Darren Evans, LSU, Player News

Without Stingley, the Tigers' starting cornerbacks - sophomore Cordale Flott, graduate transfer Darren Evans and freshman Eli Ricks - had one combined career start at LSU. Evans, the player with the most experience, transferred from Nicholls State earlie r this month. "When you're missing one of the best corners in the nation," Stevens said, "it's going to hurt." Mississippi State beat LSU with crossing routes and deep passes down the sidelines. Coach Mike Leach expected LSU to play loose coverage. When LSU instead crowded near the line of scrimmage, Leach said Mississippi State decided "we ought to go over the top." Costello picked apart the secondary. On a touchdown drive in the second quarter, he completed a 34-yard pass behind Flott. Three plays lat er, Costello threw a 31-yard touchdown over Evans' head. Sophomore Jay Ward later replaced Evans, even though Ward missed two weeks of practice before the game. Ward broke up three passes, but the substitution didn't change much. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Former Nicholls State defensive back Darren Evans announced Tuesday evening that he has transferred to LSU. Starting nickel safety Kary Vincent announced in August he was opting out of the upcoming season, and, last week, LSU coach Ed Orgeron said he was looking to use the team's final scholarship spot of the 2020 recruiting cycle to boost depth in the defensive backfield. "We're looking for players right now, obviously," Orgeron said. "We have some needs...We're looking for a cornerback, and I think we 're going to use it on a cornerback. It should be happening soon." Evans, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound Baton Rouge native, started in all 14 games at cornerback for Nicholls State in 2019, and he was named second team All-Southland Conference in 2018. Evans sta rted at corner in 32 total games at Nicholls, and he recorded 100 tackles, four interceptions and 27 pass breakups in his three-year career in Thibodaux. "They say Home is where the heart is," Evans posted Tuesday afternoon on Twitter. - Baton Rouge Advo cate
