, averaging 8.2 yards per punt return and 15.6 yards per kick return. - Daily Mississippian
