Senior wide receiver JD Spielman, a transfer from Nebraska, says he is starting to notice the difference in offenses between the Big 12 and Big 10 teams. He said the Big 12 has more speed and the Big 10 has bigger players. Spielman says he is adjusting t o the new offense and loves learning it. He has been a TCU fan recently and remembers watching them in 2014 when TCU was a top 5 school. He said it is different not getting as many targets as he did at Nebraska, recognizing it's a team sport. Spielman sa id he is just glad he gets another year of football. Gary Patterson also pointed out something that is different in the Big 12 than most leagues and that is the fact that the Big 12 plays a round-robin style. Patterson said since you play everyone each y ear it is hard to change it up and prepare a couple "new wrinkles" so the team won't know your game plan. As expected, wide receiver JD Spielman was granted his immediate eligibility request by the NCAA, sources told the Star-Telegram. Most believed the former Nebraska receiver would be granted the waiver since he joined the program this summer and it became official on Tuesday. TCU remains optimistic that LSU transfer Marcel Brooks will obtain a waiver as well. That decision is expected soon, possibly at some point next week. Coach Gary Patterson raved about Brooks' versatility as a defender last week, say ing the former five-star prospect can play pass rusher, linebacker and even safety.Spielman, meanwhile, brings a veteran presence to the wide receiver corps and is also an option to return punts. Spielman has earned preseason recognition, includin g being named to the Senior Bowl's Top 250. Patterson said Spielman had been "in and out" of practice in recent weeks, but "when he's out there, he's starting to learn. We just need him to get more reps." Spielman had three consecutive 800-yard receiving seasons for the Cornhuskers, leading the team with 49 catches for 898 yards and five touchdowns last season. JD Spielman, the former Nebraska standout receiver, will catch at least 40 passes for TCU this season. That, of course, is assuming there is a season. If college football does indeed go forward, the 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior will be in a situation where he can put up excellent numbers. In order to put up excellent numbers, Spielman obviously will need to be healthy. In this case, we're mostly talking about mental health. In early March, Nebraska officials announced he wouldn't be part of the team in th e spring because of a "personal health matter." Spielman left campus in February, never returned to school and recently said on Twitter that he "played all 12 games last year while struggling with depression and anxiety."He said he played 30 pound s below his desired playing weight due to lack of sleep and not eating well. I was always struck by how small he looked in uniform. Even so, he started all 12 games and led Nebraska in receptions (49), receiving yards (898) and receiving touchdowns (five ) while becoming the first Husker with three 800-yard receiving seasons. The most ardent Husker fans can almost recite his accolades in their sleep. Former Nebraska wide receiver JD Spielman on Monday confirmed via social media what had been reported over the weekend: He's transferring to TCU. The senior reportedly received the necessary wavier, or waivers, from the NCAA to be able to play this fall. He will spend his final collegiate season with the Horned Frogs after three straight 800-plus yard receiving seasons at NU. He first entered the transfer portal in June after taking a leave of absence for a personal health matter just before NU was abou t to start spring ball in March. Spielman told a Twitter user that he battled "depression and anxiety," while appearing in all 12 games for the Huskers last season. Spielman added he played 30 pounds underweight due to "not eating or sleeping." Eden Prairie native JD Spielman has picked his transfer destination: TCU. The former Nebraska receiver entered the NCAA transfer portal a little more than a month ago, after he took a leave of absence from the Cornhuskers back in March. He finished last season as a redshirt junior, amassing All-Big Ten honors for the third time. Per a report from 247Sports.com, Spielman can play immediately for TCU after receiving a waiver from the NCAA, as he has not yet graduated and isn't considered a graduate transf er. Many thought the Gophers, Spielman's hometown team that recruited him heavily and where many of his former Eden Prairie teammates went, could have been a landing spot. But having Nebraska corroborate Spielman's waiver request to play for a divisional rival seemed unlikely. - Star Tribune

Scott Frost weighed in on JD Spielman's transfer and his new-look wide receiver room Wednesday night on the "Husker Sports Nightly" radio program. Frost, the third-year Nebraska football coach, said he had been in contact with Spielman in the lead-up to the talented senior wide receiver's decision to transfer on Monday. "He's made a lot of plays at Nebraska and I wish him the best and I think everybody here hopes the best for him," Frost said. "...In talking to him, I think both parties were pretty sur e that a fresh start and moving on was probably the right decision at this point."In the wake of Spielman's departure, five of Nebraska's nine scholarship wide receivers will be newcomers in the 2020 recruiting class. "That's a position that we've been trying to rebuild and get right really since the first day that we stepped on to campus here and it's a position where we're going to need to be better," Frost said. "We certainly have some veterans we think can help us, but we're going to be relia nt on a bunch of new players." Spielman is not a graduate transfer and already used a redshirt season in 2016, meaning he will need to obtain a waiver in order to play in 2020. There is at least some risk in trying to transfer because he is down to one year of eligibility remaining, m eaning Spielman will either be granted a waiver to play or he will not play again in college football. The move is not fully unexpected, considering Spielman has been away from the team for more than three months. Coach Scott Frost after the 2019 regular season's conclusion said that he was looking forward to having Spielman back in the program in 2020, but then he left a couple of months later and now, formally, will look to play elsewhere.Spielman's departure means Nebraska will have nine schol arship wide receivers on the roster in 2020 - assuming they don't add one more via transfer - and five of them will be newcomers. The Huskers are also down to 13 scholarship seniors remaining on the roster and they have 79 of 85 spots filled overall, acc ording to the Journal Star's count. Spielman is the third player to transfer in recent weeks, joining freshman defensive back Henry Gray, who entered the portal last week and has since committed to Florida International, and quarterback Noah Vedral, who left NU in late April and subsequently signed with Rutgers. - Lincoln Journal Star

JD Spielman, one of the top receivers in Nebraska history, has entered his name in the transfer portal, the school said Monday. Spielman is the first player to put together three straight 800-yard receiving seasons for the Cornhuskers and leaves No. 3 in career receptions and yards. The Red-White Spring Game isn't happening on Saturday, but maybe you can still find at least a little bit of a football fix. Nebraska on Monday morning announced that it will be streaming a video game simulation of the Spring Game on its social media cha nnels, featuring rosters made up of program legends, according to a school news release. The simulation will also have radio broadcast worked into it and is set to be live-streamed at 1 p.m. Saturday on Facebook, Twitter and Twitch. "Especially with the lack of spring practice and no spring game, we really want our fans to still feel connected," senior associate athletic director Garrett Klassy told the Journal Star late last week. NU had sold more than 62,000 tickets for its Red-White Spring Game befor e the coronavirus pandemic forced its cancellation.
