  08/31/21 - QB Sam NoyerrSr/2022, Oregon State, 6-3, 227 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Oregon State will go with sixth-year senior Sam Noyer as its starting quarterback for Saturday's 2021 season opener at Purdue. Noyer, who transferred from Colorado in June, beat out fourth-year sophomore Chance Nolan for the starting berth. Tristan Gebbia, among those battling for the starting berth during the first two weeks of camp, is sidelined with a sore hamstring. Coach Jonathan Smith said the quarterbacks were told of the decision Sunday. "Throughout camp, I thought the whole quarterback room did a good job going back and forth. It was very close," Smith said. "Ultimately getting ready for a game week, felt like the best way to do it was make a decision on Monday so we can have a week of work with the game plan." The 6-foot-4, 227-pound Noyer played five years and 26 games at Colorado. Noyer earned second-team all-conference honors in 2020 after leading the Buffaloes to a 4-2 record. Noyer is a graduate of Beaverton High. "The overall feel throughout the body of work through camp and then headed into a game plan, we just felt like he has the best chance to let us score some points," Smith said of Noyer. - The Oregonian

Four years into coach Jonathan Smith's Oregon State tenure, the Beavers have beefed up their football roster with 19 transfers from FBS or FCS schools. They're not just practice fodder, either. Fourteen come from Power 5 schools, including notable programs like Georgia, Penn State, Florida State and Oklahoma. Nine were former 4-star high school recruits. The 19 transfers combined to play 230 games and start 76 times at their previous school. Three earned an all-conference honor at least one time at their previous stop. The result is that as many as 12 transfers could start Oregon State's Sept. 4 season opener at Purdue.

Smith was a little surprised to hear that number, but on the other hand, not really. The transfer portal is a tool OSU has frequently used since it became a thing in 2018. "I will say, we were pretty aggressive once it got up and going," Smith said. "You think about a guy from high school who goes to a school, and that's not the right fit. The next time, the next place, it's going to be about a football decision. If you think about football, and coaching, style and play, we've got a lot to sell to guys." - The Oregonian

  06/16/21 - QB Sam NoyerrSr/2022, Oregon State, 6-3, 227 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Sam Noyer announced last week that he is taking his talents to Corvallis for the final season of his college career. In doing so, he added a new layer of drama to a quarterback battle that already had plenty to spare. Oregon State was rolling into the fall with at least three signal callers duking it out for the starting spot. Throw an all-conference grad transfer in the mix, and the Beavers suddenly have one of the more intriguing quarterback rooms in the Pac-12. Noyer, a former Beaverton High star who earned second team all-Pac-12 honors last season at Colorado while leading the Buffaloes to a bowl game, has the best resume out of them all.

After working through multiple quarterback battles early in his career - and converting to safety at one point before eventually swapping back to quarterback - he finished the 2020 season with 1,101 passing yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions. With Gulbranson out, and Gebbia still recovering, Nolan, who started three games last season, would be the only healthy quarterback on the roster who has played in a college game prior to Noyer's arrival. Sam Vidlak, a true freshman who enrolled early in the spring, also took first-team reps in the spring. A source close to the situation told Mid-Valley Media that Gebbia has not been cleared to play yet, and that Noyer was brought in to add depth to the quarterback room and also push Gebbia for the starting spot should he recover in time for fall camp. - Gazette Times

  06/12/21 - QB Sam NoyerrSr/2022, Oregon State, 6-3, 227 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Oregon State's quarterback battle became much more interesting Friday. Sam Noyer, who went to Beaverton High and starred at Colorado last season, announced on Twitter Friday that he is transferring to Oregon State. "I'm home," Noyer said in a Tweet that featured a graphic of him in a No. 4 Beavers' jersey. Noyer, a 6-foot-4, 220 pound senior, will arrive in Corvallis as a grad transfer with one year of eligibility remaining. During his junior season with the Buffs, he garnered second-team All-Pac-12 honors and led them to a 4-2 season that included a trip to the Alamo Bowl. Noyer arrived in Boulder as a promising quarterback prospect before converting to safety his sophomore season in order to see more playing time. Prior to his COVID senior season, he switched back to quarterback and was one of the top signal callers in the conference. In six games, Noyer threw for 1,101 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions. - Gazette Times

  06/11/21 - QB Sam NoyerrSr/2022, Oregon State, 6-3, 227 (DS#999 QB) + More +

On Friday, CU's former starting quarterback announced that he is transferring to Oregon State. The Buffs are scheduled to host Oregon State on Nov. 6 at Folsom Field, fittingly for CU's homecoming game. On Monday, CU and Noyer announced his decision to put his name into the NCAA transfer portal, and it didn't take long to find a new - and very familiar - home. The move to Oregon State is a natural one for Noyer, who was born in Portland and graduated from Beaverton (Ore.) High School.

During an interview on Portland's 750 AM radio on Friday, Noyer said, "It's kind of a match made in heaven, really. "I've grown up here so I've known that Beaver Nation is awesome. I'm excited to be able to play in front of Beaver Nation next year." Noyer will be reunited with the man who recruited him to CU, Brian Lindgren. OSU's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the past three years, Lindgren held a similar position at CU from 2013-17. During his time at CU, Noyer had four quarterback coaches in five years, with Lindgren being the only coach he had for more than one season. - Daily Camera

  06/07/21 - QB Sam NoyerrSr/2022, Oregon State, 6-3, 227 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Colorado starting quarterback Sam Noyer has entered the transfer portal for a second time to close a career in Boulder that included three head coaches and a brief switch to safety. Noyer led the Buffaloes to a 4-2 record last season under first-year Buffaloes coach Karl Dorrell and a berth in the Alamo Bowl. Originally part of the 2016 recruiting class under then-coach Mike MacIntyre, Noyer redshirted and then was a backup QB for two seasons before switching to the defensive side in 2019 under coach Mel Tucker, who is now at Michigan State. All set to transfer after the '19 season, Noyer was convinced to come back after Dorrell was brought on board. Noyer won the starting job out of camp and helped the Buffaloes to a 4-0 start, along with a spot in the polls. The Buffaloes lost to Utah in the regular-season finale and then Texas in the Alamo Bowl. - AP College Football

Colorado will have a new starting quarterback in the fall. On Monday, CU announced that senior Sam Noyer, who started all six games last season for the Buffaloes, has decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Named second-team All-Pac-12 by coaches last season, Noyer has one season of eligibility remaining and hopes to play elsewhere this fall. After winning the starting job in preseason camp, Noyer completed 88-of-160 passes for 1,101 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions, while also rushing for 208 yards and five touchdowns. The first CU quarterback since Mike Moschetti (1998) to win his first four career starts, Noyer was named Pac-12 offensive player of the week after a 35-32 win at Stanford in the second game. - Daily Camera

About a year ago, Sam Noyer never expected to play another game at Colorado. He certainly didn't expect to be in Boulder this spring preparing for yet another season with the Buffaloes. "But, I've enjoyed every single moment of it," he said last week as the Buffs closed out spring practices. Entering his sixth season with the Buffs, Noyer has had a career filled with challenges and he's bracing for another one. After winning the starting quarterback job last fall, Noyer missed this spring while recovering from shoulder surgery and will go into the fall fighting for the job again. "I'm just itching to get back out there," he said. The only player remaining from CU's surprising Pac-12 South title team in 2016, Noyer led the Buffs to another minor resurgence last year. In the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, Noyer helped CU go 4-2 and reach the Alamo Bowl for the second time in his career. The Alamo Bowl would have been his final game at CU, but the NCAA granted all players an extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic. - Daily Camera

Senior quarterback Sam Noyer, who started all six games last season, isn't participating in spring practices because he's recovering from shoulder surgery. His presence is certainly felt, however. "You can tell Sam's around because you hear him," Dorrell said. "He's showing his leadership qualities. He's running, he's doing everything from a conditioning standpoint...He's doing all of that stuff but obviously he's not ready to throw a football yet." With Noyer out, returning freshman Brendon Lewis, true freshman Drew Carter and junior J.T. Shrout, a transfer from Tennessee, are competing. "(Noyer) has being very encouraging for the quarterbacks and all the offensive players," Dorrell said. "Sam is such, I think, a really positive influence on a lot of our players. He loves this team, being around the team and encouraging them to keep getting better and keep performing." - Daily Camera

At this time a year ago, Sam Noyer was looking for a new school, JT Shrout was trying to win the starting job at Tennessee and Drew Carter was on the basketball court tearing up competition in Oregon. Now, they are all vying for playing time at quarterback with the Colorado Buffaloes. "Our quarterback room looks completely different than what it was last year at this time," CU head coach Karl Dorrell said Friday. Just 10 months after being hired as CU's head coach, Dorrell has almost completely overhauled the QB room.

Junior Tyler Lytle and true freshman Brendon Lewis were the only scholarship quarterbacks when Dorrell was hired, although he quickly lured Noyer out of the transfer portal. Noyer wound up starting all six games for the Buffs (4-2) last season, with Lytle and Lewis as the backups. Lewis made his debut in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29 and looked good, leading the Buffs to three touchdowns. Since the end of the season, Lytle has transferred to Massachusetts and Noyer has had shoulder surgery that will likely sideline him for spring practices. - Daily Camera

Sam Noyer is coming back to the Buffaloes. Colorado's starting quarterback last season will return in 2021, coach Karl Dorrell told reporters Friday during a year-in-review news conference, with Noyer opting in to an NCAA-gifted year of eligibility for senior athletes amid the coronavirus pandemic. Noyer threw for 1,101 yards with 11 total touchdowns over six starts last season, but his place on the depth chart moving forward is far from secured. Noyer is expected to miss the entire spring while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, and freshman Brendon Lewis played well in relief of Noyer during the Buffs' Alamo Bowl loss to Texas. - Denver Post

Sam Noyer ran for a score and threw for another to help Colorado hold off San Diego State 20-10 on Saturday night as the Buffaloes remain undefeated under new coach Karl Dorrell. Jarek Broussard rushed for 124 yards to top the 100-yard mark for a third straight game, while a Colorado defense led by linebacker Nate Landman kept relentless pressure on a banged-up Aztecs offense. A stingy San Diego State defense kept things close, though, even providing a big first-half spark when Darren Hall picked off a Noyer pass and returned it for a 57-yard score. That was after Colorado grabbed a 14-0 lead behind a 1-yard TD run by Noyer and a 3-yard flip pass to Jaylon Jackson.

The Buffaloes and Aztecs didn't find out they were meeting on the field until Thanksgiving Day. Colorado (3-0, 2-0 Pac-12) was originally scheduled to travel to No. 19 USC for a Pac-12 South showdown, but it was canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the Trojans' program. San Diego State (3-3, 3-2 Mountain West) was available for a trip to Boulder when its contest at Fresno State was called off due to contact tracing concerns with the Bulldogs. - Colorado/AP College Football

Part of Noyer's success so far has come from his aggressive running style, including a few times when he's tried to leap over defenders. He said having last week off - after Arizona State had to cancel the game because of COVID-19 issues - helped his body rest. "Really all of us, I think it helps just to get our bodies back right, but overall I think my body's doing really well," he said. While Noyer has said he needs to be smarter in avoiding contact - and head coach Karl Dorrell agrees - he added that human nature will be tough to contain. "When the adrenaline's flowing, I just kind of react," he said. "I probably shouldn't be as airborne as I have been, but if I need that first down, I'm gonna go get it and I think that's something you're going to continue to see."

In addition to resting, Noyer said last week was beneficial as the Buffs go into a big matchup with the Trojans. USC and Colorado are the only undefeated teams in the Pac-12 South division. "I think it gave us extra time to prepare for a great SC team and I think guys took each day as a new opportunity to prepare and get better," Noyer said. "I don't think that guys really took a step back. I think a lot of people can take a step back in those type of situations but I think our team has handled it really well and I think Coach Dorrell has done a great job of handling the entire situation well. I think overall we did a good job of preparing and now we're back on to a real game and we're ready to go." Noyer credits his relationship with offensive coordinator Darrin Chiaverini and quarterbacks Danny Langsdorf for getting him ready each week. - Denver Post

Sam Noyer passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more, Jarek Broussard had another strong day rushing, and Colorado held on to beat Stanford 35-32 on Saturday. Dimitri Stanley caught six passes for 126 yards and a score as Colorado remained unbeaten under first-year coach Karl Dorrell. Noyer, a fifth-year senior who nearly transferred out of Colorado after playing safety last season, threw an interception on his fourth pass of the afternoon then settled in to complete 15 of 24 attempts for 255 yards. Noyer scored on a 7-yard option keeper midway through the second quarter then led the Buffaloes on three scoring drives coming out of halftime.

Brenden Rice had a 34-yard touchdown catch and Jaren Mangham added a one-yard touchdown run for Colorado (2-0, 2-0 Pac-12). Davis Mills passed for 327 yards and a touchdown in his first game of the season for Stanford (0-2, 0-2). Mills was one of four players forced to sit out last week's game against Oregon because of coronavirus concerns. The Pac-12 later admitted errors in the testing protocol that kept the four Stanford players out. Jet Toner added three field goals for the Cardinal. Stanford lost its home opener for the first time since 2007. - AP College Football

Sam Noyer is a fifth-year senior for the Colorado Buffaloes. After playing safety last year, he's returning to quarterback. When Sam Noyer put his name in the NCAA transfer portal last winter, he figured his time with the Colorado Buffaloes was done. After a coaching change and a few months of pondering his future, Noyer is back - although it's unclear when he'll actually be able to compete again because of the coronavirus pandemic pausing football until at least January.

During a virtual press conference Thursday, the fifth-year senior quarterback spoke to reporters for the first time since deciding to rejoin the Buffs in the spring to battle for the starting job. "I just felt like it was the right opportunity and the right time to compete with Tyler (Lytle) and Brendon (Lewis)," Noyer said. That was not on his mind last winter, though. "I had some other schools lined up and, to be honest, I really did not think I would come back to Colorado," Noyer said. - Daily Camera

A familiar face is returning to the Colorado quarterback room. Former backup Sam Noyer, who moved to safety last season and entered the transfer portal this winter, will remain with the Buffaloes and return to his original position, Buffzone has learned through multiple sources. A senior, Noyer is expected to compete for the starting job with redshirt junior Tyler Lytle and true freshman Brendon Lewis. After losing three-year starter Steven Montez to graduation and redshirt sophomore Blake Stenstrom to the transfer portal, CU had been down to two scholarship quarterbacks.

Adding Noyer back to the quarterback room allows CU to gain a veteran who knows the roster and knows the offense. Although the Buffs have a new head coach in Karl Dorrell, offensive coordinator Darrin Chiaverini is heading into his fifth season with the program. Chiaverini is returning to the play-calling role he had in 2018, when Noyer was a sophomore. Noyer, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder from Beaverton, Ore., signed with CU in 2016 and spent his first three seasons with the Buffs as a backup quarterback. After redshirting in 2016, he appeared in nine games as a backup in 2017 and 2018, completing 21-of-41 passes for 179 yards and two interceptions. - Daily Camera
