2021 ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): TE Jamal Pettigrew, MCN,...Pettigrew established himself as one of the top blocking tight ends in the conference and all of FCS. The graduate from New Orleans graded out at 83 percent in the run game and had a total of 26 knockdown blocks. He also caught seven passes for 92 yards with a touchdown. - McNeese Football

McNeese's season opening game at Tarleton State this Saturday will air live on FOX Sports Southwest Plus and FOX Sports Go, it was announced on Tuesday. The game was originally scheduled to be carried by ESPN Plus. Under the direction of first-year head coach Frank Wilson, McNeese will be playing a competitive game for the first time since Nov. 23, 2019, a span of 447 games, when it takes the field at Memorial Stadium in Stephenville against the Texans who will be making their NCAA Division I FCS debut. McNeese posted a 7-5 record in the fall of 2019, and due to COVID and two major hurricanes, the Cowboys were without any kind of workout and conditioning practices for the fall and did not return to Lake Charles as a team until November. TSU, a new memb er of the WAC, posted an 11-1 record in 2019, its final season in the NCAA Division II ranks. - McNeese Football

Former LSU tight end Jamal Pettigrew has signed with McNeese State, the school announced Saturday afternoon. LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Pettigrew, who entered the NCAA transfer portal last week, was seeking more playing time for his final collegiate seaso n. Pettigrew graduated from LSU this summer and is eligible to play immediately. The 6-foot-7, 254-pound St. Augustine High graduate has recorded two catches for 17 yards in his LSU career. Pettigrew joins a McNeese State program with several LSU ties. M cNeese coach Frank Wilson is entering his first season, and he was LSU's associate head coach, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator from 2010 to 2015. Orgeron's son, Cody, is also the team's projected starting quarterback. Orgeron said in a Tue sday morning interview with WNXX-FM, 104.5's "Off the Bench" that the door was open for Pettigrew to return. "I told him, 'Go test the waters. If there's something that fits you, go," Orgeron said. "If not, come back." "It's his senior year," he added. " He wants to play." - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU tight end Jamal Pettigrew has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to AL.com. The 6-foot-7, 254-pound senior entered the Tigers football program as a four-star prospect out of St. Augustine High in New Orleans, and, after four years in Baton R ouge, which included sitting out 2018 with an ACL tear, Pettigrew is moving on. Pettigrew recorded two catches for 17 yards in his LSU career. LSU coach Ed Orgeron told the Baton Rouge Rotary Club Wednesday that the Tigers are "better at tight end than w e've been in a long time." Five-star true freshman Arik Gilbert is expected to see plenty of playing time this season. The 6-foot-5, 249-pound Georgia, native was the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2019, when he led Marietta High to the 7A state championship. - Baton Rouge Advocate
