Nick Starkel threw a pair of touchdown passes about three minutes apart and San Jose State beat Hawaii 17-13 on Saturday night in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams. Kairee Robinson blocked a punt to set up a seven-play, 44-yard drive cul minating when Starkel hit Isaiah Hamilton for a 13-yard score and, after a Hawaii three-and-out, he connected with Jermaine Braddock 1-yard TD with 2:23 left in the first half to give San Jose State the lead for good at 14-7. SJSU (2-1) has won nine conf erence games dating to a 38-35 loss to UNLV on November 23, 2019. Hawaii's Calvin Turner scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to open the scoring late in the first quarter and Matthew Shipley made field goals of 25 and 23 yards in the third quarter to make i t 14-13.Matt Mercurio kicked a 26-yard field goal to cap the scoring with 1:19 to play. Turner returned the kickoff the Hawaii 36 and the Rainbow Warriors moved to the SJSU 21 before time expired. San Jose State's Kyle Harmon was ejected after he was flagged for targeting early in the fourth quarter. The senior linebacker, an all-MWC selection last season, finished with nine tackles, five solo. Chevan Cordeiro completed 18 of 39 passes for 242 yards and added 39 yards rushing for Hawaii (1-3). Playing in front of its home fans for the first time in 637 days, San Jose State didn't disappoint Saturday night in its season opener. The reigning Mountain West champion hit the ground running as the Spartans opened their season with a 45-14 rout of So uthern Utah at CEFCU Stadium. The Spartans (1-0) found the end zone on each of their first five possessions, with quarterback Nick Starkel orchestrating a quick-strike attack. The senior threw for 394 yards and four touchdowns before being replaced to op en the fourth quarter. He also ran it in from a yard out on the game's opening drive. Starkel spread the wealth by hooking up with 10 different targets, including TDs of 23 yards to Jermaine Braddock in the first quarter, explosive plays of 70 and 65 yar ds in the second quarter to tight end Sam Olson and Nevada transfer Charles Ross, respectively, plus a 14-yard floater to tight end Derrick Deese Jr. in the third quarter. - San Jose Mercury News

Nick Starkel threw for four touchdowns and 394 yards and defending Mountain West Conference champion San Jose State kicked off the season with a 45-14 win over Southern Utah on Saturday night. Starkel, who finished 17-of-28 passing to nine receivers with one interception, also had a rushing touchdown to tie his career high with five total TDs. He finished 6 yards short of his fifth 400-yard passing game and a one TD throw shy of his career best. The Spartans outgained the Thunderbirds 534-250.Sta rkel's 1-yard run opened the scoring and San Jose State led 21-0 after one quarter. Starkel threw three first-half TD passes, including a 70-yarder to Sam Olson and a 65-yarder to Charles Ross with the Spartans leading 35-14 at the break. Starkel's lone interception was a pick-6 returned by Kobe Singleton. Thunderbirds quarterback Justin Miller caught a TD pass off a trick play that came after a muffed punt by the Spartans, their first lost fumble since the 2019 season. The Spartans went undefeated in s ix MWC games, were 7-1 overall and finished 24th in the final Associated Press poll last season. Since its inception in 2012, San Jose State University quarterback Nick Starkel is the first and only Spartan eligible to be nominated for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. The Texas-based college football award named after Pro Football Hall of Fame ru nning back Earl Campbell calls for nominations of players on offense with high school or college ties to the state of Texas. The nominees also would possess integrity, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity which defined Campbell's footba ll career from his high school days through a storied National Football League career.Starkel finished his first San Jose State season leading the Spartans to a Mountain West championship, the school's first conference football title since 1991. H e became the first known first-year player in a San Jose State uniform to be named a season team captain and completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 2,174 yards and 17 touchdowns in eight games. Nick Starkel began his collegiate career at Arkansas (and then Texas A&M) before arriving in San Jose last year. All the Texas native did in his first season as the Spartans' signal caller was operate an offense that scored nearly 30 points a game and av eraged 298.4 passing yards, good for 19th nationally. On the first day collegiate athletes were allowed to earn money off their name, image and likeness, San Jose State quarterback Nick Starkel had a piece of advice for his teammates: don't lend it out to just anyone - and maybe not at all. "If you're missi ng practice for a photoshoot because you got a deal with a brand you're working on, I will rip you a new one," Starkel said in a social media video Thursday. "In the end, it is America. It is a free country. Do what you desire. But a PSA to my teammates … I do not expect you to let it distract you. If it does, we're gonna have a serious problem."Starkel, a senior who passed for 2,174 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, posted a series of videos to Instagram in response to the new law of the la nd beginning Thursday. Facing laws in six states set to take effect this month, the NCAA agreed to change its so-called NIL rules, paving the way for a new potential source of income for amateur athletes, who had previously been barred by the NCAA of rec eiving any compensation. Starkel, however, said the NIL deals are unlikely to benefit everyone. "Everybody's acting like everyone out here is gonna get a shoe brand deal or something," Starkel said. While Clemson and Oklahoma have made conference titles an annual event, San Jose State and Ball State got to celebrate for the first time in decades this weekend. San Jose State's 34-20 victory over Boise State in the Mountain West Conference championshi p game gave the unbeaten Spartans their first league title since finishing the 1991 season as the Big West co-champions. They won the Big West outright in 1990. Ball State beat Buffalo 38-28 on Friday night for its first Mid-American Conference champions hip since 1996. Nick Starkel completed 32 of 52 passes for 453 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 25 San Jose State to its first Mountain West Conference championship, 34-20 over Boise State on Saturday. The Spartans (7-0) had lost all 14 previous meetings with the Broncos (5-2). Starkel broke former Fresno State star Derek Carr's title-game record of 404 yards passing set in 2013 in a victory over Utah State.It was the fourth 400-yard passing game of Starkel's career, and second this season, his first with the Spartans. As good as Nevada's Carson Strong has been, he doesn't have the best quarterback rating in the league. That belongs to Starkel, the transfer from Arkansas (who was at Texas A&M before that). The MW has become a transfer league at quarterback with seven t ransfers starting at least one game at quarterback for MW schools this season. Starkel has been the best of that bunch, and he qualifies as a newcomer for this award. After throwing five interceptions in a loss to SJSU last season when he was at Arkansas , Starkel has become a Spartans star. He's completed 70.1 percent of his passes for 980 yards, nine touchdowns, two interceptions and a MW-best 171 quarterback rating to lead SJSU to its best start since 1955. Nick Starkel threw two touchdown passes to Bailey Gaither and San Jose State beat UNLV 34-17 on Saturday night. SJSU (4-0, 4-0 Mountain West Conference) is off to its best start since opening the 1955 season with four consecutive wins. Starkel was 17-of- 28 passing for 274 yards and Gaither finished with six receptions for 94 yards. Nick Nash had 94 yards rushing on eight carries for the Spartans. Nash is listed as the backup quarterback and led San Jose State to a win over San Diego State last week afte r Starkel left the game due to an undisclosed injury suffered on the first drive.Gaither took a pop pass and raced past three defenders for a 41-yard touchdown to make it 7-3 with 6:11 left in the first quarter and the Spartans led the rest of the way. Gaither's diving 2-yard touchdown with 1:28 left in the first half gave San Jose State a 24-10 lead. Starkel was nothing short of sensational in just his second game with San Jose State, completing 34 of 47 passes for 467 yards and career-high five touchdowns. His aerial assault on New Mexico's secondary came early and often. He connected with Walker f or two explosive touchdowns of 37 and 26 yards, the latter of which is a candidate for catch of the year. He also found Isaiah Hamilton on a gorgeous 43-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Starkel's best throw of the night, however, was to Bailey Gaith er. In the final seconds of the third quarter, Starkel threw an absolutely perfect spiral to Gaither in stride for a 69-yard touchdown, one that even had the coach in awe.Starkel connected with 10 receivers, but Gaither and Walker were his two fav orite targets. Gaither had 10 receptions for 208 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Walker had nine receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns. The seldom-used Sam Olson had a one-yard touchdown as well. Starkel's quarterback rating of 190.9 was the s econd-best of his career. Coincidentally, Starkel's highest single-game quarterback rating also came against New Mexico, back in 2017 when he still played at Texas A&M, the team he played for before moving on to Arkansas. - San Jose Mercury News

Nick Starkel threw for 467 yards and a career-high five touchdowns to help San Jose State beat New Mexico 38-21 on Saturday night and open the season with back-to-back wins for the first time 33 years. The Spartans (2-0, 2-0 Mountain West Conference) won their first two games of the season for the first time since 1987 and opened their conference schedule with consecutive wins for the first time since 2011, when they were a member of the Western Athletic Conference. Bailey Gaither set career highs with 10 receptions and 208 yards receiving, including a 69-yard touchdown. Tre Walker had 107 yards receiving and two TDs on nine catches for SJSU. Arkansas quarterback Nick Starkel, in his first start in a Razorbacks uniform, led his team on two fourth-quarter touchdown drives, breaking a 34-all tie and sending Arkansas to a 55-34 win over Colorado State on Saturday. The Razorbacks (2-1) earned the ir first victory over an FBS opponent this season and only the second in coach Chad Morris' 15 games dating back to last year. Starkel, who transferred from Texas A&M in the offseason, was named quarterback Monday after entering and playing well in the s econd half of Arkansas' loss to Ole Miss last Saturday. He rewarded Morris' faith, going 20 for 35 for 305 yards with three touchdowns against the Rams.Starkel completed three straight passes for 12, 17 and 20 yards on the go-ahead drive before De vwah Whaley's 5-yard touchdown run capped it for a 41-34 lead. He then threw a 62-yard touchdown to Cheyenne O'Grady on the ensuing series. Colorado State (1-2) rallied from a 14-point, first half deficit and tied it at 34 when back-up quarterback Patric k O'Brien scrambled and found Dante Wright for a 75-yard touchdown pass near the end of the third quarter. Nick Starkel spent his first week running practice reps with the Arkansas starters the same way he spent the previous weeks running practice reps with the second unit. For a player in his first year at a new school making his first start at quarterback, Starkel was cool about the change. He has to stay that way Saturday, too, if his Razorbacks have any hope of salvaging the season.Arkansas (1-1) hosts Colorado State (1-1) in a game that features two teams predicted to finish near the bottom of th eir respective conferences. A loss for the Razorbacks, however, would make a far bigger ripple - especially after the Rams beat Arkansas a year ago in a stunner that helped ensure the first season for coach Chad Morris at Arkansas would be nothing worth remembering. Arkansas Razorback fans, meet quarterback Nick Starkel. He's an outspoken, maybe even brash, social-media maven and unabashed Justin Bieber believer with a big arm and big ideas about where the University of Arkansas program is headed. The 6-4 graduate t ransfer arrived on campus in late May with two years to play, and he's got his sights on the starting quarterback job along with fellow transfer Ben Hicks. "Fall camp, I just see myself going out there Day 1 trying to set the tone," Starkel said. "This i s what we're here to do. We're here to win games, and if you're not trying to do that, then get out of here."Starkel strikes up intriguing possibilities for the Razorbacks. Coach Chad Morris said he's been impressed with Starkel's leadership and c onfidence level, and he's eagerly taken in the reports from teammates in offseason skills and drills work.
